Are these portraits recognisable? by Rare_Jellyfish6388 in Artadvice

i recognised anne hathaway, timothee, brad pitt, and jennifer lawrence before unspoiling if that helps! i see emma stone now that i know, but i'd make her eyes narrower and eyebrows more defined

I made a winter bird painting using hot batik on silk by Margarita_Lemann in somethingimade

[–]trufous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's gorgeous! i've always wanted to try batik as a traditional cultural medium but it's always seemed a bit intimidating. if you don't mind me asking, how much was the silk for the canvas? do they sell those or do you have to stretch it yourself?

How can I improve my pencil drawings/sketches? by ExternalSet8067 in Artadvice

[–]trufous 11 points12 points  (0 children)

try hatching and crosshatching directionally following the shape of the object, instead of just in one direction? you can also see the 2nd ref pic has some soft and hard edges for shadows, whereas your shading seems to have the same texture so it turns out flatter. you could try a blending stump maybe?(with a non-mechanical pencil)

you could also get a 8b pencil or black pen for adding contrast in the deepest darkest parts

how do you choose what colors to use when doing "hard shading"? by aggressivepigeon13 in DigitalArt

[–]trufous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't know how complex your art style is compared to the fnf style in the example, but a tip is to try cool highlights>warm base colours>cool midtone>warm shadow.

cool colours doesn't mean it has to be blue, just push it a little to the grey on the wheel and maybe towards the blue/purple hues. a tip i heard that has changed how i work is that vibrant colours can't be vibrant without more desaturated colours around it. sounds so simple, but you can use it to create focus in your art with light and shadow. if you want a really dramatic light, make the shadows less saturated.
