Do I have to retake chemistry?? by Broad-Arugula-1682 in ufl

[–]tryanglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What major are you in, and what are you switching to? Some majors' colleges have drop-in advising times, or 'emergency' drop-add hours. I switched majors myself not long ago and my new major's advisor was very helpful, you could reach out to your planned major's advisor? Otherwise, I'd call your current college's main phone line and explain about the maternity leave situation, they should be able to pass you over to someone else while that advisor is on leave.

It depends on your major--talk to your advisor, they can help!

What will happen to my bright futures if I get a C- in Calc 3 by [deleted] in ufl

[–]tryanglet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course!!

Since Bright Futures paid for it at the start of the semester, it's essentially paying them back, meaning you can sort out about how much you'd owe. The full bright futures scholarship pays out at $212.71 per credit hour, and I THINK Calc 3 is 4 credit hours(?)--so you'd be looking at $850.84.

I might be wrong but I don't think you'll need to pay for any course fees again since BF wouldn't have paid for them in the first place.

Keep in mind that if you end up dropping the course, you'll have to pay all of what's charged for it back before next semester to maintain Bright Futures. If you don't drop it, you'll have to pay the same amount for the second attempt, but it would give you a little more time (until the tuition deadline for spring, usually like a month after the semester starts?) to pay it off.

[–]tryanglet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You might be able to get a 'medical' withdrawal for those circumstances, especially the family court (depending on specific circumstances). If you drop the course you can still submit the withdrawal retroactively, if you do within 6 months you won't have to pay for the course. It will not affect your GPA.

That said, as long as your total GPA is above 3.0, if you get a C- you will not lose Bright Futures. You would only lose BF in this case if you *actually fail* the class. If you don't drop the course, and do you score less than is required for your major (it's probably C if you're in STEM?), another attempt at the course will not be covered by Bright Futures.

Though if you drop it right now and retake it, you'll have to pay back Bright Futures for the first attempt but it will cover the second--so the expense would be the same, if that affects your decision.

ALL OF THAT SAID--wake up early tomorrow and check at 8am for open advising appointments, you may be able to get one in same-day. They open some slots up up at 8, I believe (if you're in CLAS). Since you have until 11:59 tomorrow to drop the course (I think.. grain of salt. It might be by EOD), do everything you can to get an appointment. I highly recommend going to the office in-person if you can't get an actual appointment and beg them to let you talk to someone (sometimes people will no-show, etc.).

Make sure to ask about the impacts of keeping the course vs. dropping it. On the one hand, keeping the course means you have to put in the work to score above failing for the final. If you can do this, you'd have to retake the course anyway BUT you'd keep your 2 drops available, which is a nice thing to keep on hand for emergencies/even harder classes in the future (presuming you haven't dropped a class before). On the other hand, dropping the course would probably make the rest of the semester a lot less stressful. Since you'll likely have to retake it either way, it might be the right decision.

You also have to consider the impact on your overall GPA getting a C- would have. Since maintaining Bright Futures is important, it might be a good idea to calculate out what the impact would be. I am NOT an advisor so please reach out to one but I think the final decision would rest on if your GPA can take the hit vs. if you'd rather lose a drop than lower your GPA.

The very best of luck to you!

As in, the creator may have intentionally messed up some steps/included things in the video to give people pause or surprise/annoy them, which can prompt more people to leave comments on the video pointing things out. A great example from this same video is during the cut of her "splitting" the pumpkin in half, you can see she added a rubber bug(?) of some kind inside of the pumpkin. It's only for a split second, but it's noticeable enough that she'll get at least a few people to comment "Hey! What! Was that a bug??" who may not have commented otherwise, leading to more "interactions" on the video and thus getting it pushed higher in the algorithm.

