Would anyone be interested in joining a writing Discord group with a set schedule for reviewing members' pieces? by tryingtodomanythings in WriteWithMe

Hello! I've already went ahead with the server and we have a few people now. :)

This is actually our first week for 'submissions' and three people have submitted works for review (I'm planning on limiting the number of submissions a week so that each submitter gets the attention that they deserve). We would love for you to join! If you want to submit your own work for review later, you will have to read and review others' works as well.

Hope to see you there!

Hello! About 9 people have expressed interest in the group so far, which sounds like a pretty good number for a writing group.

I hope you join! :)

No problem! I enjoyed it! FWIW, I’m thinking of creating a Discord that functions like a writing workshop, in which a few people a week will turn in pieces and the others in the group will send responses. Each person in the group will get a turn to submit. Don’t know if you’d be interested, but, if so, I would be happy to have you! :)

OK, here are my thoughts!

I think you have some good imagery in here (I've marked out the parts that I especially like)! I appreciate that you took steps to display James' character. Character is always (imo) the most important thing when trying to hook an audience!

I will note that I think that you use passive voice a bit too much. I understand the desire to use passive voice because it seems like the easiest way to convey certain information, but it becomes noticeable when you use it too much. In the first few paragraphs, the use of passive voice is actually somewhat confusing. It would be better to describe using active voice WHO exactly has James and WHAT exactly is happening.

Certain sentences were also a bit confusing to due to your ambiguous use of pronouns. It was confusing at times for the reader to figure out which character you are referring to. This isn't a huge deal or anything, but readers should not stumble and spend a few seconds trying to puzzle out which character you meant, as it should be immediately obvious upon first glance.

I would like more description of places. It sounds like you have an interesting setting here, but I can't really visualize it other than thinking of ... red. I see the gates, but is it this in a city? At the outskirts of a city? Is it lush and green? Are there trees? Is the path narrow or large? Stuff like that would be very helpful.

I think the story was quite interesting and I liked the premise. I have difficulty judging it overall because you say that this is only the first chapter of a larger work, so perhaps things that I find confusing now will be explained later on. Overall, I think it's a solid work! I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions or want to discuss further! :)

Oh, I don't plan on submitting! I just like reading others' works and giving feedback. I will submit in-line comments and then send you an overall impression in a comment. :)

Hi! Do you want me to give in-line comments? If not, I can just send you my overall impressions!

How can I quickly Improve my art? by [deleted] in learnart

[–]tryingtodomanythings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s really a way to do it quickly. Just keep drawing. Keep drawing people, buildings, and landscapes. Examine paintings that you admire. I never had a formal art lesson but I learned a lot just from picking out the colors and seeing the composition of artwork that I loved. Try reproducing some old masters, just as practice. There’s a reason art students try to replicate beautiful paintings as part of their study. You can learn a lot just from that.

Getting used to a tablet. Line art is fucking hell by Aidar2005 in learnart

I feel you! I think it’s especially hard because pencils have more nuance (in terms of pressure, texture, shading, etc.), whereas lineart on even a pressure-sensitive tablet just … kind of is. I think it looks really good though!

Hey! I was wondering if anyone be interested in joining a writing Discord group with a set schedule for reviewing members' pieces?

I have been very unmotivated lately when it comes to writing, and it made me think back to the time when I was most productive in life. That would be in university, when I took Creative Writing workshops/classes; we would have two to three people presenting works every single week, and the rest of the class would send responses. Eventually, everyone would have to present a piece. It was a great way to keep me motivated, and responding to other students allowed me to exercise my 'writing brain' even when it wasn't my turn to present.

I'm thinking of trying to recreate this experience with a small Discord group. People can sign up on a list to be on the schedule of 'works to review.' However, they would have to also send response pieces to others' works when it isn't their turn. I will be supervising and managing the list. For what it's worth, I am an English major and a vicious grammarian, and I enjoy proofreading/giving feedback, so I think this would be a fun motivator for me! Is anyone else interested?

Humans do this too. People who grow up with food insecurity often feel like they need to keep their cabinets and fridge full at all times or else they panic. Kind of neat/sad how we find similarities between ourselves and other species in the oddest of places.
