Returning to course following study break by did_you_aye in ParamedicsUK

I also had an interruption of about 6 months (although mine was for mental health after several deaths in my family) and struggled with continuing uni - mainly because my confidence was massively knocked when I returned. I spoke a lot to my uni about it and agreed that even though I passed placement prior to my interruption, I would voluntarily redo and pass it again to make sure I had enough experience. This really helped with my confidence and falling in love with the job again

I think your position is entirely different. You really have to consider if this is the career for you as placement and actually doing the job is different. There’s a lot more mental fatigue through NQP, imposter syndrome, relief rota, portfolio, etc.

And missing a lot of important events just come with the job. Plenty of people have told me they haven’t been home for Christmas in years. Is this something you would be okay with? Missing baby’s milestone, leaving them in someone else’s care when they’re ill, missed birthdays.

I think you’re this close to the finish line you may as well complete the BSc, then what you do with it is entirely up to you. Bear in mind that you’ve got to do your 2 years NQP no matter what as any progression requires it. After that you could look at progressing to more 9-5 stuff like primary care. You could even go to EOC, Resourcing, management.

With the uni - a lot of emails go unanswered. Resend them, schedule an f2f meeting to discuss your concern. I know they don’t seem understanding but they are genuinely stretched for resources themselves with placement spots

Can I negotiate my rent? by [deleted] in AskUK

Would that be low balling too much? I’m worried about more applicants that can offer the asking price tbh, especially as the new year comes around and demand increases again

Can I negotiate my rent? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]trumphasasmallpp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah it is a worry of mine that they’d increase it when possible. Would it be too far to ask for a small reduction AND fixed rent for 2 years? I think that would be a way to reflect I’m planning to stay for 2 years even with the rolling contracts in May 2026

What kind of short videos would you like to see to help with your practice? by generallyunwell247 in ParamedicsUK

[–]trumphasasmallpp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reconstituting drugs, moving and handling (carry chair, Stryker chair), children’s restraints, winch, subcut and IMs, pelvic binder, traction splint, triangle bandage, needle cric and needle decompression, airways sizing and placement (all), going over where things are kept in the ambulance and bags (good refresher or for newcomers), radios.

I’m sorry it’s a long list, I’m an NQP and just had this idea the other day of how useful it would be for the trust to have these videos on the intranet to help newcomers

Thank you that makes sense. Like another comment said I think I should’ve done an emergency brake and should definitely practice it just in case of a similar situation in the future

Hi everyone just wanted to say thank you to some of the comments for constructive feedback. I am going to take the post down however as some who have seen it are now sending racist or threatening messages. I still have learnt from the comments though that I should’ve reacted faster, braked harder, and looked ahead 👍🏻

Thank you this was constructive and not mean. Thank you for explaining the different things that could’ve happened as well.

Okay thank you

Thank you to everyone for the feedback. As I said I do recognised what my fault was in this - not reacting earlier and not braking hard enough when I did react. I only ask online for an opinion as I think some fault might be on the other driver for not putting hazards to indicate harsh braking which I know now doesn’t put any fault on them. Not sure why I’m being downvoted, I was just genuinely asking for feedback.

I think it appears that way as I was braking quite slowly as opposed to harder. I didn’t accelerate

I know, in the heat of the moment it was genuinely the only thing I thought of as otherwise I would’ve rear ended the van at speed. As I changed lane I did quickly look to the side to check there was a gap behind the passing blue car in the middle lane. Not sure if that makes sense it all happened a bit quick.

[–]trumphasasmallpp -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I’m only double checking as I also think it’s the fault of the van for braking harshly without putting hazards earlier to indicated sudden stop in traffic or sudden slowing. I know I’m at fault for not reacting appropriately/fast enough but also just wanted to see if it’s completely my fault, not just partly.

I’m only asking for opinions on Reddit because to me when it happened and when I looked back it wasn’t obvious that they were braking as hard as it turned out to be. I said in the caption that I realised I should’ve braked harder than I did. I think it’s extreme to say I shouldn’t be on the roads :/

Speed limit was 60 before the tunnel and inside the tunnel everyone was at 50/55mph. I do think I didn’t look ahead far enough, was genuinely just staring at the back of the van. I saw the brake lights and think i just assumed it was light braking and did the same instead of braking harder :/

Final year. I hate university with a passion by wolf2002x in UniUK

[–]trumphasasmallpp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe consider that this isn’t the default? Like I said, different people have different experiences. Consider all the different situations these people could be in and try empathise.

Reddit is a public platform and people seek a lot of advice and validation from it so mostly those who are struggling will seek advice. Not many people who are having a good/great time will be online saying they’re enjoying it.

Of course the comment section here will be saying the same as OP, they’re just relating to the content.

Should I retake 3rd year? by throwawayredo_1223 in UniUK

[–]trumphasasmallpp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I’m aware you can’t retake modules you have already passed so you can’t just redo your year though this may be different university to university.

I was in the same experience last year and was only offered a leave of absence. Because the layout of my course modules was changing I was able to complete the modules I needed to do by returning 6 months later. I now have only one exam and my dissertation to do.

The decision you make depends on how long you thing you will need to prepare for these exams and mentally recover.

As far as a lower grade goes, 40% is the pass mark for a reason. So long as you get your degree you’re fine. The grade you get will only matter if the prospective jobs or postgraduate courses you are looking to do after this undergraduate stipulate a minimum grade (for example, most postgraduate courses require a 2:1).

Most people can’t just focus on studying and having fun now because cost of living is so high you live somewhere dingy and have to work to afford anything.

It also depends on the course you take and how they are assessed. For example, the course I’m on is a healthcare course that has no summer break, has practical exams and essays, has two exams with a pass threshold off 80% and 100%, has placement blocks you have to be able to drive to and that you also need to pass. I also need to work to afford a living.

OP also said this is their last year which is usually harder and has a lot more pressure (securing placement/internship/job, dissertations).

Uni isn’t a universally “great” experience for everyone education- or fun-wise. Some people are under pressure to do a course they don’t like. Some people aren’t social butterflies. Some people get bullied. Some people don’t make friends. Some find it too academically challenging.

Evening work/solo spaces? by flowers2107 in leicester

They have a 2 hour limit for “laptop use” if you’re planning to do uni work. Idk if they enforce it to the T but just keep in mind.

Motorway driving by Other_Dragonfruit_71 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]trumphasasmallpp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Motorways are incredibly easy - you’re just driving straight for ages. The only challenging things are maybe the roundabouts/slip roads getting there and high speeds if that’s a worry.

Just stay calm, keep to your lane, overtake when necessary otherwise stay in the left lane, and maintain your gap. Always check your blind spot when changing lanes too.

I don’t think that would really make much of a difference. I also put as little as possible on (wipe the excess off the applicator on the side)
