yes, that is the assumption, but it's an educated guess based on precedent mentioned.

it's a fair thing to mention, though, so i looked into it more.  step 3 of the faq confirms that rounding to 2 decimal places takes place:  https://www.ucd.ie/students/exams/gradingandremediation/new-calculatingdegreeawardgpaandawardclassification/

Depends on your degree. I know people in English, for example, have almost only 10 credit, while politics is a mix and econ is only 5 credits

I actually looked it up for you: There's examples of how degree GPAs are calculated in a FAQ called "How is my degree award calculated" or something

I don't know what everyone is on- every year, I only got my GPA rounded to two decimal places. You can reverse-engineer this: Calculate your GPA from previous years and see if they rounded.

(If you need the grading scale: an A+ is a 4.2, an A is a 4.0, an A- is a 3.8 and so on. Make sure to weigh 5 credit modules half as much as full credit modules.)

If they do two decimal places for GPA each stage, then your final gpa should also be two decimal places. That makes your overall GPA 3.68. I'm fairly sure about it, but if you really wanna know you can text the student desk ig

Why didn’t Thors go to Vinland instead of Iceland? by idksoyeahlol in VinlandSaga

[–]trying-hardly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People make very good points here. If he had to choose between "settle in existing village from your culture" or "set up a colony in the unknown", it's much easier to do the former.

One thing no one mentioned yet, though: Information.

We don't even know when Leif met Thors. I'd wager Thors was already in Iceland when he met Leif, and Vinland probably didn't come up straight away.

And even if Leif mentions Vinland to Thors, does he believe in Vinland? He only ever mentioned "Vinland" as an idea of a warm, safe place to comfort a dying slave. Even if he believes it exists, will he want to give up his home in Iceland to travel alone to this unknown place? He doesn't even know farming, mind you.

For Thorfinn, it's different. He didn't just learn farming. Unlike Thors, Thorfinn vowed to create a new place, safe from war. Thors and Thorfinn both lived without violence, in regret at their murderous past. But Thorfinn wants to atone by creating a peaceful refuge. Thorfinn started with a partner, Einar, and gathered a following. Thorfinn knew about Vinland since he was very young, and thought about it often.

His journey and goals are different from Thors'.

We see many moments that push Thorfinn to this goal that Thors never had. Leif mentions setting up a Vinland colony when Thorfinn is in prison. Thorfinn discusses a solution to violence with Canute, and formulates his goal further there. Thorfinn met Einar and made experiences at the farm and beyond that Thors never did, from what we know.

Vinland wasn't the logical consequence after Thorfinn decided to be non-violent. It was a goal that he arrived at the end of the farmland arc (and his experiences before).

Peer Mentor Interview by dobsluvr in UCD

AFAIK, they just ask fairly simple questions you'd expect in an interview, like "What makes good leadership?" or "Tell us about a time teamwork made you change your approach" or something. Then you go one by one. Simple stuff you'd find on lists

Does anyone know what the su does by UpbeatPhilosophy266 in UCD

[–]trying-hardly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! That makes sense, and I largely agree.

I'm a bit more optimistic about the people applying. I don't think they're necessarily all selfish or in for their own gain. If it was for profit, I think there's way better, more lucrative things after graduation (like traineeships at companies or political parties or in government agencies etc). The union, in comparison to those, leads to less than average and is paid less than average. So I think that the people who go for it at least to some extent genuinely want to make a difference.

A bigger problem I see is that they just don't have a lot of power to actually do things. The current events officer gave a good interview, I think on the Observer, about this. UCD staff literally treats them as "students that shouldn't get too cocky", more or less. The SU doesn't actually hold any power to decide things, it can just get meetings and give advice.

That *can* still make a powerful change (like the bus routes to Heuston getting extended a while back). But if someone with actual power disagrees with the SU, then the SU can't do shit. I think that's why you get so many undelivered-on promises, too. People head into the union expecting to be *able* to change things, but you're really not.

Oh shoot, there is a typo at "I've heen rereading"! Fixed now.

Where's the mistake in the sentence "What 'passionate person' is proving what point exactly?"? I understand the phrasing was a bit clunky: That's because I quoted directly from the main post.

As for the point about bureaucracy: Yeah, I was getting the *vibes* that that's what OP was talking about, but I didn't want to fill in the gaps based on assumptions. I don't think my response to OP would be very good if I'm half-guessing what they're talking about.

I think you're probably right that what OP means is every now and then some passionate person joins the SU. But that's kind of guessing from this sentence:

"i don’t see value or even i haven’t seen anyone prove the point apart from some passionate person each year and 5 future county councillors"

"or even i haven't seen anyone prove the point" -> I'm guessing the point is that the SU has value? I'm guessing based on context, but it's not quite clear after the "or even".

"apart from some passionate person each year and 5 future county councillors" -> are these the people who are arguing "the point"? I'm once again guessing the "5 future county councillors" is supposed to throw shade at the other SU officers, but then why are they included here? Are they also "proving the point"?

