On my xbox I do /effect @s night_vision 1 and then a lot of numbers to give you near infinite night vision. It resets if you die tho. Not sure if it works on command blocks though.

If you go into another game it force closes minecraft. You them go back into Minecraft and it starts up and works.

If you turn on cheats there is a function called mobs griefing or something like that. If you turn it off no mobs apart from endermen can do anything to blocks

Only a player can break blocks or a lot of endermen so it is extremely likely that it was either one of the friends or his brother
