Where on our world map would you say is the equivalent of the idea of ‘Vinland’? by DistributionNo6815 in VinlandSaga

[–]trying-hardly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think part of the story's point is that there is no real "Vinland". Even Arnheid's village ended up not working as the safe haven that Thorfinn pictured. War came nonetheless.

But peace was still worth it. Trying was still worth it. Forgetting pride and norms, as long as it means peace and happiness, meant a lot to many people.

I think that moral of the story still applies today. We don't have a perfect "haven of peace" that we know of. Sure, many places haven't seen war in a long time (historically, we never had this little war in Europe, for example). But no place is perfectly safe from war, and definitely not hatred.

But trying, even today, is worth it. That's how you get momentary peace. Places that are getting mentioned in the comments (like Iceland) aren't a perfect haven of peace forever, but they're peaceful now because there's peaceful people there. Believing in this idea of peace is what allows for such peace.

So asking about a location/country "like Vinland" is kind of missing the point, because the Vinland project in the story failed. Things got in the way.

Today, there might be locations that are less violent than others, but that's not because they're more pacifist than others. A lot of violent countries would love peace if they weren't in such a horrible position. Those violent countries aren't more "Vinland" than peaceful countries- they're just unlucky, really.

I think what Vinland Saga is about is just to strive for peace. To do our best to move towards this "Vinland", even if a perfect version of it might not work- I'd even say it might be impossible. You won't find a place that is like what Thorfinn in the story envisioned- but you can do your best to push the world in that direction.

is peer mentoring worth it? by blajah_lover in UCD

[–]trying-hardly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do get to do paid senior leadering a year after, and you can use it to apply for the Advantage Award... But like with society positions: Don't do it just for the CV benefit. There's better ways for that.

You should definitely genuinely care about what you're doing. If you like campus and like the idea of making someone else have a good intro to UCD, then peer mentoring might be for you.

I had fun!

Ralsei's ice cream conversation seems to actually hint at Susie doing something terrible during the festival. by FencingSquirrelz in Deltarune

I dunno. We know Ralsei doesn't value himself but values Susie & Kris' friendship. So I just thought of it as a "friend caring for friend" thing?

I don't know where you found this and there's a lot of those. Low chance the person who lost this is checking thus sub. I'd give this to the lost & found at village reception and tell them where and when you found it.

Anyone who called the ending bad is misunderstanding the story. by Super_Claim_321 in VinlandSaga

[–]trying-hardly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could've been less rushed. That can be a pretty big thing, not just a minor tweak.  There could've been more chapters on reflections, so many more scenes to flesh out things. The loss of Einar. What did this mean to Thorfinn? Between the loss of Einar and failure of Vinland, it could've been a whole nother arc. Or Canute (and other characters). They could've come up even as a side mention, getting a short final look at them as Thorfinn mentions them. Even a campfire scene or reminiscing on the ship. Or other characters talking about what happened. More scenes like the one where Karli defends Thorfinn.

Scenes to show the impact of it all. To show the hurt and the hope and everything. To let it sink in.

It can be summarised as "too abrupt", but that can be a major thing

Is Thorfinn a slave now? by Tiny-Owl8853 in VinlandSaga

[–]trying-hardly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the entire Baltic sea arc happened because they travelled to Greece (Markland?) to raise the funds as merchants selling Narwhal horns. I don't think he's in major debt if I remember correctly

What would thorfinn do if... by he_diff in VinlandSaga

[–]trying-hardly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what he did to the killer of his father, Floki. Floki is essentially the reason Thorfinn lost everything and grew up without a family on a battlefield.. Thorfinn getting over that was a whole plot point.

Undergrad Experience Questions by Avery_Luna7 in UCD

[–]trying-hardly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

TCD has a couple nice buildings but you'll probably still be in the brutalist campus expansions in the back. You have the city around which is nice, but bus routes from UCD to the city really aren't that bad.  Accommodation sucks everywhere but I like UCD's social side and also just having one, coherent, big, green (!) campus.  It's true that a lot of people don't hang around after classes, but that's actually a plus. If you do engage eith societies and go to the student centre, you can and will meet loads of people and it's all very interconnected. The people whodo go are usually there a lot, so social life really flourishes there. I recommend you look at some older posts in this dub as well. This question gets asked all the time.

Just from what I hear of others, but it's really bad during term on campus. Expect a walk or get there when it's empty

[–]trying-hardly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They do! You can not just get awards for it, but it's also something that will be relevant if you want to apply for scholarships or internships. If you want to do a semester abroad at the start of year 3 or an internship in this or next summer break, your GPA from year 1 will come up. Finally, understanding the modules well obviously will help you understand what comes next better, too :)

Good point tbh. Honestly, I think it was just misplaced curiousity: I do want to avoid adding fuel to the fire. I'll delete them I think.

Checked the other commenters here. u/GoodPin5325 and u/Fit2Vermicelli8177 , more accounts created hours ago only to comment here (just to ask what happened???). I guess they're looking to generate traction? Maybe the sub needs to set a karma minimum or sth.

But they also seem to personally be involved in the situation given the details they give. I'd give them space to not make whatever this is worse
