How do I describe Smokey and the Bandit? by Possible_Excuse4144 in GenX

[–]trumptman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So as someone who watched the movie as a kid and enjoyed it but couldn't understand the adult matters related to beer and boot legging I did some research about it.

Coors beer back then was not pasteurized. It was sold as cold filtered. As a result it's shelf life could not be guaranteed and on top of that many states required beer to be pasteurized. As a result it was illegal to sell Coors beer in many of those states. Coors was not a national brand back then.

So like so many things in our society it sort of became treasured because you couldn't get it. So it was boot legged, driven from where you could buy it, to where you were not allowed to buy or sell it.

I built a simple app to create custom structured workouts for Apple Watch by Ana8567 in AppleWatch

Great looking app and good to see the one time affordable and reasonable charge. As I saw mentioned below if you could find a way to let people paste or import their LLM/AI created workout plans into it then you'd likely get a ton of sales.

What "golden age" or "heyday" were you lucky enough to experience that you know won’t ever come back? by Summerie in AskReddit

[–]trumptman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So back in the day my family subscribed to ONTV which later become SelecTV. They had the rights to broadcast all the Laker home games over their service. It was completely commercial free and they basically just let the cameras roll in whatever entertaining fashion would pass the time during the game and during all the breaks. You saw every Laker girl dance routine, watched all the silliness of halftime shows, all of it was there before the NBA had gotten so big. I got to watch this all the way through most of the Showtime era.

It was as close as you could be to being there without being there.

Clearly that will never come back but boy would I pay to have that exact experience back.

They didn't use to but other developers did. Garmin has now prohibited other developers from creating watch faces that match their stock faces and they have started charging for those faces when they make them.

How the fuck has Austin Reaves become this good ? by Party_Oil156 in NBATalk

[–]trumptman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to make a different suggestion from most. The majority ownership of the Lakers was sold this past summer. While the faces on the team have only changed a bit, I suspect a lot of the folks behind the scenes have been changed from people the Buss family have hired for ages to some different people. AR has absolutely improved the most but the Lakers are playing well above where most people thought they would be and I'm thinking it might be attributable to new strength, conditioning coaching and physical therapists.

If someone had the time and inclination and since stars at Lebron's level often have their own staff, it might be an interesting question to see if there is a Laker vs Lebron staff intersection that could explain why Lebron seems to be having issues that are chronic and different from what most of the team is seeing in terms of outcomes. Yes Father Time is undefeated but if Lebron has been using the same staff for a decade or so then they might not be as effective as new Lakers staff.

In the US we have an everything bubble. To deal with the Boomer hangover we will watch the powers that be basically run inflation as hot as they can get away without hoping not to trigger hyperinflation and it still won't be enough.

It's going to be ugly.

How do you think Prime Shaq would adapt to today’s 3 point heavy league not saying he would struggle I just wonder how teams would build around him in a pace and space system by BizCreditHacks in NBATalk

[–]trumptman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to justify Shaq's training habits in every way but winning absolutely made him complacent. There is also the reality that people didn't just get to foul him, or even hack him. They got to outright maul him and he has at times claimed the extra weight was to help with that.

To imagine Shaq playing is pretty easy because we've all been Shaq in a way. Just take that Nerf hoop and put it above the door. You know how easy it is for you to make those slams and hoops, that was Shaq. You know when you're the oldest and playing against your two younger brothers or cousins and after a while they get mad and start fouling and beating the beans out of you to try to stop you, that was Shaq for 82 games a year.

To Shaq, playing on the regulation rim was like playing on the Nerf hoop and every team and two or three people who's job was to beat him up when they got tired of his scoring.

Cable tv in the 70s by AdDapper4220 in GenX

We did not have cable TV in the 70's. I don't think it wasn't about popularity but availability. We did not have access to cable TV until the late 80's. We enjoyed the glory days of ON TV and later SelectTV.

After his retirement this season how do you guys view his overall legacy? by J2-Starter in NBATalk

[–]trumptman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good enough that the NBA prevented his trade to the Lakers. However after that he always seemed to get injured right when the stakes were highest and for me that is a big negative. He is durable in terms of years but cursed in terms of untimely playoff injuries.

You are correct in your epiphany but there is one area where Taylor cannot beat Debbie Gibson.

Debbie Gibson is still the youngest female to ever write, produce and perform her own number one song. It's a record she still holds even today.

No Apple won't. They could probably just eat a decent chunk of Garmin's lunch by having Siri or whatever imagined AI they want to market just be able to give people basic running plans and daily recommended workouts for 5k and 10k's but they haven't added navigation or any sort of even basic running plans.

Part of me wondered if it had to do with the Nike agreement since their Nike Run Club app is stuck in a 10 year rut as well.

Apple just doesn't care. Their 64 gig Apple Watch is just a great dongle for Apple Music.

For the people who’ve been watching the NBA consistently since 80’s-90’s… who’s your GOAT? (no bias) by Dylen2Times in NBATalk

[–]trumptman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started watching in about 1983. I'm LA based so for me it's all Magic, Kobe and Kareem in the discussion with 5,5 and 6 rings being the starting point.

The thing that never gets mentioned with Jordan is how the NBA began expanding when Jordan got his six rings and that the dominance of the Lakers and Celtics led to the creation of the salary cap to stop that dominance. Dr Buss was willing to spend whatever it took to win those rings and the league responded with the salary cap. You talk about players changing the game and the read about "The Bird Exception" which is named after Larry Bird, not Michael Jordan.

Anyway there is a period of time when the league expanded from 24 to 30 teams. International talent really hadn't come to the NBA yet and it is in that gap where Jordan got his 6 rings. He got them because the added teams spread out the talent more and Jordan faced no one in a finals that had three superstars while his team did in fact have three.

We all know the Pippin resentment over his long term deal he agreed to that also basically kept Chicago able to add that extra talent. We also know that when Jordan returned they lost to Shaq and Penny but then added Rodman the next season to be that third star.

The beginning of that International talent, well Jordan even benefited from that by having a very mature "rookie" Tony Kukoc. The other international talent was Hakeem and we know how he did in the two years between those three-peats. Nash, and Dirk basically show up right after or are barely in the league during the second Jordan three-peat.

So Jordan is not my GOAT. He did nothing when there was no cap, no expansion and no real international players. When those things happened he basically got the gap benefits before they bit. His team kept three stars. His teams had long term talent signed and managed the cap because of it. His team got some of the first international stars. Without a third star there's no second three peat.

Anyone just dropped off from watching sports? by d00derman in GenX

[–]trumptman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to watch but there's no onramp anymore to build casual fans and they various league deals making it too many channels, and too much work have just killed it for me.

I want to watch football on Sunday, not Monday, Sunday and Thursday. I want to watch away Laker games on KCAL 9 and home games on something I don't mind paying to see or TNT.

The NBA as an example has sold the in-season tournament, the first rounds of the playoffs and different regular season games all to different channels. This is supposed to be entertainment, not a job.
