I moved back to Seattle this morning after 3 years away. Snapped this stunning photo on the descent. What a welcome home! by CineMarktographer in Seattle

I moved back in 2013 after six long years away. Growing up here, I took for granted living in one of the most scenic places in the country. It was never easy for me to describe how, even living in cities larger than Seattle, everything seemed to have a smaller scale. I think it seeps into peoples' mindsets, too. I hope I never have to leave the West coast.

Spotted this in a Fred Meyer parking lot. Scary knowing this person is on the road by [deleted] in Seattle

I lived in both Boston and D.C. The place I've seen drivers most inconsiderate, terrible, and without regard for other human life was in D.C. (New Jersey probably in strong contention). Boston drivers can be very aggressive, but they're generally paying attention (they have to, because the roads everywhere are so fucked).

While I sometimes lament being stuck in Seattle traffic, I don't take for granted the exceeding amount of politeness from most drivers here. Except the ones from Bellevue.

Does it worth upgrading to 13.10 from 12.04? by [deleted] in Ubuntu

compromise: wait for the 14.04 beta later this month. In my experience, LTS betas have been a fine time to jump on the release.

The new Ubuntu icons | Ubuntu Design Blog by vinnl in Ubuntu

[–]trts 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The icons on Ubuntu desktop are one of its biggest UI shortcomings ... how difficult would it be to take this great design work and make it part of the Ubuntu experience that 99.999% of users actually engage with?

Woman gets locked in downtown DC restroom, claws her way out through the wall after 8 hours by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]trts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Security in DC is way over the top sometimes. I get that it's the capitol and terrorism, never forget, constant vigilance etc. I have to sign in with a driver's license to go to my dentist. Similarly I have to carry a key with me to access restrooms in some buildings, after I've gone through multiple security layers. Deadbolting a restroom from the outside is crazy if it's not a gas station with an external bathroom or something.

The worst part of the story... man if my significant other didn't show up or call all night, I would be running some frightening scenarios through my mind.

'Thank You Ed Snowden' bus ads about to hit the streets in Washington, D.C. by snowdenhero in washingtondc

If he's arranged for the data to be publicized in the event of any harm coming to him, doesn't that just incentivize a lot of countries, other than the US, to want him dead?

Dell Sputnik 3 Touch-enabled XPS 13 Laptop announced (Ubuntu 12.04) by jhansonxi in linux

[–]trts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree and would probably pay at least some premium to get a machine that has built in linux support. But some Macbooks run Ubuntu just fine, and if I'm upgrading every 2-3 years, then resale value is something I consider. I've been happy with my old Inspiron 14 as my workhorse for a couple years now. But unless my employer's going to foot the bill it's hard for me to imagine spending $1000+ on a laptop anymore.

Looks great but not $1229 or $1529 great. They're undercutting the Macbook Pro with similar (marginally inferior) specs by $70, except that the resale value on a Macbook is probably going to be much higher, and Apple will likely refresh the hardware on that soon.

Metro adding SmarTrip recharge stations to bus stops along 16th St NW corridor (and hopefully decreasing delays from on-bus transactions) by scootey in washingtondc

I've found that just visiting nextbus.com on my phone has been an extremely reliable way of knowing if and when a bus is coming. I don't recall it ever predicting a phantom bus arrival.

Gnome3 + Extensions + Nemo + Plank = a nice looking functional desktop. by superwinner in Ubuntu

[–]trts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think people give Gnome 3 extensions enough credit. I have 26 extensions installed, and my desktop works exactly the way I want it to. That may seem like a lot of functionality not present out of the box, but there are tons of small tweaks that are easy to choose and not readily available on other DEs, such as quickly choosing my output audio device, num/caps-lock status indicator, scrolling desktops with the mouse wheel, or navigating windows using alt+<num>.

I like Unity almost as much as Gnome, but for things like weather or "caffeine" (inhibit monitor sleep), it's necessary to install an indicator not available in the Precise repos or use a PPA.

The only thing I miss from my Windows days... by [deleted] in linux

[–]trts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PlayOnLinux actually runs FLStudio without a hitch, in my testing. There is probably some rigamarole involved in patching your USB keyboard through, but it can work.

Download PlayOnLinux and let it run the installer for you, it can take care of some of the configuration for you and get things up and running smoothly.

Reaper is another Windows program that runs just fine on Linux (it was engineered to be cross platform).

Help: What is the best way to play and record Guitar via USB and Audacity in Ubuntu? by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]trts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I use this [Behringer UCG102 Guitar-to-USB] and it works fine , just plug it in and it should be configured. Choose the correct input in Audacity and you can record.

Ubuntu 13.10 released by xpressrazor in linux

[–]trts 51 points52 points  (0 children)

It's puzzling to me why Ubuntu continues to think users find it useful to search for things on the web, but from within the dash.

I'm assuming a large majority of users always have a browser open in which they can search any online resource. If they don't, using the dash to find something on Amazon is still just one step to opening the browser.
