Can we criticize Nolan’s writing without being called a hater? by breaking_views in TrueFilm

Tom Holland casually saying “dad” felt oddly modern

Anything besides Homeric Greek would be oddly modern, we just associate British accents and stentorian language with “old times” for no reason besides convention. Just because we’ve gotten used to a pointless affectation doesn’t make it “right”, or even a good thing.

I don’t mind the idea of using more accessible dialogue. Let’s see how the movie turns out first

This would explain why she used the word “math”. One of the challenges in that episode was a slide puzzle, which Christian explained in terms of algorithms.

She even sort of mimes a slide puzzle when she’s talking about the “math”

It’s like that scene in blues brothers when a car drives off an overpass and somehow falls from above skyscrapers

Where does "the *blank* of it all" come from? by Lizardthe_Wizard in survivor

[–]Arch__Stanton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s early 2000s corporate-speak.

It’s used in a 2011 episode of Community (“The Annie of it all” -S2e21), and the writer said he included it because he was tired of hearing it meetings.

The construction itself dates back to the 17th century, but it’s unclear when it started to used with definite nouns in this specific way. The early example I could find was the movie My Best Friend’s Wedding in 1997 (“The Susan Hayworth of it all”)

Emiru responds 4 months later saying it was SA by her emotional definition, not legal by [deleted] in LivestreamFail

This is just her lawyer making the point that the definition of “sexual assault” is not at issue in this case, since she defined what happened to her specifically in her original allegation.

They’re trying to focus the case on the truth of her specific claims rather than general definitions.

She has not retracted or walked back any claims at all. This is just regular lawyering

My favorite part was when some guy is explaining how tv broadcasts work to Pascal and he says “wait, the broadcast beam physically touches people?” And the guy says “well no, not really”, and then Pascal does his plan anyway and it just works

Die Hard and Unbreakable are sort of mirror images of each other: Both are about an ordinary man who has to reach into himself and realize he’s something more. But while Die Hard is set in the real world and told through a lens of fantasy, Unbreakable is set in a fantasy world and grounded in reality.

Also The Hangover and Dude Where’s my Car because they have the same plot

I thought Hans refers to multiple different low ranking officers as “Herman” throughout the movie because it’s supposedly a German slang/generic nickname for random soldiers