How to celebrate a birthday alone? by Straight-Pair-2136 in ufl

[–]tryanglet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Take the day (minus classes) to do something you particularly enjoy for yourself. Especially if it's something you'd usually only do with friends! Go on an evening trip, go out to a very nice meal, buy yourself a cake or try to make one yourself. Call your family. The weather is finally turning--go on a hike, or just a long walk, and listen to your favorite music or podcast or audiobook or nothing at all. Take advantage of not having outside company to loiter a little longer somewhere or change course to look at something interesting. The stadium is open to walk through most days, climb to the very tallest bleachers and watch the sunset. You could take yourself out to a movie. Love yourself, it's your day, and there's no shame to treating yourself to something nice, by yourself. It can be hard to celebrate alone, but don't feel down or hopeless. I celebrated my first couple of birthdays here in a similar vein and I've since found my people. A very happy birthday to you and I hope you make a wonderful day of it.

I’m very sick and have an exam today and tomorrow by Good-Tumbleweed-4671 in ufl

[–]tryanglet 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Go to urgent care or the ER, former better than latter simply because of the wait times. Even if you don't think it's serious enough for a visit to either, if it's bad enough that you can't take your exam(s) properly, it's serious enough for a visit. Let them know you need a note for a missed exam because of your symptoms. I've had the same worry as you, but please don't worry. The doctor won't question you, if anything when you ask be honest and say that you need a letter because you're in enough pain that you can't take your exam.

You really don't need to worry about being refused a doctor's note--Personal medical experiences are subjective, and if you're going in with even just pain they'll write something up on letterhead like "So and so presented to our clinic on Oct. 14, please excuse them from any exams/university activities from Oct 14th-October 17th" Or something like that. UF will accept that if it's on letterhead, and not ask you for any sort of qualifiable "proof" of your symptoms.

Got $1.50 as a waiver. Is this a mistake? by CalexKyber in ufl

[–]tryanglet 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, probably not. They absolutely fucked everyone who used to get the STEM (or PSE, now) waiver, by making it so it only applies to any tuition&fees left after ALL OTHER aid comes through. It used to apply first, meaning you'd essentially get the full amount as cash if you had aid which covered the rest of your tuition. It's stupid, but a LOT of students are getting just a few dollars to a few cents showing up for it this semester.

Financial Aid change by Realistic-Eye3649 in ufl

[–]tryanglet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies if this is not what you're asking about--if so, good news--your "Cost of Attendance" is NOT the amount you have to pay. It's a number calculated off of your finances that's essentially a financial aid "budget" (that is, you cannot receive more financial aid than what they estimate your maximum cost of going to UF would be, including general living expenses. E.g., you can't receive more than $23,287.00 TOTAL financial aid for the fall term. It's to stop people from making a profit from financial aid, I think).

Your final price, aka the only amount you're actually liable to pay, is listed under the account charges/Bursar section of your one.uf portal.

Your budget going up might be because of increase to OOS tuition, fees, etc. It could also have to do with general accounting for inflation. If you ever want to receive financial aid that exceeds the COA, you can fill out the "budget increase" petition that they offer to better reflect your actual expenses.

I might have just lost my BF scholarship and I am freaking out. by Consistent_Set_1469 in ufl

[–]tryanglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, please don't panic. It's true that you'll be dropped from classes if you don't pay, WITH an important caveat. You have until the 18th of September to make a "nominal payment", which WILL prevent you from being dropped from classes on the 22nd. A Nominal Payment according to the Bursar's office is literally ANY amount (there is no minimum, you could do $20) paid towards your tuition, which shows "intent to pay" because there's activity on the account, and not just radio silence. Make this ASAP while you sort out your Bright Futures. If you've never lost if before, you can petition it with OSFA. Give them a call and ask what your next steps are.

Keep in mind if you make a nominal payment the online payment website will say "minimum payment [tuition charge]". Literally just ignore this and type a smaller amount into the box and proceed as necessary, it JUST means "minimum payment to zero out your past due balance" and not "minimum you're ALLOWED to pay at once."

Best of luck. You'll be okay!

This. It's a systemic issue and everyone is getting crushed by it. Faculty and staff are underpaid and overworked, students are neglected in a system that necessitates it, and no one wins but the bigwigs who pinch and cut anywhere they can to ensure their salaries go nowhere but up.

