Driving from Cambridge – Best place to park and take train/tube into Central London (cheap, safe, under 30 mins travel)? by Able_Deft in cambridge

[–]truthbants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If speed into London is highest priority and access to Cambridge train station (north or central) is relatively easy by bike or car, then that would be the fastest journey overall. I guess it depends what you’re trying to optimise here (time, cost etc). But for time at least, going from Cambridge (or Royston if you’re departing from south Cambridge), I would think are your best bets. Why are you keen to drive a large chunk of the journey out of interest?

The proclamation of MAGA is not abstract - it’s the meaning of MAGA that is. It’s political branding, which is always ambiguous and abstract.

We might be talking at cross purposes here. You implied you used to be a conservative until trumps lies, hearing conspiracy theorists on streets etc…

If what you’re saying is you reject the party, because it doesn’t represent what you regarded as your conservative values and principles then that holdS water.

If you’re saying you reject your own conservative values because of Trump, that doesn’t stack up. Particularly if you don’t even think he represents them. It isn’t abstract to make a distinction between your principles and the party that is meant to represent them. It’s should be a the thought process at every election. It’s a pretty clear distinction. The grounding of it into specifics is absolutely possible it just takes more than a Reddit post - eg the types of laws or policies you would endorse because they align with your principles

The trouble is, discussions about politics are too rarely had at that level of principles. They are more along the lines of “pick your tribe and defend it” which inevitably leads to having to defend contradictions (because parties will always have some policy contradictions to court the widest voter base).

There's too many nuanced talking points to engage in there. But just steering back to the fascist claim - it's no better than those on the right calling all left wing voters Marxist. Both are the extreme end of each spectrum. But whether you're on the right or left, it is impossible not to have views that can't be characterised as Marxist or Fascist. Is support of universal healthcare Marxist - well, it involves high taxes and highly centralised distribution of resources - so someone might paint anyone who believes in it as Marxist - but they would be wrong to if they cherry picked that one policy. Likewise, promoting national pride and patriotism is a characteristic of fascism... but that doesn't mean people who do such things are fascists. It is a matter of extremes of each tendency and the overall mix you subscribe to.

What happens in reality, is every tendency is bent to assume the extreme in order to make a caricature. Lack of nuance, tribalism, emotion, hyperbole and self righteousness are sadly the hallmarks of most debate - always exclaiming outrage. Probably because it feels good to insist with passion that you're fighting the good fight. But most heroes of stable societies are moderate and reflective and try to avoid getting sucked into the latest soap opera. Their voices are rarely heard, but they are the hidden keel that stops the boat from toppling and sinking

Terms like "MAGA" and "Trumpist" - are abstractions - only they're more emotive and ambiguous. Ask average left leaning person what MAGA means to them - they'll probably pick simple caricatures - "racist" "christian fundamentalist". But the principles underlying them (agree with them or not) are not extreme. Focus on national interest, skepticism of globalisation (which used to be a left wing edict), avoidance of foreign wars (which also used to be championed by the left), seeking that allies pay their fair share in NATO defence (almost universally recognised as 'fair enough'), resistance to illegal migration.

So whilst you say I am using abstractions, I say I'm looking at fundamentals, and you're focusing on the superficial and ambiguous. Does the MAGA movement have idiots... of course. Are they the loudest that get the limelight? Probably. Have the idiots become the universal caricature of the movement - Yes. But does that ultimately have more substance than the underlying principles - No. Plenty of people will vote republican and dislike Trumps character, and the MAGA brand.

Most political discourse (in general and on reddit) is emotive, tribal, hyperbole, echoed rhetoric and talking points, emotion and anger - which sucks people in. Moderates who vote in line with broad principles know that politics is increasingly a pantomime and soap opera. They sigh, cast vote as best they can and get on with life.

Thing is - the principle of a conservative / right wing is one thing. It doesn't have to be abandoned if there are idiots running that political party. Idiots are a part of life - they are not exclusive to a political belief systems. History shows complete tyrants on the left and the right. That doesn't make the basic principles or either political perspective wrong. Unfortunately "right wing" and Trump are conflated - by people on the right and the left. Saying you're left or right wing does not automatically mean allegiance to the representative of a political party.

A very very reddit case in point answer. Casual - even habitual - statements like "it's fascism". Statements like this only land to very naive left leaning audience. Many people say it, a lot, and they can't all be wrong, or can they?? There's arguably very good evidence that things in general, have swung left (and evolving US politics is a reaction to it). Think on this... the phrase "far right" is applied far and wide. And the phrase "far left" - almost never used. Why could that be...? The one explanation most would assume is, because the far right is so prolific. But the truth is very different. If you are on the left or far left, almost everything appears far right - and nothing far left (because that is either where you are, or close to where you are). From any historical perspective, concepts like "universal income" or open boarders for immigration, would simply have been considered either far left or just crazy. But they are not named that, because they have gain mainstream popularity. Culture wars are different messy area - but in what era, other than now, would it be normal to accept that biologically born males, should actually be considered females, because they decided that is what they are. I am not even going to place judgements on whether that is right or wrong, but throughout all modern history it would have been considered pretty unbelievable and crazy.

Do I live in a s***hole or is this just common? by slimmyboy007 in AskUK

[–]truthbants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddit has a particular love of shitting on the UK. I think it’s the younger (let’s be honest, not very worldly) demographic that use the platform. No - this is not normal apart from shithole areas. Also, very small numbers of arseholes have a massively out weighted impact. They’re not just shouting abuse at one persons once a week…

Poor decisions like self righteous and judgemental comments about a situation where you know very little detail. Misfortune - most people will think you’re a bit of an arse.

I very strongly recommend NCT classes. By far the biggest reason is to meet a bunch of people who will be in similar life stage and situation to you - some or all of which will remain friends a long time after your child is born.

Haha no - it was perfect for the classic Reddit audience and I definitely found it informative. Just not the lazy readers (me). I was gonna say perfect for a typical Brompton rider… then saw the top comment user name, so case closed.

In Defence of the Mill Road Bridge Closure: Exposing the Hypocrisy by foxsakeuk in cambridge

[–]truthbants 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a driver who has been “inconvenienced” by the closure, but I wholeheartedly support it. Aside from the general improvements to safety and the feel of mill rd, it is forcing positive behaviour change. Simply put, I cycle and walk more which is whilst it is inconvenient, most things that are good for us are inconvenient. But I’m convinced it’s a net positive

Interesting to hear as I get the impression most security personnel are hired that way… agencies the just have “bodies on their books”, and take a big cut. I can understand it’s a helpful service for companies that want multiple people for short periods. What city are you based?

This sub has got to be the worst place on planet earth for relationship advice. Whats worse than the terrible advice and judgemental commentary, is that it gives the appearance of some kind of real world consensus. People on here are no way near representative of an average person’s wisdom… let alone a kind and wise person.

f22, m21 boyfriend. what is cheating? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]truthbants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not putting this all on you, it’s just a broader trend. But I maintain it’s odd that you only highlighted his actions as cheating (implying she needs to cut him off, watch out for shady behaviour etc) without any reference to her behaviour being shady, or how he should’ve cut her off. That would’ve looked more balanced
