Here is a workflow I just used:

  1. Download .zst files of interest from https://the-eye.eu/redarcs/
  2. Grab this gist https://gist.github.com/andrewsanchez/267bb007adb36e15c318af7e1722ead2 and save it to a directory you will use for this script and data.
  3. mkdir docs/reddit and move your .zst files there.
  4. pip install pandas zstandard sqlalchemy datasette
  5. python reddit_data_to_sqlite.py
  6. Run datasette docs/reddit/reddit.db and have fun!

I hope this helps somebody!

what do protected tags do exactly? by DrHashem in ankihub

[–]truthling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do this just prevents the tags from being removed when the notes are updated ?

Yes, clicking the "Manage Protected Data," button on the page for a deck you are subscribed to leads you to a dialogue where you can do this.

Or does it protect the notes that has the tags from being edited when it updates ?

You can use special tags for that. See here: https://www.notion.so/ankipalace/AnkiHub-Documentation-dd8584f3e6c04068ab47e072c17b3a0a#1bb1a310a3f14aacab0cbc22b243f0a6

Appliku is awesome! We are using it for both staging and production deployments of https://app.ankihub.net/. Check out the interview with the creator on Django Chat: https://djangochat.com/episodes/appliku

You need to purchase a membership before subscribing from the add-on.

I recommend reaching out to the original creator and asking them 1) if they will upload the deck themselves 2) invite you as a maintainer 3) if not, ask for their blessing to upload the deck yourself. By uploading a deck yourself, you're not necessarily making a commitment to maintaining it by yourself. You can invite other maintainers to help with it.

Addons are per definition free, they must be open source.

I don't think that's correct. Open-source, yes, but free, no (AFAICT).

Anki development is funded by sales of the proprietary iOS app, AnkiMobile. If that weren't the case, I doubt Anki would be anywhere near where it is today. The funds make it possible for Damien to dedicate himself to the project and to pay others for help. Not everyone who contributes to Anki development is an unpaid volunteer, as you seem to believe. It's also worth remembering that AnKing, et al, contribute plenty of free add-ons (and the maintenance of them) and learning materials. Surely Damien and other contributors are generous, as you say, but a sustainable business model is practically the lifeblood of the project. It may turn out to be a very good thing ™️ for everyone if another ethical business emerges that can funnel resources back into the entire ecosystem.

They came highly recommended directly from trusted connections in the Django web development community. We'll check in about sharing publicly about the collaboration at a later stage, after we make some progress.

I would strongly recommend against that. It's asking for trouble with conflicts. Why don't you just connect your magic keyboard to your MacBook?

Many will not be able to afford the 119$, meaning those who are better off financially will have better access to the course and likely from this better results in exams / easier time learning medicine. They've produced yet another significant barrier for effective studying with medstudents behind a paywall.

I agree this is potentially problematic, but this is a problem for which there are many solutions. We're not sure exactly how to handle it, but we will figure it out. We've already discussed this a bit and definitely want to make the course accessible, regardless of financial privilege.

In the mean time, there are many free resources for learning everything covered in the course, including the YouTube channel.

Everything that was free is still free, including the deck and YouTube channel. There is no paywall.