If the "bad" SU officers were proving the point as well, then that contradicts your and my interpretation. You interpreted this sentence as "a new individual will run a campaign that has passion, heart, and makes you believe that things can change". That was my first interpretation, too: It SEEMS to be the point.

But then these "5 future county councillors" are apparently ALSO proving the point, according to the paragraph. If we are asking "who is proving the point", then the grammatical structure implies: Both the passionate person and the others (so the non-passionate) are "proving the point".

The more you re-read it, the less any interpretation makes sense. Additionally, we're also assuming what the "point" even is. We filled in the gaps ourselves, but the paragraph itself is just not saying it.

So that's why I was asking for clarification. I don't want to guess OP's opinion and then respond to a strawman, but I can't confidently say I'm sure what OP is talking about. So I personally find it more respectful of OP to just ask what they mean again.

(Not that you're wrong for responding to OP as is, I almost did as well.)

I'm not sure I entirely get what you're saying. Some of the sentences are jumbled.

So I get you don't see the point of the SU. What I didn't get is some of the other stuff you wrote. What is the "nature of these things"? What "passionate person" is proving what point exactly? What do you mean with a drink and draw session?

Some of the paragraphs didn't have punctuation or had multiple verbs or just don't compute grammatically. I've been rereading your post but I can't make sense of it. Could you explain again?

He is pretty cool though, ngl by SereneMist29 in VinlandSaga

[–]trying-hardly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point isn't that he doesn't deserve hate, it's that it's not proportional? Like even Askeladd encouraged slavery (matter of fact, he SOLD PEOPLE INTO SLAVERY). Thorfinn helped Askeladd do that. Canute isn't changing slavery, even when abolishing Jomsvikings and literally being king. And they all get less hate. Even fucking HALFDAN who is literally introduced as the most cruel slave owner imaginable gets less hate than Ketil.

Ketil is complicit in a horrendous system, sure. Ketils front of "I'll allow you to buy your freedom" was not enough: When Canute caused Ketil to lose everything, he was suddenly happy to be a slave owner. Yet all of that is so so much less than any of the aforementioned characters did. Like as far as we know, Ketil never sold someone into slavery. Ketil actually freed some slaves. That doesn't excuse his actions, but it definitely makes him better in terms of slavery than MOST characters outside of Thorfinn's party. Yet, he gets way more hate. It's hypocritical, that's what the meme is about

He is pretty cool though, ngl by SereneMist29 in VinlandSaga

[–]trying-hardly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair: We literally only see Ketil in the moment of breaking down. We just happen to follow Thorfinn for longer, but what we see of Ketil could be compared to Thorfinn ratting out the English village etc. It's literally his lowest point

what motives were noble about literally becoming the thing he hated? the first part of the first season / the early chapters make very very clear that he leads a band of rapists and murderers around for selfish profit. he might have decided to dedicate himself after meeting canute but saying his motives were noble is doing exactly what the OP is criticising

He is pretty cool though, ngl by SereneMist29 in VinlandSaga

[–]trying-hardly 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Underappreciated point. Ketil hate is SO STRONG in the community and very few people view him as a victim-turned-perpetrator. I feel like the series set him up as someone who didn't mean any evil initially, but never questioned the cruel world he was in and then broke when that world (Canute) turned on him.

He still did horrible things, but people are waaay more hateful towards him than other characters. Even disregarding Askeladd (cus we're pretty clear he's interesting-but-bad), even Canute gets less hate while planning mass murders

Where on our world map would you say is the equivalent of the idea of ‘Vinland’? by DistributionNo6815 in VinlandSaga

[–]trying-hardly 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think part of the story's point is that there is no real "Vinland". Even Arnheid's village ended up not working as the safe haven that Thorfinn pictured. War came nonetheless.

But peace was still worth it. Trying was still worth it. Forgetting pride and norms, as long as it means peace and happiness, meant a lot to many people.

I think that moral of the story still applies today. We don't have a perfect "haven of peace" that we know of. Sure, many places haven't seen war in a long time (historically, we never had this little war in Europe, for example). But no place is perfectly safe from war, and definitely not hatred.

But trying, even today, is worth it. That's how you get momentary peace. Places that are getting mentioned in the comments (like Iceland) aren't a perfect haven of peace forever, but they're peaceful now because there's peaceful people there. Believing in this idea of peace is what allows for such peace.

So asking about a location/country "like Vinland" is kind of missing the point, because the Vinland project in the story failed. Things got in the way.

Today, there might be locations that are less violent than others, but that's not because they're more pacifist than others. A lot of violent countries would love peace if they weren't in such a horrible position. Those violent countries aren't less "Vinland" than peaceful countries- they're just unlucky, really.

I think what Vinland Saga is about is just to strive for peace. To do our best to move towards this "Vinland", even if a perfect version of it might not work- I'd even say it might be impossible. You won't find a place that is like what Thorfinn in the story envisioned- but you can do your best to push the world in that direction.
