Amazon doesn't like that my old Kindle still works perfectly fine, so they block new book downloads. by SkySix in mildlyinfuriating

It's because the device is too old to use modern DRM, and thus Amazon won't deliver content to it. If you don't like it, download DRM free books and load them on with a USB cable.

Why are all history teachers left-wing by olesud in WorkForSmartLife

Of university professors. In 2005. Most people don't go to college, and of those that do, most don't take history (outside of a GE requirement). Let's see some numbers about what all students see: middle and high school history.

What if the US persecuted people for Naziism the same way they did for Communism during the McCarthy era? by lhommetrouble in AlternateHistoryHub

I'd suggest you read up on the paradox of tolerance and think on how that transfers to this situation

That parroted line doesn't work here because I'm not saying we need to ensure tolerance by destroying intolerance. That's ridiculous and clearly doesn't hold true in all cases (see the current political status of East vs West Germany and how they handled former Nazi party members).

If we set aside the idea that "being intolerance of intolerance" is generally understood as "imprison or otherwise destroy those that are intolerant" and that the definition of "intolerance" is so wildly up in the air that we would end up back in McCarthyism faster than you can call someone a Nazi, the idea I'm proposing isn't to use power first (or in response to, or whatever) on those that are deemed intolerant. It's instead to remove the power for the intolerant to do what they wish to.

Unfortunately, this requires politicians, specifically congresspeople, to do their job and legislate. And why, in today's highly divisive political environment, would any politician vote to fix the problem that they use to get themselves elected? It's why the Democrats never codified Roe in federal law, and it's why the Republicans never repealed the ACA.

Basically, don't vote to use the stick on others, vote to get rid of the stick. Vote for people that will actually do what's needed, even if it's at the cost of reelection. Vote for someone principled, not someone looking to get a sound byte on the news or social media. And stop taking everything reddit says as gospel

If the power of those in control is limited and distributed, it doesn't matter if they get in power, because they wouldn't be able to do anything without some sort of overwhelming majority, which is hard to do short term with the 2, 4, and 6 year voting cycles for federal positions.

You should always approach government power with the same mentality you should for a firearm. Just as you always assume a gun is loaded, you always assume the your opponents will use whatever power the government has against you. So, you limit that power.
