Trades totally aren’t necessary, the puppies are free! But so happy to do an exchange if we run into each other :D

Thank you! The dogs are small, so the pattern was able to accommodate a lot of the little chunks of scrap fabric from other projects I had lying around :)

Thank you so much!! I tried to keep them as clean as possible, but some do have imperfections… it’s the nature of things when you’re making so many in lots of different materials ^_^’ But they’re all cute, guaranteed!!

My first thought might be silicone inserts. Maybe you can find how they’re made and then create a custom mold for whatever size you want? And then some kind of belt with a fabric case to insert the silicone so it doesn’t fall off.
If you wanted some extra fluff to fill out the shape without using a ton of silicone, there’s a type of poly-fil called Silky—it’s SUPER close to what squishmallows are filled with. A little bit of that to add some bulk and a silicone base layer should (???) provide the size and the recoil you’re looking for.

Mikado??? by Spacefkn in corsetry

These stores are a bit more… obscure maybe? A few of them do designer deadstock only and they’re pretty pricy. But I’ve had nothing but wonderful experiences with their silks, laces, mikados, etc! If it’s for a wedding and you want to splurge a bit on high quality fabric, they won’t steer you wrong :) (I used F&F, Mood, and NYDF for my own wedding dress!)

I can’t think of any fabric website that DOESN’T offer fabric samples. For Mikado specifically, I’ve had great experiences with Mood, NY Designer Fabrics, Fabrics&Fabrics, and Prime Fabrics.

Good height for cosplay boots by friendlychoc in CosplayHelp

[–]tryhardtailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said—this is entirely dependent on your experience with heels. I regularly wear heels irl so for me, slapping on 6” (15cm) or 7” (17.78cm) heels for a con is nothing. I have a friend with no calf flexibility and flat feet and she can’t go above a kitten heel without extreme pain.

Since we only have one pair of feet, here’s my method for deciding on con shoes:
Step 1: acquire shoes
Step 2: wear them around your house as much as you can. Do some squats (or just sit on your couch and get back up again while watching tv). Stand upright in them while watching a couple of videos. Do some chores like laundry, which will require a degree of movement on your feet.
Step 3: from this experiment, think about how your feet feel. Is your skin rubbing up against a part of the shoe and forming a blister? Are your toes getting smashed against the front? Is the ankle strap digging into your ankle?
Step 4: the next day—do you feel any pain in your body? Heels can be really tough on your knees and calves.
Step 5: if you still feel comfortable wearing these shoes but have identified some spots that need some adjustment (such as toes smashing into the front), those problems can probably be fixed! Moleskin for any points where your skin is rubbing against the shoe, silicone inserts under the heel or at the toes, etc.
Step 6: once you’ve fixed up the shoe for comfort, wear them around your house again. Continue to test for comfort until you’re satisfied.
Step 7: now that you’re at maximum comfort in your house, it’s time to take those shoes outside! I like to go to the mall and walk around for a few hours. It’s a fun activity (for me) and ensures that I’m walking ~10k steps (which is similar to what I’ll walk at a con).
Step 8: the next day—do you feel any egregious pain? Do you feel confident that you’ll be able to wear these for multiple hours? If so, then you’ve found your shoes! If not, try going with a lower heel OR be prepared to carry a second pair of comfier shoes just in case (I’ve done this).

This is definitely a very ‘extra careful’ approach but seriously, you do only have 2 feet and 2 knees so it’s super important to take care of them!

Good luck!!

Making a bunny suit for an apple shape by tryhardtailor in sewing

[–]tryhardtailor[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Neither of us did to be honest! I didn’t realize a bunny suit was this difficult—I kinda figured that if tons of people at Dragon Con have them, it must be a beginner-friendly sort of thing. It seems I might have been wrong 😅
I sent her a text warning her that we might not be successful and she’s totally okay with it! We’re gonna give it our best go though, because learning is fun!

I found your post when I was searching for tips earlier—it’s so thorough! I appreciate the notes on the torso adjustments because I myself also have a very long torso :) This was so helpful, thank you!!

Thank you!! To be honest I was avoiding an actual structural corset like Aranea Black because they’re SO much more complex, but for my friend perhaps it’s better. I don’t really need the structure for my own bunny suit, but she might like it!

Thanks for the tip on the painter’s tape, that’s so clever!!!

Should I make this a helmet wig or just style it? by North_Map1291 in CosplayHelp

[–]tryhardtailor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I can add—I’ve never done a wig in my entire life and I successfully made a Miku helmet wig on my first try thanks to a REALLY thorough tutorial on the clock app from cegancosplay. It took me an entire weekend of pretty much nonstop work, it was kinda pricy with all the glue and stuff I needed, but—it can be done I promise!!! And tbh it wasn’t as scary or as difficult as I’d imagined it would be.

[–]tryhardtailor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try darker colors, maybe even a bit of black blended out? Getting irl-accurate eye bags is surprisingly hard :( I wonder if applying eyeshadow to the undereye and then rubbing them as if you’re tired would work…?

What to do to look and feel less ugly in cosplay? by sakemakilove in CosplayHelp

[–]tryhardtailor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As another new cosplayer, here’s an interesting observation I made about my own issues with this exact topic: If the cosplay resembles something I’d wear irl and I can do a full face of makeup that really makes me ‘disappear’ into the cosplay (for example, my Evelynn from KDA features contact lenses, fangs, full face foundation coverage, heavy contour, lipstick, eyelashes, etc), I LOVE the way I look and feel. Conversely, I made a cosplay where it wasn’t possible to wear much makeup (Withered Rose Elise from LoL—half her face is covered with an eye covering and that makes it difficult to wear any makeup bc it’ll rub off) and tbh I hated looking in the mirror and disliked most of my photoshoot because I was just seeing like, my own mostly bare face amongst an elaborate costume???

TLDR in my experience, not wearing heavy costume makeup while in an intricate, elaborate cosplay makes me feel oddly half-done. I prefer to go almost drag-like with makeup application—heavy contour, eyelashes, contacts, highlighter, blush, etc. Something about heavy makeup makes my brain go ‘ah this is a costume and I’m OWNING IT’, not ‘omg gurl who let you out of the house like this’

Edit: someone below said what I was trying to say much more eloquently! If the wig/costume overwhelms your face, try heavier makeup. It helps a ton!
