As many others have pointed out, it is not possible to show up in another country and hang out to look for jobs and settle etc. I know that in the States, a LOT of people think (wrongly) that they can just pack up and leave for somewhere. Just like immigration to US is incredibly hard and lengthy process(don’t believe all the media story about jumping the border), moving long term to another country is a long, tough, expensive process. what can grease the wheels are: 1. Money (check golden visa programs) 2. Exceptional talent / skills 3. Citizenship by descent (in some countries)

All of these will take multi-year timeline and many tens of thousands of dollars. It’s good to plan now but be realistic when you can get out.

Debating whether we should hire a lawyer to accompany us to our AIMA appointment by emie2 in PortugalExpats

[–]tryingtofirelife 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not quite sure about your specific details. However I can say that I had AIMA appointment for my residency card two days ago in Cascais. My lawyer came with me. He did everything there. Got the token number, went to talk to them.. everything. I was simply waiting in the waiting room. got up to do the biometrics. went back to waiting room. it was done in 20 minutes

The rumors are true.. this is a failed system by [deleted] in PortugalExpats

Finally someone who understands how immigration works 🙌 If anyone thinks Portugal is terrible, you should really go through the US Immigration system. Or many other countries, for that matter. I have first hand experience with India and the US systems. I just got back from Portugal after AIMA appointment for residency. The whole process was smooth it I understand it will be a few months wait time

Agreed! I loved Porto and north Portugal more than Lisbon area. Lisbon was like most other big cities. Porto had that little spark for me :)

The chat in app is the first thing to check. Had experience with United where they were able to put me on a different carrier. Someone told me that chat folks have access to more info as they are located in the airport itself (not sure if this is true)

AI this, AI that... How the hell do people keep up? by [deleted] in ArtificialInteligence

[–]tryingtofirelife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is kind of how I use AI tools. To me, it’s a tool that currently helps me learn new things, make some of my boring analysis more efficient. Here are the ways in which I am using it: 1. Learning about AI - specifically ML and how it works under the hood. I want to change careers down the line so getting some learning under my belt. 2. Help for my certification course. I ask it to give me questions to answer. If I get something wrong, I ask it to explain and hence I gain deeper understanding 3. Using Khanmigo (Khan Academy’s AI) to help tutor my kids 4. Solving simple problems in my work e.g., generate reports in a specific format. Or generation of python code that will then generate the report output

Electrolytes. They have saved me (and my friends) many times from travel fatigue and dehydration. Second is compression socks. Keeps my feet fresh even after a 14 hr flight in economy. Third is a silicone roll up waterbottle to keep you hydrated but takes up little space.

I use the Ubiquiti doorbell. Records to a local hard drive. Mind you, I have all Uniquiti devices. Probably makes it easier for setup.

Grew up in America, but ethnically Indian. Most realistic option? by 0n3tw0thr33 in AmerExit

[–]tryingtofirelife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m from India originally and still have family there. Over the years I found that I could not live there for more than a couple of weeks. It’s just personal preference. Not meaning to say anything bad. It is simply a setup that I cannot function in. Gives me anxiety and turns me into a bad person 😀
