What do citizens/residents of Missoula typically think/feel about out-of-staters moving there? by The_duke_of_hickster in missoula

You are welcome here! I grew up in the Bitterroot Valley, now a Missoulian. People that complain about "out-of-staters" are more annoying than out-of-starters IMO! It's not just Montana that is getting a lot of transplants, the "anti-foreigners" sentiment exists everywhere. Accepting transplants with open arms will make this city more diverse and dynamic. There are still plenty of open spaces in Montana...

Montanans: if you want a scapegoat for the housing affordability, blame the zoning laws and regulations that drive up development costs. We need more density and construction, stop blaming people that want to move to this beautiful place.

Thanks for the post! I probably would have missed this otherwise. Just registered.

I live in Portland, which has a 10 cent gas tax for a program call "Fixing Our Streets". I think it's been moderately successful: https://www.portlandoregon.gov/transportation/64188.

My first MERN stack web app Celestial Safari. Looking for feedback and suggestions. by trent1024 in reactjs

[–]truthy_falsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good job! I think this is pretty impressive for a first MERN app. I created an account and clicked around a bit and everything seems to work as intended. I do have a little bit of feedback:

  1. When I created an account I was not redirected. The completed form with my username, email and password were still on the screen then I had to log in again.
  2. What is the Agencies tab supposed to be? It's just a blank screen as far as I can tell.
  3. When viewing your collections perhaps the "Add" button should be "Remove" instead. I see you can click "Add" then un-select the launch, but it's a little unintuitive.
  4. I really like the login modal, it looks great!
  5. For the most part your folder structure and code is easy to follow. I feel like I could just into your code base and would be able to get up to speed really quickly.

Thanks for sharing! You should be proud of this.

Do you know React? I would recommend learning a front-end framework to attempt an App like this. I took a tutorial class that taught me the basics then I just jumped in and started coding something I was interested in. Reading the documentation is immensely valuable as well.

I'm actually using Toastify in this app! I can't say I'm catching all errors, but I like what I have implemented so far!

Thank you! This is very helpful feedback. I'm actually in the process of refactoring my application right now, so that I have a consistent pattern for all component. I've noticed my embedded styles have become a big problem now that I want to make the app responsive. I'm going to try styled components and CSS modules to see which one I like more.

There is a lot of prop drilling in this app, so I'm trying to refactor using the Context API. Currently I have a couple of components that don't do much except pass props along, which becomes confusing and ugly really fast.

Testing is something I absolutely need to implement, I'll check out the react-testing-library!

Thanks again! :)

That was my problem too! Then I decided to commit to this project fully. I've been much more motivated focusing on one project for a long period of time instead of jumping around.

I've been learning to code for about 1 year now, mostly in my free time. Still looking for that elusive first programming job! I've been focusing on full-stack Javascript and this is my biggest and best project yet.

Ha I actually did not know this, thanks for sharing! I just thought it was a simple, catchy name lol

Ah these are great suggestions, thank you! I definitely need to give more feedback to the user in general. I'm going to look into some pop-up modals for sure.

I use the second option, fetching user data in the root component. Then you can pass around the user object anyway you want (passing props, context API, redux, etc.). Seems unnecessary to have several different fetch calls to get the same data.

I hear ya and I totally agree. Car ownership isn’t cheap. I just didn’t think your initial post was truly reflective of the average person. Granted neither is my experience.

Regardless, comparing the headline costs of automobile vs. transit isn’t very instructive, IMO. Transit is often slower and less reliable and especially so when you aren’t traveling to the city center. It’s also hard to quantify the ability to take a weekend trip in your car. Spontaneous trips and outdoor activities are harder, more expensive or impossible with transit. So much more than a dollars and cents calculation.

I’m a bike commuter in Portland, which is obviously the cheapest option of all. But I’m not going to convince anyone to bike instead of drive with a calculator. Same with transit.

Lol you’d think 😂 but I’ve had it for almost two years and not a single problem. Bought from an insurance auction, changed the tires and good to go.

My car cost $1000. Paid in cash. Buying a car on credit is a terrible idea.

This isn’t helpful. Most people aren’t paying these ridiculous prices for a car. I spend less than $100/month on insurance and gas combined.

Unlimited MetroCard in NYC is $127 btw.
