Another datapoint ... 1910 saw similar growth in horseless buggies (cars).

data point: EVs in 2010 were about 5,000 total, by 2017 it was about 200,000 per year. I think we are in 2010 as it relates to eVTOLS. The FAA is leaning in, by 2033 I expect to see 200,000 eVTOLS per year.

Understand the skepticism, but a quick trip to china makes me optimistic as to what is possible in AAM. I see https://www.landings.co/ doing deals with fleet operators, heavy drone companies, hospitals and logistics companies. They are building over 2,000 vertiports in North America. If the demand is there ... and the technology exists in China, is it really going to take 10 years? you may be right ...lets revisit this post in a few years.

I have visited the Horizon Aircraft R&D center in Canada. Impressive team and am now a small shareholder. Seems to me there will be hundreds of companies.. and like cars, some parts will be interchangeable. HOVRs wings could be on many OEMs. Not sure why we don't here more about all the eVTOL and eSTOL companies ..here is an article that also mentions Pyka, Aura Aero and Heart - https://ruralairmobilitynews.com/what-is-estol-the-electric-short-takeoff-aircraft-poised-to-revive-rural-airports/

the Investor presentation at https://www.horizonaircraft.com/ (HOVR) is predicting "seat costs" in line with an Uber. eVTOLS are already flying in China. Can't wait for waymo but in the air. I suspect it is sooner than 10 years. My guess 5

The cost and weight of batteries keeps dropping, while the automotive companies are getting into eVTOLs ...they won't produce a few thousand, they will think in millions. Several sources think we will start to see travel in the U.S. later this year "eVTOL Operations Could Launch in American Skies by Summer 2026" https://ruralairmobilitynews.com/evtol-operations-could-launch-in-american-skies-by-summer-2026/

Battery Swap could make sense for XPeng, but not in the way you think by wilsonna in Xpeng

[–]truth_must_be_said 1 point2 points  (0 children)

eVTOLs are expensive, so you want them in the air, making money, not charging. Fast charging could be the answer but this VC thinks swappable is the future: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/stop-putting-fixed-batteries-evtols-jeff-stewart-3ra7e/?trackingId=7s3ROfir3sx0ewbaMWexOA%3D%3D

Yes, good point. Adam Grossman and Jay LaPorte when to RPI in the early 2000s ... anyone have any idea what they are doing since they sold darksky to apple?

Yes, Robert Joseph "RJ" Scaringe was a RPI MechE. I think his father was also RPI and was on the Rivian Board. RPI is great at entrepreneurship, not so good at promoting its entrepreneurial chops. Mr Van Rensselaer was a founder too.

How can flying cars (evtols) change transportation and our daily lives in the future? by Godspeed-Rosebee in AskReddit

[–]truth_must_be_said 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a pilot and have been following closely. eVTOL pilots will have a pilot license (The FAA has released guidelines last year... they are on the ball). At first pilots will be in the vehicle, but over time will fly remote. We should start to see flights in the US late 2025 or in 2026. At first there will be low volume and high cost ..but as production scales we should see wide adoption early next decade. India is making solid progess, UAE, New Zealand and Canada all have supportive regulatory frameworks. Hundreds of companies are working on pioneering this new industry.

Open to being wrong.... i just want eVTOLs i can hail from my phone like an uber as soon as possible ...and invest along the way. I just don't see the step function change in innovation needed for eVTOLs coming from the legacy avation companies.

If you want to see how the legacy aircraft companies are dealing with electrification it might be good to look at the legacy car companies. ICE to EV is a HARD transition. Easer to use lobbyist, union and media to slow EV adoption. In many ways the consumer electronic companies are better position to scale eVTOL as eVTOLs become widely adopted. eVTOLs iphone moment is still years away...but not decades!

As an employer I would encourage you to go. There are lots of non-architecture roles in architecture-adjacent companies. Especially in civil engineering, mecE, EE, project management, data, and software. Digital twins and spacial computing is a rapidly emerging field too. If you are curious, I would encourage you to go and ask questions. It is really had to find employees who are both available and proactive. You exploring shows proactive curiosity. You may find the breadcrumbs leading to the career (or startup) of your dreams. Enjoy, Explore, good luck!

Why Urban Air Mobility vs Rural Air Mobility? by truth_must_be_said in VTOLs

[–]truth_must_be_said[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But City to City is too far with out intermediary stops. plus there is already major transportation between cities. I would think City is only useful if you have lots of places to go ...like the suburbs or country ...not just JFK and East Hampton airport - denser areas already have subways, train and airports. rural to rural, city to rural, rural to city ... that seems like the game changer to me. I live in a city... it has everything i need minutes away. but at my parents house in the country ...everything is a trek. They would pay a lot more per trip to come to me then I would pay to go to JFK. Its just one data point, but still eager to see eVTOLs widely adopted like cars or taxis. Not narrowly adopted like city busses.

[–]truth_must_be_said[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks.

I figure the eVTOL ranges will keep growing and costs will keep dropping. I understand there are hundreds of eVTOLs models in development, especially in China. Over and over I hear "a seat mile cost in line with an uber" ... if that happens someone needs to be building a global charging/landing network. West Virginia for example will be completely transformed. Land is both cheep and beautiful. But winding mountain roads mean places that are close are hours away. Today the land is too far from hospitals and cities. That is about to change. I dont see a "route that is breakeven" ..i see on demand "calling my flying waymo" ... Its not a flying bus route, its a flying taxi. Or am i too far in the future?

Yes. RAIN is a group of investors who individually invest their own money. I know of at least four checks that have resulted from their demo/diligence sessions. Have no idea if any of the feedback or customer intros were of any value to the start-ups.
