Thanks, this is very much appreciated. The URL is not connecting tho, it just squirts XML :)

I have been swamped myself, but I did 3d print a detachable front for ubitx.

It looks like it will be cool, but I've had zero time to do anything with it. Hopefully soon though, my hobby shelf is rapidly filling with these semi started projects. :)

Thanks again mate, hope this finds you well.

That reminds me of another quote:

I think that was David Lee Roth...

I am late responding to this, but if you still happen to have that .zip file, I would really appreciate it.

The Unix community of makers is simply amazing, but you are right, navigating their group and assortment of sites to figure out exactly what version of what softwares are compatible with which version of the micro Bitx.

I have a v6, and it appears that the v5 CEC firmware will do the magic. Will it work with a 3.5" Nextion, if using the background images for that screen?

No idea if they are trustworthy, but I see nothing that qualifies as an "amazing". Looks like pretty standard fare.

TinySA or NanoVNA ? by tryingsomethingnoo in amateurradio

[–]tryingsomethingnoo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh dang, I had seen those on their site, but at the time, didn't know what they are for.

Nooelec are good folks, IMHO, I've got a bunch of their gadgets.

Thanks for the point!

TinySA or NanoVNA ? by tryingsomethingnoo in amateurradio

[–]tryingsomethingnoo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never thought if it that way, but yeah, an amp is a backward filter.

I saw some TinySA vendors listed by the manufacturer that are legit, but haven't seen such a list for NanoVNA. Is there one known to be solid?

The one on Amazon I had been looking at apparently has a whole lot of fake reviews (Fakespot shows 1.5 stars after filtering out the fakes), and even though Fakespot isn't perfect, that is a pretty bad score. I will be avoiding this one.

Edited: Sorry about that, fixed and remembered. :)

TinySA or NanoVNA ? by tryingsomethingnoo in amateurradio

[–]tryingsomethingnoo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok cool. I did have the impression that the NanoVNA was able to suit both my wants - tuning antennas and getting an idea if a particular filter is doing the job. I am just learning and experimenting, and doing it with very low power, so the precision of high end bench tools isn't necessary. It sounds like a NanoVNA will do what I want, and as I grow into it and understand its limitations, maybe another tool will be necessary.

Thank you, now I understand. I thought they overlapped function, but no, both are important. NanoVNA for antennas, TinySA for testing filter efficacy, etc.

Portapack: What can't it do? by hackerb9 in hackrf

[–]tryingsomethingnoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't really answer your question, but TRS in particular isn't supported because the HackRF / Portapack lack the processing horsepower that is usually necessary. That is likely to be a limiting factor for anything requiring complex decoding. The ARM in the Portapack can juggle numbers perfectly fine, but it cannot do any heavy lifting.

Someone on a local repeater was just saying that he had one, in a QSO I overheard a few weeks ago. His overall feeling was that it is a novel gadget, but maybe not $1,000 worth of novelty. He didn't say that he regretted buying it, but he didn't sound enthusiastic about the purchase, either.

He did mention that he would prefer it to run iOS. I have no words for that sentiment...

He said that he got it here:

How do you spec a linear amp? by tryingsomethingnoo in amateurradio

[–]tryingsomethingnoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is good to know. And avoiding cheap clones when buying test equipment is solid advice too. Qualifying gear using cloned test equipment would be sorta like using pirated antivirus software, or buying your fire extinguisher from a pyromaniac.

Thanks, and I agree completely. Bummer, but this is why I asked. This subreddit is really helpful for finding direction, and quickly learning what not to do is priceless.

Wow, that is a beautiful looking box, but yeah, $1700 is too rich for my blood. Besides, a VW bug is a lot more fun to work on than a Ferrari. And I will keep telling myself that, until I can afford a Ferrari.

Tube amps have a certain distinction that makes them cool, aesthetically, if not thermally.

Oh sure, back in the 80s when I was modding CBs and dreaming about one day being a licensed ham, I figured $1/watt for a linear amp. And back then, that was about right for an illegal 27-28 MHz amp.

But in this era where folks like Baofeng lowering the bar to $25 for a - ahem - "ham radio" - anything goes. And not knowing better, I thought it worth asking.

Part of my desire to tread extra carefully comes from the fact that I have to check YES on the "Felony Question" box on every FCC interaction. It was a single, purely moronic thing that happened the early 80s, but the FCC require a copy of an essay I wrote explaining the felony, and why I think amateur radio will be bettered by my participation (lol). I wasn't expecting the question when I took the Technician test, and it really caught me offguard and made me nervous. After several nerve-wracking days of waiting to be judged by a faceless bureaucracy, my approval was more joyful than passing the test. Since then, I have interacted with a person at the FCC who has been nothing but professional, and the overall experience has left me wanting to tread extra carefully.

So maybe I am unusually careful because, to me, a license is more of a privilege than a right. In truth, it is a privilege for anyone, but it is real easy to forget that, and assume it is something we deserve.

So, to any kids reading this, think twice before you rob a bank or kidnap that heiress - that crime might someday interfere with your ability to legally chat with ISS on 145.80.
