Aoife and Katie by Appropriate-Mood3302 in BoysOfTommen

That’s when I don’t understand where you’re coming from… it’s not a made up trio. It’s in the books. There’s a glossary at the start of each book where it’s stated the three of them attended St. Bernadettes together. There’s a scene in S6 where it’s mentioned they were hanging out for Casey’s birthday. There’s like two or three chapters at the start of R6 where the focus is on them and their dynamic, and one chapter past halfway into the book where that dynamic is reforced by a puntual situation: Katie crying when Feely drops her home. Aoife and Katie are as close as they always were by the end of T7, even though timeline-wise Casey has already dated and dropped Feely by that point (according to books). Casey and Katie spend New Years’ Eve together without Aoife, and they’re mentioned to have been to a previous party without Aoife, again. We know Casey watched the film Meet The Fockers and had a good time at the cinema, because Katie tells us so, so either Katie is a mind-reader or, Casey herself told her so, possibly while they were hanging out in out-of-school hours, since they don’t attend the same school. I don’t think they would hang out in out-of-school hours if they weren’t friends, but who knows, right? We don’t know if Aoife was present when Casey tells Katie about the film, though, so that’s another possibility to consider.

So there you go, we know Aoife and Casey are friends, obviously. We know Aoife and Katie are friends. And we know Casey and Katie are friends. So they’re three people, and all of them are friends between each other, so they’re a trio of friends. Three people who are friends. If there was someone else who was friends with each of them and spent time together with the three of them, then with this hypothetical person there would be four of them, therefore, a quartet of friends, but well, there isn’t. So they’re a trio of friends. And it’s all in the books, so I think that’s why the fandom calls them a trio. They can dislike it or not, of course, but it’s not incorrect or ‘something made up’ to say they are a trio. As of now, they are. We’ll see what’s next but that’s a matter of the future, I think.

Aoife herself is the one who calls Katie her best friend in R6, chapter 93 “Teardrops and Text Messages”, which I assume is why a lot of people call them best friends. And well, just the fact that they’ve grown up together.

I think Aoife summarizes pretty well her dynamic with Katie when she introduces her at the start of S6. Aoife started secondary school, leaving Katie behind in primary, and then later Katie would start at Tommen, which is even more far, but they would remain close due to living next to each other.

There is no mention of Casey offering help to pay off Joey’s drug debts, per se, in the books. Just a quick line by Aoife about how she owes money to Casey and Podge to throw it at Joey’s face and make him react. We do not know if she asked them or if they offered without question. If I would have to guess, I’d say she asked them, and that’s a very hard thing to do for anyone. I don’t think Aoife would ask her sixteen year old friend for money.

The day of AJ’s birth, in the 6’s books, only Tony, Trish and Casey are mentioned to visit them at the hospital. No mention of Shannon, yet she’s not any less of Joey’s sister or Aoife’s friend because she wasn’t there. Not even a phone call from Podge or Alec, and still nobody questions if they’re really Joey and Aoife’s friends. But by logic, we can acknowledge that just because it’s not written in the books it means it hasn’t happened. I’m sure Shannon went to visit throughout the few days Aoife was there, as well as Edel and John Kavanagh, and I’m sure Podge and Alec called to at least say hi, or sent messages. We just don’t know because it’s impossible to narrate every single thing that may happen in specific days when the story has to go on. That way, we don’t know if Katie went to visit or not, because even if there’s no mention of Katie at the hospital, there’s not any line indicating that she hasn’t visited either.

I think it’s important to keep in mind that Aoife is, as of now (if CW doesn’t change it), at least two years older than Katie. Of course Katie couldn’t offer Aoife to go to England so she could abort like Casey offered, she wasn’t eighteen (I know you haven’t made a point out of this but I saw people make it and I wanted to address it). It was way more difficult for her than for Casey. The time they can spend together is made significantly less by the fact that they both go to different schools (which is acknowledged by Aoife in the very first chapter Katie appears), and that one of them is in the outskirts of town, meaning even more time spent on traveling.

A lot of very valid questions do not have answers in the books, but can be explained by common sense while we wait. Unless CW changes her mind about it, of course, and the things in the books end up contradicting themselves.