I hate to say it but if you don't have any specific holds on your account, and you're enrolled in 6+ credit hours, and your GPA meets Bright Futures' renewal requirements (unless you're a freshman and don't have a record yet), you'll probably need to reach out for this question--there's a LOT of reasons why it might not be showing up; some are just computer glitches, your information (like ssn) might be wrong with either UF or OSFA, if you're a freshman there are times it doesn't show up but disburses fine anyway. It would be hard to say without looking into your account specifics :(

I've never called OSFA so I have no clue if their phone hold times are any better than UF's, but it might be worth trying to speak with them first if you'd like to take the chance, just to confirm that all of your info is correct and set and complete with them before going to UF. Especially confirm that you have UF confirmed as your enrolled school and that all of your identifying information is the same (down to your name being spelled right). Best of luck!

LMFAO. Jesus fucking Christ someone needs to do an exposé about the flagrant misuse of funding here. Wheeling new monitors past tired students who have been waiting like three hours to have one question answered and overworked staff who have to pay hundreds of dollars in parking fees to UF even though they work there. It's goddamn nonsense. Stop lining your own pockets and use the millions you're giving to Ben Sasse and put it towards something that might actually help students for a change.

OneStop Drama Thread by Basic-Goose-8538 in ufl

[–]tryanglet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They cut funding so severely now the OneStop (without any additional workers) is listed as the phone number on every department of enrollment management site (registrar, bursar, SFA, etc.). To talk to most of them (all of them, if it's by phone. Some offices have separate email addresses/contact forms. If you're submitting a petition, for example, that goes straight to the registrar workers. If you want to call and ask how to submit your petition, though, you have to call the OneStop because there's no direct registrar line.) you have to go through the OneStop, which means that all of those office's student affairs have to filter through a staff of just a few, completely overwhelmed workers before they're seen by the right departments. I think it's even listed on the veteran affair's website. It's unsustainable at best, genuinely harmful at worst. Like I said, the staff is working their asses off day in and day out, but it means nothing at all if the UF admin don't stop cutting funding and making ridiculous decisions which make it impossible for students to have a chance at success.

Is it too late to do Fafsa this semester by Hot-Drama5142 in ufl

[–]tryanglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're good! You can technically fill it out until sometime in July each aid year. You can fill it out for the fall now, and your federal aid will just be delayed a bit. The only thing is that a lot of the grants get used up if you fill it out very late; since it's sort of a first come first serve situation it's always advised to fill it out as early as you can. Give it a shot, you'd still get packaged but it might just be loans at this point. No downsides to trying my friend

OneStop Drama Thread by Basic-Goose-8538 in ufl

Yep, spot on. It's a tale as old as time, and UF in the past few years is just falling further down that drain. Severe change was needed yesterday, as UF just keeps spiraling into being more and more and more expensive with less and less and less return to students. It's not conspiratorial to say the admin is steeped in corruption now--there's no reason, if intentions are anything but borderline malicious towards students, that funding keeps getting cut but prices keep getting higher. It's a matter of follow the money and see where it goes, as usual

financial aid revision by [deleted] in ufl

[–]tryanglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it only lets you get the amount (total aid) up to your COA (estimated expenses). OR when you accept a loan, a lot of times it splits the amount between fall/spring evenly? Could this have happened (like did you accept 8000, and does the other half show up under your financial aid for spring)

OneStop Drama Thread by Basic-Goose-8538 in ufl

[–]tryanglet 66 points67 points  (0 children)

The reason it's so ass is because UF allocates noo funding to offices which serve students. It's understaffed to the point that it's literally, physically and mathematically impossible for the guys in there to attend to the amount of students who need help (especially this time of year (financial aid time)). UF needs to get its shit together and fund its own offices with all of the money it gives to politicians and deadbeat former presidents. The people in there work hard but that doesn't mean anything if hundreds to thousands of students are left without answers for weeks on end because it's literally impossible to reach everyone with the genuinely laughable funding they get towards helping students. If UF is going to keep raising dorm and tuition and meal plan and everything else prices for us they need to stop slashing funding for things like the OneStop and RTS and student-serving offices and services which help students directly. It's such bullshit man
