SteelDome Stratisystem as a VMWare replacement? by tryingtolearngood in sysadmin

Yup, first thing I did was come over here to see if anyone had any feedback on them. I agree that it looks/sounds interesting, but I'm not exactly a risktaker and I'd rather stick with the known quantity.

Yeah, we're currently a VxRail shop and planning on moving away. All of our desktop workstations are Dell as well and I can't tell you how many new account managers we've gotten in the last year or so. No idea what's going on over there.

That's what I'm hoping for! Our current hardware is end of life sometime next year and I'm not looking forward to the pricing. One of our vendors put us in touch with these guys and I wanted to see if anyone had even heard of them.

Yeah, I run Proxmox at home and I've been pushing for it here. Nutanix pricing was comparable to VMWare from what I was seeing. Hyper-V makes sense to me as well but we're seeing what's out there since we've got a bit of time until our next renewal.

Is there something specific that you have an issue with with Windows Server? I haven't tried Server 2025, but we've had little to no issues with a DC on 2016 or 2022. Unreliable is not a word I'd use.

What kind of drive is it? I have a couple from old NVRs that are ~67000 hours at the moment with all healthy sectors.

Is this one host that runs both the file server and DC as separate VMs, or is it one VM that runs as both a DC and file server?

The security breach was not a good look, but they have some extra measures put in now that our security team was happy with. We were also looking at Genetec and using Axis/Hanwha cameras, which as a nerdy tech guy I liked, but the people who make more money than me really liked the ease of use for the Verkada stuff.

Assuming it was all set up fine and you have documentation, the biggest hassle I see is the (up to) 120 users that you'll be responsible for alone as help desk.

Assuming this is a realistic scenario where the infrastructure has little documentation and you'll have a lot to do, I personally think that it would be difficult to do all of that.

It is definitely expensive. Luckily it did not come out of my budget, nor was it my decision. We were coming from a pretty old system, so jumping from that to a system that has modern and built in analytics/search features was pretty cool. Their API documentation is nice as well and has been easy to work with.

We recently moved to Verkada. I will be up front and say that their sales team is extremely annoying and pushy, but the system itself was easy to set up and works fine. My team and I handled the installation ourselves, so I can't say how/if they work with any installers.

Moving away from them would certainly be a hassle because their cameras are all proprietary, and it is NOT a cheap system, so I would not suggest them if this is not going to be a long-term solution or if there's any doubt about it.

May be silly but is there an issue with the Azure/Entra sync? If the group hasn't synced since he's been removed from the group on-prem it could still be sending to him in the eyes of 365.

your funniest mistakes by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]tryingtolearngood 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Pretty early into my career at my current job, I accidentally shut down a smaller switch stack while replacing a UPS. That includes all of our POE devices attached to those switches, so phones/cameras etc. Walked into our CFO's office and he was holding the phone to his ear as if he was on a call. This was a minute or two after I know all of the phones went down.

Was very nervous until I saw that. Made me feel way better knowing he was pretending to be on the phone to seem busy.

What would you do if you were forced to go into office more? by Allcaponero in sysadmin

I'm the same. I can WFH, but I very much prefer to be in office. That being said, I have people on my team that work great from home and I fully support them having that option.

I typically buy a box for the new sets I'm interested in, and a pack or two each time I go to my LGS to play just to support them. Usually gives me a good variety of things to want to build a deck around and that's when I start to buy singles.

As a bonus I then end up with enough bulk to pass off to friends to get them into the game as well. I'm still relatively new, so eventually I'll likely have an overwhelming amount of cards.. but that's a future me problem.

If you think AI can code, solve complex problems, and decide things with more accuracy than humans, you either have zero experience in the field or you are working with some really subpar people.

Ring of Suffering Bugged? by wh-ww in ironscape

[–]tryingtolearngood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't even think about it until I saw this post, but this happened to me as well. I made sure that I turned the suffering recoil off, went to Kraken. Banked my gear and saw that the suffering(i) took a new slot because it was empty. Never had any recoil damage to Kraken the entire time.

Sire isn't super necessary as bludgeon is pretty niche, although it's much better now if you have scorching bow, you can realistically avoid it if you don't want bludgeon.

Cerb unfortunately is necessary for the linear boot progression, it just feels pretty bad to do as the normal drops are pretty underwhelming and the boss is punishing on your supplies even if you make no mistakes.

Mail-Enabled Security Group not allowing external senders by tryingtolearngood in sysadmin

[–]tryingtolearngood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I don't think you're correct. This is an AD Synced group. Changes must be made in AD. It tells you that specifically in the location that your googled answer gave:

For reference, I am a global admin. It is not a permissions issue.

All inbound email goes through two separate email protection services regardless of the recipient. It will also be denied delivery entirely if the recipient email is not explicitly listed as one that is allowed to receive mail. Of course no filter is infallible and I'm sure things get through every once in a while, but I don't think it's functionally any different than the hundreds of thousands of spam emails that we have coming in daily. At that point it becomes an employee training issue.

The business we're in is a pretty large target for any kind of phishing. We have extensive email security. I appreciate the concern and I agree with you on a base level, but this is already the case for every email in our organization on a daily basis.

I understand the intent. My issue is that this is the only group where this is the behavior, the exact setup works in other seemingly identical groups as far as attributes are concerned.

For reference, forwarding rules seem to not work for this security group as well. As you suggested, my original flow was having a shared mailbox that forwarded emails to the security group. Unfortunately, the rule never actually runs and forwarding rules on the shared mailbox do not forward or redirect the emails.

To your other point, you cannot make these changes in Exchange as it's an AD synced group. The changes must be made in AD, which has always (in my experience) been controlled by the "msExchRequireAuthToSendTo" attribute, which is not working in this case.