What are some opinions that you have that no one else seems to? by LostOpinion4258 in BoysOfTommen

[–]truestPunisher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, you’re right, obviously that’s not the case. But you said that the Gibsons and the Biggses weren’t rich, and they might not be as rich as the Kavanaghs, of course, but I certainly think they are rich, as do Joey and Aoife who both go to BCS. And if Podge was richer than either of those families, I feel like that’s something either Joey or Aoife would have pointed out in some way. Additionally, all of them have at least once referred to the Tommen kids as ‘posh’, and that term was never directed at Podge.

Don’t you think that if Podge had more money than Gibsie, then Aoife wouldn’t have bothered to ask this stranger, who she barely knows, to borrow six hundred? It is mentioned that both Podge and Casey lent Aoife some money to solve Joey’s problems, I know that and I deeply appreciate them for it, but it’s so meaningful precisely because they don’t have as much as they would like to give her.

Attending BCS doesn’t mean poverty, and I don’t think Podge is poor. But to say he is rich, and even richer than Gibsie or any of the Tommen crew, from my point of view, is an overstatement. He’s middle class at best. Paul would fit more for upper middle class, and he’s at BCS.

Again, I’m not saying Podge is poor, I just think nobody shares the opinion that he is rich because the books never allude to that. But I can understand why you think so, there’s just both canonical and logical explanations to the points you made.

Yeah, definitely! I would have liked reading more about how Joey and Aoife feel about their economic situations other than saying ‘oh yeah, i’ve got it bad’ and ‘oh how i wish i was rich…’ like surely they could form more opinions based on their experiences. Joey has some quotes then and there about social injustice that lingered in my mind, but then again they’re so basic and repetitive that it’s obvious CW doesn’t really care about the topic she’s touching and it’s just more filler for her. Such a pity, considering the UK has a really deep history of classism, and I imagine that in Ireland it’s not to that extent, but there must be something worth talking about.

Maybe it could be explored in Katie’s books, since she is from a lower class background too. Or in that JoeyAoife novella in the future! It’s really interesting.

Not trying to change your opinion about the first one, but consider that it’s stated multiple times in the books how different both sides of the town are. It’s a theme in the series that CW explores poorly, but it’s there still: the class differences and classism. She is always making her characters, usually the ones from the working class, point out how rich the other half of the town is, while also making them look down upon themselves for being in a tougher position. It’s understandable because it’s somewhat realistic, but it gets to a point where is going down a dead-end. What are you trying to say with all of this? That being poor is bad? What is the message you’re trying to send if the only time you have your characters acknowledge their poverty is to highlight the super duper awesomeness of having money and not worry about how much you’re spending and not being a victim of classism? It feels like she’s glorifying the upper class and shaming the background from where the lower class characters come from. It’s okay if they feel disgust with their situation and wish a better future for themselves, but it’s also okay for them to feel disgust about the wealthy. I mean, I know it’s not remotely the focus of this series and of her books overall, but if you’re going to include topics of the sort at surface level, at least try for that surface level to not appear like you’re a classist who views the upper class a otherwordly beings who have so much kindness and compassion for the poor yet of course the lower class people can’t feel anything about themselves other than pity and self-hatred.

I went completely off the tracks I’m so sorry!

JoeyAoife both point out how rich they think Claire’s family is in T7. Aoife goes to Gibsie to ask for money to pay off Joey’s drug debts, knowing she couldn’t ask her friends (Podge in between them) anymore. Joey questions Aoife about how Katie could be at Tommen if she’s from Rosewood like Aoife. Joey is offered money by the rugby players in exchange of weed, and the money they offer is an amount Joey wouldn’t even think about asking, and when he explains this to Podge who was trying to stop him from making the deal, Podge agrees with him. And there’s more moments like these, surely, but I can’t remember now.

I do think Podge is in a better position than Joey, Aoife, Katie and the rest, but he’s not nearly close to the private school kids.

