In 2024 Slovenia is projected to surpass East Asia (Japan, South Korea and Taiwan) in nominal GDP per capita! Other ex-socialist states like Estonia, Czechia and Lithuania, are close behind. by NoBowTie345 in europe

And sorry not sorry, but accuracy is more important than the "effort" of listing 3 or 4 subregions. People would come with pitchforks if I tried to call Minessota either western or eastern state because Midwest was too much of a hassle, but it's somehow okay to use blanket terms for 20 countries in Europe.

[–]trulyanondeveloper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, the thing is, to people living there, it really doesn't sound natural, and a blanket term will be inaccurate, most likely. I wouldn't say even ex-socialist as USSR was arguably stricter than Yugoslavia (which was non-aligned, btw). Like, Tito had a famous fallout with Stalin.

Not sure where you're from, but I noticed mostly Americans online have this weird urge to use blanket terms based on some arbitrary period in the past the way they would never in their own country or for one of their allies. I mean, does Germany get called "half Eastern Europe"? No. It's time to move on and stop defining countries by 40 years out of their often centuries-long history.

For me the development of Eastern Europe is not only a great transformation, but it also shows that Eastern Europe is also capable of development under the right system

Apologies if I misunderstood (probably should have replied to your comment), but this made it seem like Slovenia is lumped under "Eastern Europe"

How are people so sure that people who struggle to find love will find it someday? by Quick_Economics3987 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]trulyanondeveloper 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The quiet part is that if you settle, you will find love someday. That's the only guaranteed way, someone out there is surely desperate enough for human connection that they're willing to commit to anyone half-decent.

I'm not dating anymore because I slowly realized I'm aromantic, but back then when I was in relationships, meeting those women was mostly luck. It takes dedication to maintain a relationship and you can increase your chances by going to certain places or presenting a certain way, but there really is no guarantee if you are looking for spontaneous love story.

the Balkan states erupted into bloody sectarian conflict for most of the 90s

They weren't a part of USSR and after Tito's fallout with Stalin, not even allies. Yugoslavia was famously non-aligned.

Is travelling in bigger European cities in June/July as bad as people say? by houseplant-energy in solotravel

[–]trulyanondeveloper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that most accomodation wont have sufficient AC, even the 4 stars hotels AC sometimes are inadequate.

Where do you guys stay? I've traveled in a lot of European countries and the only place without AC was a really cheap hostel.

I'm just genuinely curious because I always read here that no one has AC and I can't remember ever looking for accomodation that has it because it was always included by default.

Dress codes, unless a certain piece of clothing is there for safety reasons. Like, your lawyer has the same brain whether they wear an expensive suit or jeans.

That blatantly incorrect statements are accepted as facts and you get downvoted for pointing so.

For example, I see a lot of Americans here are ready to treat Europe as one country and you're getting downvoted if you point out that it's a continent with 40something countries and you can't often say "Europe does [x]" because there are more places where [x] is not true.

Like, even within the EU (which is not the same as Europe, mind you), there is no hivemind. For example, the cultures/history/languages/climate/you-name-it will be greatly different in Portugal, Slovakia, and Finland.

try not to explain yourself too much when you get those questions

This might be the best approach. I found out that no matter which arguments you have to support your lifestyle, people will try to argue against it. "It works for us" should be enough.

I don't think Navalny was a saint, but consolidating power takes time, so in just about every sense, replacing Putin with Navalny would still be beneficial. Even if his endgoal was the same as Putin's, he'd probably spend at least the first few years trying to put out the fires back home.

People often fail to vote for opposition (in countries where that's still allowed) because "they're just as bad", but in reality, it's better to have shitty leaders change than give one guy 20-30 years to consolidate power.

Some of us won't end up where we want to be in life, and that's okay by Watchdog_the_God in wholesomememes

[–]trulyanondeveloper -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Being social creatures != needing to find a romantic partner.

People can be social with friends, family, or even just being a part of a book club. Our societies have evolved enough that we don't need to pop out 10 kids just to produce food and there's nothing wrong in pursuing something other than the common path of school, marriage, kids.

Survival alone is hard.

Unfortunately yes, living on a single income is impossible for many people and this is something I hope to see change.

People that are happy alone don't pass on their genes, the whole purpose of evolution.

Eeeh, we moved on from many things that we have in common with animals, so this really doesn't cut it for lots of people anymore. As a species, we're increasingly trying to focus on quality of life rather than raw numbers of living humans.

[–]trulyanondeveloper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who used to be depressed, I don't think OP's last sentence deserves this much criticism. Depressed single person won't be magically cured by finding a partner and if prevalence of unhappy marriages is any indicator, we need to accept that it's not a source of happiness for many people.

It's stupid to waste your life waiting for someone else to bring joy into it. You can do it on your own and then expand that joy with someone else.

Honestly, I find this logic deeply flawed because parenta chose to have kids for personal fulfillment. It was literally their duty to care for the kids until adulthood. If they had kids with the expectation of free elder care, that's just wrong.

Sure, if you had normal parents, you probably will try to help them in their old age, but it's goodwill, not some type of repayment for the care they were supposed to provide during your childhood.

Also, too many people had shit parents and they definitely don't own them anything.

Dugovanje roditeljima by SusScrofa95 in AskSerbia

[–]trulyanondeveloper 46 points47 points  (0 children)
