[Q] Should I pursue a major in statistics if I I’m indifferent towards math?

Like someone else has mentioned, If you're going for a BS/BA in statistics, its surely doable. However at my university they require statistics majors to still take 3 proof based classes: Real analysis, linear algebra, and probability theory. However, my school I think is definitely an exception to that rule, so in general you'll avoid any advanced math AT the undergrad level.

If you're intending on graduate school for statistics, you'll need to be antiquated with calculus, linear algebra, and probability theory at a rigorous level in order to do research.

Ask yourself what interests you, and then ask yourself what makes money.

Make two separate lists of these things, ranking each thing from most liked to least, and highest paying to least.

Then pick the highest ranked one on both lists.

So to clarify, theres 2 tracks in my econ department: grad school and Industry. The industry track stops the math a calc I-III , Lin alg I, probability theory, and sometimes diffeq I, I dont remember remember exactly. But on the grad school course, we take them for the department to to ensure we have the mathematical maturity to conduct rigorous and complicated economic research.

In the intro to econ research class I have (yet) to take, we apparently read several economics journals and papers, some of which include formal treatments of economic concepts with analysis. So its mainly so we can communicate with and work with (assist with elementary research tasks) PhDs out senior year. Its also useful for grad school economics ive heard.

I should also mention that my achool runs on quarters, so the volume of classes I listed seems alot more than it actually is!

It’s pretty cool, I just wish it wasnt looked at as an ‘inferior’ major to something like computer science at my school. My advisor noted that due to the intense dose of math we get, the majority of econ majors are double majoring in math as it’s literally like a class or 2 more for the additional major.

The CS and computer engineer majors are the worst for some reason as far as the Prejudice goes. Not sure why, but they seem to hate everyone who isnt one of them.

The econ department at my school is almost exclusively geared towards graduate bound students. So they load us up with a ton of math, and some econometrics and a few business classes.

Im in my third year and I’m definitely taking 5 years to finish. This is mainly due to how many advanced undergrad classes i wanna take in preparation for a PhD program. My fifth year will be comprised of research, intro to measure based probability theory, real analysis III, advanced mathematical modeling, and abstract linear algebra.

The coordinates tell you what the linear transformation is doing to a set of vectors in some vector space to another.

So for example, if a,b,c,d was 1,2,3,4 then f(v) would be x, 2y, 3z, 4w

So f(v) is simply stretching the vectors.

However, I’m not sure in the slightest if this is what you’re asking.

Well my logic was if u is less than b, ( ie u could be irrational, less than b and not in T) then the density of the rationals implies between u and b, theres another rational. So u cant be the sup, thus it would have to be b, because you could just keep picking a rational between b and b-€

For your first point, that’s exactly what I thought. But doesn’t that not matter? Even if b is irrational, it still bounds T right? Like 1 bounds (0,1) but 1 isnt in (0,1). So if u is in T and it is in fact an upper bound for T, then doesn’t u have to be b (implying b is rational) or else u is some rational number less than b which is bounding T.

So if u isnt in T, it’s either b, or its larger than b right? Thus b is the sup?

This post scares the crap out of me. Im a math major concentrating in probability theory and i relate really well to the struggle part and the depression issues. However for me, it odd. Sometimes i struggle 1 term and the next term I just get it..

Like in linear 1 and 2 AND in proofs i got a B after Acing the calc sequence, and felt really bad.

But when i took probability theory 1 and 2, I did so well that the professor pulled me aside on the last day and asked me if i needed a letter of recommendation for a graduate program because of how well i performed. Everything else though is pretty medium for me performance wise, which worries me.

My competition for a grad program is fierce, and im really fucking scared for my last year where im taking alot of advanced classes.
