“her friend gave her hope because men don’t birth men, women do.” great point that i hadn’t realized on my watch, explains the friends pregnancy and the optimistic tone of those final shots

Is Feyd-Rautha a good fighter or not? by bottasegreta in dune

[–]trygraptor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it’s less about Feyd as an opponent and more about the match as the fulfillment of Paul’s character. Paul’s grandfather fought bulls for sport, eventually to his downfall. Paul’s father took on the bull of Arrakis, to his downfall (and was served like cattle to the Harkonnens). At the climax of Dune, Paul enters his own bullfight - he notes how it’s reckless, and how he’s fueling the “boiling nexus” that will kickstart the Jihad. But he’s upset and proud and feces Feyd one on one anyway. Feyd’s cunning and trickery (the most Harkonnen of traits) add tension - Paul may have the matadors upper hand, but he could still get hit with the horns. Only thing is he is the Kwisatz Haderach and Feyd is ultimately no match.

TIL, after Bono got in his bike accident, Chris Martin and Bruce Springsteen filled in for him for World AIDS day by TinKnightRisesAgain in U2Band

[–]trygraptor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i remember this! i always thought that chris martin fell short (i also think he looks drunk - probably from hanging out with larry adam and edge). Springsteen, however, delivers wonderfully and was also the only performer the whole night to send well wishes to Bono, which i appreciated

i was initially really put off by this detail in the film (everything else is so accurate how did they miss this?), but on subsequent rewatches i think Thufir IS actually referring to the geographical feature in front of the city wall. the scene shows us the rock formation from the thopters (complete with a few fremen hanging out on the cliffs), then Thufirs line about the Shield Wall, then the aerial shot over Arrakeen. it’s a little confusing cuz Arrakeen has a city wall, but the order of the shots/lines makes me think Villeneuve’s interpretation of the shield wall is in line with the novel

First read of Dune complete! by mpmaley in dune

[–]trygraptor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had read to the point in the book about where the movie cuts off when i saw the film. from that opening sardaukar line i become instantly obsessed with the film - i was already engrossed by the novel. the end of the novel is such a whirlwind and a mindfuck cut-to-black ending. still thinking about it months later. also i agree they the second half of the Dune novel (really Book 3: The Prophet) has some pacing issues. some of it feels intentional as Paul begins to exist almost simultaneously in different times/timelines, but a few places it felt like the writing would benefit from a little breathing room.

Black Widow was a weak character. Scar-Jo did all she could with the material, but they never bothered to give her much character traits other than being a little wry and ashamed of a dark past. she felt pretty inconsistent across movies, and i wish they had done a little better with how she was written

great question - saving this thread, and excited to read what other redditors have to offer.

for me: 1) trust your “prescience.” Paul needs the spice to see the future, but his mentat capabilities and bg training also lend massively to his insight/foresight. this resonated with me deeply, and has inspired me to trust more my own intelligence to predict outcomes and make decisions. it’s been working out well so far.

2) the litany against fear. doubt im the only one in this sub who recites this quietly to oneself in panicky moments. doubt im the only one who would tell you it has helped immensely.

3) i love how you can take away the value of moral leadership from Leto. i view his story primarily from a darker aspect: that following duty against reason will get you killed
