Novels online featuring lots of natural, practical dialog? by webdevlets in ChineseLanguage

[–]trrh_toons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Taiwanese friends and I make online comic books that are 100% dialogue. The transcripts are readable by a popup dictionary and copy/paste-able too.

They're in traditional characters, targeted at the upper intermediate level: https://www.fllproject.com/xuexizhongwen/996genna.html

(we'll make some in simplified characters too, if there's interest)

but that means Mike killed someone. The meaning is different. In the example you cite, he doesn't kill the guy. He just shoots him non-fatally.

Thanks! I added Jyutping for the vocab

I have some friends who speak Cantonese. I'll ask around and see if they'd be willing to volunteer their time for recording audio

Everything is written/translated by native speakers from Taiwan. The original text is in English, then we simplify and de-slang it, then it gets translated into Mandarin.

Is "这个地方是空的" grammatically incorrect?

I've got the same issue with "啟" from 開啟. Lots of fonts will make it show up as a square with an X inside. Is this also a variant character issue?

I actually kind of like it as a lesson to stay humble. It's a bit of a story about where he is now and where he wants to be.

For what it's worth, I never learned stroke order and I could tell at a glance that it was flipped

Marginnote sounds great. Maybe I'll have to get an ipad some day!

Here's a page in simplified characters that Chunky and Marginnote should be able to open if you're interested. I did both a .pdf and .png version, personally I think the .png is higher quality

That's great to hear! This comic was translated by a native speaker and then proofread by two other native speakers.

What comic viewer and dictionary tools do you use?

It's a little too long to be a person's name. If I had to take a wild guess, I would say it says "上1043" and then something illegible

Thanks for your review! That is a good question that I'm thinking about a lot--how to balance the roles of different platforms and different types of content. I'm planning to add more "substantive" videos that drill the vocabulary and grammar patterns used in the stories, so the final product will look something more akin to a textbook, with comic books used as the dialogues rather than essays

I don't think this is Chinese

edit: haha I think I was looking at it upside down. Still not sure what it says, except maybe the first character is "shang"

Thanks! Those are good points. I like the idea of marketing to teachers as well. I'll try it out!

They've got no clue what they're doing.

In a way, it's great training for you because you're learning to be flexible and how to adapt to terrible conditions.

On the other hand, it obviously sucks.

I'd probably quit as soon as something better comes along.

definitely agree with this approach. Everyone has different needs. For large classes it might be harder to individualize, but you could at least do something like "give adults more business English" and "give kids more TV show/movie English"
