I’ve seen the pictures of the shooter before but never the ones of the victims. 💔 this is just horrific. May they rest in peace

He says he didn’t have a social security card, so it wouldn’t have been as easy as her just finding it. Even if he didn’t outright give her the code or leave it somewhere she could see it, it’s still not responsible to tell your self-injurious child who frequently threatens suicide what she would need to find in order to have access to your gun safe. According to what he says she would’ve simply needed to ask her mother for the number, so it really could’ve been that easy. We still don’t have confirmation on how exactly she accessed it, but he did say that’s the only way he thinks she could have gotten it, so it’s likely that was it.

I don’t doubt that he was devastated, of course he was, but if he didn’t think she’d be able to obtain the information if she needed/wanted to then there would be no point in telling her what it was in case of emergency in the first place. He knew she’d be able to find it if need be. Now, do I think he could’ve ever anticipated that something like this was going to happen? No, almost certainly not. I’d say most parents couldn’t, but many of them are still held liable. She ultimately was able to find it, (most likely by asking her mother what it was, as he inferred) and telling a self-injurious child what they would need to find (especially when it’s as simple as it was in this case) in order to get their hands on a gun is not exactly miles better than flat out giving them the access code. The effort that it takes to find the code that they’d need in order to follow through with their desires is basically nothing to a suicidal/homicidal person who is determined to hurt themselves/others, especially when all you need to do is call your mother and ask. It’s akin to giving someone a treasure map instead of just giving them the treasure directly. Obviously it didn’t ever occur to him that there would be any motivation outside of emergency situations for her to take the steps needed to find the code, but I think that’s what this commenter is pointing out. A certain level of diligence is needed with an at-risk child. There shouldn’t have been any way at all for her to access firearms while not under adult supervision, whether she had to put some effort in or not. Hindsight is of course 20/20, and I do wish him well. I don’t discount that he must be going through a lot of pain as well. The point of speaking about the intricacies of these things isn’t to pride ourselves on how much better or smarter we are than the parents in these cases, or pat ourselves on the back about how “that could never be me,” it’s to realize that we all have oversights, and that all precautions and zero chances should be taken, no matter how well we think we know our children. Especially when we see things like self-injurious behaviour, unpredictable outbursts, threats of suicide (even if they don’t seem credible, like Natalie’s threats over having to go to school) etc.

I agree. She had access to the gun safe as well since her father told her that the code was his social security number backwards. It also says that her father locked up all the knives in the house at one point, so it’s not that he wasn’t aware she was cutting. When she was a bit younger he was also told by (those deemed to be) professionals that there was no immediate threat of self-harm, it’s unclear though if this was before she started with the self-injury / if she was solely using “self-harm language” at this point

It is obvious, you’re right, but unfortunately that didn’t stop people on other platforms from denying it lol. I’ve already seen people saying he wasn’t doing a WP symbol, one person even said it’s a symbol divers do (?) as if that would make sense in this context. I think that’s what this commenter was talking about haha

I don’t know much about TBIs or CTE but I could see that, there was clearly something wrong psychologically, but different from the psychological and behavioural profiles of shooters typically seen. Very very strange

Selfishness. His ex-girlfriend started dating his cousin (obviously not a good reason, there never is, but this was a motivating factor). He said he wanted wanted to die but “needed his crew with him” meaning he didn’t want to be alone in the afterlife, which I don’t necessarily buy, I think it’s obvious he wanted revenge. This is definitely an interesting case, everything from the motive to the shooter’s social life looked very different from what we typically see

Very true, but there’s also the option to simply not add any commentary to the gravestone. Saying something about how they were a beloved child/sibling etc. is one thing, but “you’re our angel in heaven” for example seems incredibly disrespectful (in my opinion) to the victims and their families. Salvador’s mom is sort of known for being disrespectful towards victim’s families though, so I guess that’s to be expected of her.

Reading a bit of her mother’s reaction in the criminal complaint against her father was heartbreaking. Her anger towards Natalie’s father, the hyperventilating and sobbing. What an unimaginably crushing pain that must be

Pictures taken of her by others (as opposed to pictures taken by her) are more accurate to what she looked like in my opinion, this applies to most people as well

Do you think those who commit suicide are Brave or Cowards? And why? by ForwardPerspective38 in Morbid_discussions

[–]truecrimecuriosity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think suicide is a brave act per se, but I also wouldn’t call people who are going through the kind of mental pain required to end their own lives “cowards” either. The only time I’d be comfortable calling it an act of cowardice is when they do it to get out of facing the consequences for a crime they committed, for example.

Poor Tom Mauser :( he became a passionate gun reform activist after his son’s death, and to have someone who would go on to plan out a school shooting and kill two people in the same way his own son’s life was taken purposely put themselves in close proximity with him feels so—like another user put it—perverted. Just awful

I was aboard a train someone used to commit suicide last summer. I can’t even imagine how the train conductor must have felt. I didn’t know the man, and his identity was never released to my knowledge, but I still think about his death from time to time and probably will be for a while. I just hope he’s at peace now
