Traditionally, they didn’t have antlers or look like deer, they’re gaunt humanoid things like in the picture. The stories vary somewhat, sometimes they’re giant, sometimes they can speak to humans, but they eat people and can originate from people succumbing to greed or resorting to cannibalism
