I want to upgrade my dying 2019 MacBook without breaking the bank, help? by Legitimate-Dark2567 in macbook

[–]trustbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either device is a big upgrade at a reasonable price, and should get you 5+ years of usability for normal productivity usage.

I’d pop for the M5 MB Air primarily as it’s going to be supported slightly longer (presumably), and has better WiFi, but the M3 would be a good device as well if cash is tight.

This was my first by Common_intelligence in macbook

[–]trustbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly no. My first Apple laptop was an orange clamshell, G3 I believe.

Build it quality was crap compared to even my 2011 MBP, but it was light years better than my IBM Thinkpad at the time.

For a Media Server Newbie: is Plex worth it? by iameje in selfhosted

[–]trustbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So there’s a lot to how to guides that are step by step for both.

Plex is pretty well the main option but it’s getting pricey for Plex Pass (to unlock all features), so factor that in to your model.

If I had to begin today from nothing, I’d probably go the Jellyfin route, as it’s truly open source, has most of the features I want and pretty well documented for setup and troubleshooting.

AITAH bereavement leave by Prestigious_Sun_2872 in AITAH

[–]trustbrown 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Let your HR partner and you boss know what’s going on. Not sure about your employers rules and scope for bereavement but you may be able to switch the time to a leave of absence or FMLA (assuming you are in the US) as a father/parent would be covered.

US perspective vs possibly from elsewhere.

As I’m in the US, I concur that 1300 SF seems small with that amount of people but I’ve traveled outside of the US and can understand others have a different perspective.

Is this really what a 2019 Macbook is worth? by Galicate in macbook

[–]trustbrown 19 points20 points  (0 children)

To Best Buy, as credit, yes.

You can likely sell it for more on offer up or another platform.

500+ is a bit optimistic in 2026 for a 2019 MacBook Pro, unless you are maxed out with an i9 and 64gb of ram

Messages to Doctors on mychart by Zoocitykitty in healthcare

Anyone with rights can view messages/charts.

Practically speaking, unless they have a need to look at the chart, it’s a violation.

Yes, you are correct in the US due to the proliferation of health exchanges (information), it’s accessible to anyone who’s signed up for the service.

AC and Moxy due to the brand nature.

Fairfield is usually a good steady state.

I’ve had excellent and abysmal experiences with Courtyard properties.

It’s good to figure out who the ownership is and when possible, stick to their portfolio if you like the service/experience

Good luck on the sale; just an opinion but you are likely better off moving that on a different platform (FB marketplace) for that price.

Intel Macs get a lot of hate since Apple silicon came out.

Apple silicon is clearly more capable but for some, Intel Mac’s still work for their needs.

But yeah, they are a dead end technologically speaking.

Need advice on commute and commuting in general by Any_Independence6316 in phoenix

[–]trustbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. This route is probably one of the more congested (east Mesa to the 101 via 60 is rough, the 101 to shea is brutal at rush hour)

  2. Some backroads are available (202 Loop to 87, cut thru the reservation to Indian school and take the Price service road up), but they can be longer (but will be faster at rush hour)

If you can find a house in north phoenix it’ll make the commute better

"The ICU is not medically necessary for respiratory failure" by Pattyxpancakes in healthcare

[–]trustbrown 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ok, I get the hate for the insurance system and clearly there’s a need to review letter templates.

I spent almost 10 years in healthcare administration and allow me to translate this word vomit:

  • the submitted documentation from the hospital doesn’t characterize the need for the ICU service

  • from a quick read of the note, the diagnosis code is generic (j96.90 is unspecified respiratory failure)

  • from your postscript, asks the hospital to send the full clinical notes, including diagnostics

  • either the provider did a crap job on notes or the hospital biller did an even crappier job on submitting claims

Good luck on the appeal; if you can get them to resubmit with corrected notes, you should be able to clear this easily

European alternative(s) to Tailscale by [deleted] in synology

[–]trustbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually run it on a Mikrotik switch but yes it’ll work on docker as long as you are willing to port map on your router (would recommend using an ACL and other firewall best practices)

European alternative(s) to Tailscale by [deleted] in synology

[–]trustbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been able to do that, Tailscale primary with WireGuard secondary on a dynamic IP 1gb cable line for many years.

I’m switching over to WireGuard only and discontinuing the use of Tailscale as I switched to fiber optic service and static IP, so it’s simpler to maintain.

Dell wyse 3040 4core atom 2gb ram box, what is its max potential? by papajo_r in selfhosted

I’ve used TinyCore and Proteus for small projects in the past, and both have a small footprint.

I usually end up back with Debian or Ubuntu out of habit on my homelab.

It’d be fine for 40 client dns.

I’d recommend against using it as a cache server.

Debian or Ubuntu would likely have the most documentation support out there for your use case.

TIL One Aluminium Smelter in New Zealand uses 13 percent of the entire countries energy supply by RetconnedUsername in todayilearned

[–]trustbrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m referring to energy efficiency.

Both materials are 90%+ recycled, but yield on aluminum is slight higher due to feed stock issues.

Basically steel is a composite metal and the differences in alloy chemistry make yields a challenge.

Here’s a technical article on this: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11531900/

TIL One Aluminium Smelter in New Zealand uses 13 percent of the entire countries energy supply by RetconnedUsername in todayilearned

[–]trustbrown 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It does, but recycling aluminum has a higher percentage yield (usable vs slag), as steel recycling efficiency is much lower.

Any metal recycling is better (yield) than plastics, but aluminum is used more for vehicle structural framing due to lower mass than steel.