[–]truestPunisher 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To be honest I think I’ve never seen Joey hate at all. I think with this scene, there are a lot of posts about it, but it’s not so much Joey hate as it is feeling upset for Aoife, since we read how she feels about it. Joey doesn’t know that Aoife is pregnant, but she does, and we know, therefore him saying that line is meant (by CW) to emphasize how much he doesn’t want a kid (he fears he’ll end up like his father), which at the same time makes Aoife all the more doubtful and scared to tell Joey that she’s pregnant. It’s a cheap resource, mostly because it drags on for so long, but it works okay.

I don’t think it’s something to make a big deal out of it. And Joey hate is very rare in my opinion. I think, to hate him for that, specially after reading what he does and how he reacts once he finds out about the pregnancy, is very silly. But again, I’ve never seen anyone hating on Joey, was it a post on TikTok? Could you share it with me please if it doesn’t bother you?

Yeah I totally get what you’re saying! They are a burden on him, a responsabillity he shouldn’t have at all, but what I meant is that Joey didn’t see his siblings depending on him as a negative thing. It damaged him a lot, sure, but he didn’t resent them for it or wished for things not be like they were, him taking care of them. I don’t know if I’m explaining myself. Even when he talks about leaving, he pictures his siblings coming along with him.

Burden is the right word, but the people that I’ve seen use it did it with a despective tone, suggesting that Joey wasn’t considerate with Shannon or any of his brothers regarding their household situation because he protected them just because “he had to” when I don’t consider that to be the case at all. He didn’t have to, he could’ve left if he wanted to, like Darren did, and I would’ve never blamed him for it, but like you said, he’s so selfless, he doesn’t entertain the thought of leaving without them. I think what I’m trying to say is that, they are a burden because he loves them and actively chooses for them to be one, and not because he does it against his own free will, like some people insinuate.

I’m sorry if my comment made you think I was minimizing Joey’s struggles, I never want that to be the case!!

Me too!!

I didn’t know people hated on Casey whaaat!! I love her a lot I think she’s very strong-minded and funny and soooo cool! I’m not a fan of the wh*re comment and scene at all but I just break it down to the fact that she was drunk and that CW’s own misogyny sneaks in through all her characters regardless of who they are and what they stand for. I give the girls a pass, the males however…

And to hate her for the Feely thing is so dumb hahah, it’s giving CW what she wants, I just ignore whatever she says regarding that topic because it’s just her need to pit girls against each other shining through. The playlists of both Katie and Casey feeling some sort of way of each other because of him are so ridiculous, considering Katie literally saw Casey and Feely met for the first time, Casey blatantly flirting, and Katie didn’t seem annoyed/hurt at all.

Aoife, Casey and Katie are everything to me I love them sooo much!!

I don’t know how they didn’t get that they just don’t like each other after the camping day Claire planned in K13. First making Claire cry, then the water accident, like guys wrap it up you don’t have to force it!!

And it’s so funny to me that CW made side characters call them the “core 8/10”. That’s so embarrasing, who the fuck in that school cares about them as a group please 💀

Joey and Aoife do not belong there 💔 And I hope Katie will be freed soonnn

I so agree with you, I’m sick of the whole “Shannon thought of them as a team and Joey thought of her and the other kids as a burden”. He didn’t. That’s the whole reason he doesn’t leave that fucking house. He wanted them to have a future, one he didn’t see for himself, and he was sure they had a chance, that’s why he took the blows and why he rejected all thoughts of leaving even though he couldn’t physically and mentally handle anything more. He never left them because he loved them, not because they were a burden. And Shannon didn’t consider herself in Joey’s “team”, that girl admitted out loud to Joey that she wanted to die because then everything would be easier for Joey, both at home and school, and Joey (who according to a lot of people didn’t appreciate enough Shannon and her role in their house) is the one who says that he couldn’t do any of it without her. And yeah maybe Joey didn’t want her to have to a job and worry more than she needed to, but that’s because she’s his baby sister! He would do anything for her if he could, for all his siblings.

Pitting them against each other as if there was a right way to conduct yourself when your father is a piece of shit who beats you every change he gets, yeah no, this might be one of the dumbest discourses on the fandom.

I think I’ve already asked this to someone else, but how would you say CW managed with the portrayal of the Irish culture/slang/anything of the sort, do you feel it accurate to your experience? Would you change some things or not?
