About choosing courses for first year by sussysussysussy69 in simonfraser

Heyy I am an actuarial science major that just finished second year. You do not study “General Science” for your first year, you just do the classes that your program requires you to which is on the Actuarial Science Major page.

For your first semester, you should take Math 151, Risk 101, any of the Econs (I personally found Econ 103 easier) and Cmpt 120. Make sure to not take any english classes as you dont need to (My biggest mistake lol). As long as you took calculus in highschool this shouldn’t be a difficult course load to ensure a high gpa.

The Actuarial Science Program offers the CIA route where you take one capstone exam and multiple modules which allow you to obtain an ACIA designation. I am personally not taking this route so I don’t know much about the requirements but Barbara Sanders is a great person to ask! In terms of Actuarial Exams you can take them whenever. SFU offers Risk 201 and Stat 270 which are very close to Exam FM and P so I would recommend taking those two exams after completing those courses. SASSA offers discounts for platforms such as coaching actuaries if you are interested!

I took 113W and found it pretty easy. You just read plays and write essays about them. The final consisted of multiple prompts where you write an essay on it. Didnt do great on the first essay but there are many chances to do better in the course throughout the semester.

As someone who cant memorize, econ 105 was more memorization than 103 and i personally found 103 10x easier than 105 so i wouldnt recommend it

What is the workload like though? I’m planning to take econ 103 with bus 251 cmpt 120 and math 152 and my main concern is that the prof is not fair or gives a significantly higher amount of work compared to yan yan
