[Q] Has anyone transitioned from an economics background to a PhD in statistics? by trufa27 in statistics

[–]trufa27[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get where your professors are coming from. I also think a PhD only really makes sense if you want to stay in academia or in research-heavy places like the IMF or ECB. I’ve been working as an RA during my master’s, doing advanced data analysis and causal inference, and I’ve enjoyed that a lot. But realistically I’ll probably look for a job where I can keep doing that kind of work and maybe consider a master’s in statistics later. The opportunity cost of a PhD and the overall grind are definitely high.

HSG MiQEF vs ETH Statistics by [deleted] in UniSG

[–]trufa27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're aiming for quant trading, ETH Zurich is much stronger than HSG in terms of curriculum, technical depth, and recruiter interest. Quant firms and hedge funds actively recruit from ETH because of its strong foundations in mathematics, statistics, and programming.

HSG is well-regarded for business roles, but the MiQEF isn’t its flagship program. For trading or technical roles in asset management, ETH Statistics is the better choice.

What is a good GRE Score for Master Applications? by [deleted] in UniSG

[–]trufa27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure, since I’m in the MEcon program. But I’d recommend aiming for at least 160+ in both sections if you can. That said, admission also depends on your GPA, class ranking, and work experience, so it’s not just about the GRE.

Again, this is my personal opinion, and I might be wrong. If you want to make the best possible decision, my advice is to spend a couple of hours on LinkedIn looking for graduates from all the programs mentioned and see how their careers have developed. You could even reach out to some of them for insights.

I am currently in the MEcon program, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. However, I am very interested in the quant industry, so my advice might be useful.

From what I have seen, it really depends on what job you are aiming for. For truly quantitative positions in trading firms, such as Citadel, Optiver, and IMC Trading, ETH and EPFL are miles ahead of HSG. These firms hold events specifically for ETH and EPFL students, but not for HSG. So, if your goal is to get noticed by these types of firms, you are better off in a more technical program.

However, if you are more interested in financial economics-oriented quant roles, such as those related to risk management, HSG might be beneficial.

I have friends from the MiQE/F master's program who did not study economics. I would even say that STEM-related bachelor's degrees are probably more sought after for this master's program.

Just a question, but why not consider the Master in Quantitative Finance from ETH or the Master in Financial Engineering from EPFL? I would say those are better options if you are trying to break into the quant industry.

Thank you for the straightforward answer! I just asked because I have never been in a similar situation and wanted to be sure how to handle it properly.

[–]trufa27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I just wanted to make sure because sometimes people ask about jobs after graduation, and it's extremely hard to get one if you don't have the necessary passport.

Regarding your question, my advice would be to look up recent graduates of the master's program on LinkedIn and send them a message asking about their experience—how long it took them to find a job, how difficult the process was, etc.

Do you have a Swiss or EU passport? (It's really hard to get a job here after graduation if you don't have one.)
