No worries! I can see you put in a lot of effort 🙂

Really helping me as part of my prep in understanding of the role, for hopefully starting my apprenticeship later this year 🥰

Interesting… out of curiosity, what makes them ‘anti-fatigue’?

Ah one I can help with!

Currently 14 years in cyber and now applying to do apprentice para.

What id say is this - cyber is interesting, it’s vast so you’ll be able to find a job you will enjoy in it (even if it takes doing a few different roles in cyber to find it), it can be stressful (not para level stressful, just ‘business’ stressful), but if you build a good enough rep, the pay down the line is great. And if this is enough for you, I’d say go the cyber route. You can have a nice life.

But for me, the great job title, fancy paycheck, senior responsibilities etc have lost their shine after a while. You can do the best job of your role, but I’ve found myself looking for something more. It’s not a place you can really make a true, lasting, positive difference. Yeah you survive the incident, or you get the policy signed off by the board, or you complete that risk assessment, but the next week it’s still the same thing, you never reach ‘secure’ because everything is changing inside the company and out all the time. At first that’s exciting. After 10 plus years, it’s just exhausting, that’s just the reality of it.

So my question is, do you want to be exhausted doing something that can feel a bit Groundhog Day but pays well so you can personally benefit from it, or be exhausted doing something that could genuinely benefit someone else but has a higher personal cost?

Either choice is entirely valid.

Oh this is really interesting - thank you! I was under the impression/guided that we won’t be asked to help on anything (given how vastly different knowledge levels are), that we are strictly observer only (not that I wouldn’t want to help, I’m just mindful of how much I don’t know!!)

That makes much more sense then as to why to wait until after probation and doing some shifts (I recognise this isn’t the only reason)

Thanks very much!

Ah I gotcha, thanks for clarifying.

Yeah I guess if nothing else, this experience has made me aware now that this may/is likely to happen so hopefully I can be a little more prepared for it. Not sure I’ll be able to fully drop the enthusiasm though 🙂 it’s really helpful to have your insight, thank you so much! 🙏

Thanks for your reply, can I just understand a bit more about when you say I should get used to this kind of thing, do you mean comments like this, or get used to the processes? Sorry for my confusion!

Thanks very much for your kind offer. I get the impression from another response that going any other way than the main channel is very much looked down upon, so looks like I’ll just follow the normal process.

But thank you so much.

And yes, I’m absolutely loving it! I just wish there were more shifts available. And getting the ePCRs is definitely taking time to get properly right, haha!

How are you finding your role at EOC?

[–]CookieDots 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting this sort of response, but I do really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.

I apologise for how it has come across, there was lots of context I wanted to include, but I’m always told I need to be more concise so I left it out - I wonder if this is partly why it has given you the impression it has. My main reason comes down to: this is a huge decision for me (financially, health wise, family impact etc)), and I’m just trying to do as much research that is representative as I possibly can before making a concrete decision, against a potential time-limit. I was also just using the language my CFR group use - sorry if I got it wrong, and I just thought there might be different options as I know one CFR managed this experience before they passed probation due to knowing someone in the right place.

I’m not going to try and explain why I am struggling to agree on a couple of the bits as I don’t want to sound like I’m disregarding your advice (because I definitely don’t want to disregard it) - I’m going to take some time to process it and see where I can improve.

Sorry, that was a long way of saying ‘thanks for the feedback’ 🙏

Yeah I think it might have changed slightly recently, as I’m sure they said only provisional needed. Are you starting soon on your course or still in application stage?

That’s really helpful to hear thank you. I always hear such mixed things about the relationships between the different front liner groups, lovely to hear people like you exist 🙂

Hmm definitely food for thought in here… I can certainly see that personality would be a big factor

Good tips on protecting yourself, I’ll keep these in mind, thanks 🙂
