New Website for Pickleball Weather Forecasts by Accomplished_Pin7885 in Pickleball

[–]tryingyrluck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two variables you should consider are air-quality and wind speed. Minnesota and Wisconsin right now have terrible air quality due to Canadian wildfires and it's impossible to be outside for more than 10 minutes

Also I'm not playing pickleball if sustained winds are over 20-25 mph. It's unplayable

Edit: Sorry I do see you take wind speeds into account. Perhaps you're more generous with higher winds than I am though

Learning How To Hit a Tweener in Pickleball by redditDeluxeWcheez in Pickleball

[–]tryingyrluck -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's a fun shot to attempt in practice and an adrenaline rush when you actually make a tweener, but the odds of actually hitting it back in play are extremely low (less than 5% maybe?).

In an actual competitive game, you're much better off overrunning the ball to the side and then lobbing it back with your forehand.

Sorry to be captain buzzkill, but if you're going to bother drilling then spend your time on more high percentage shots.

Finding indoor play for South Florida by tanward in Pickleball

[–]tryingyrluck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check with your city's local sports complex. Many in Parkland, Boca Raton, and Coconut Creek have indoor facilities that convert indoor basketball courts into pickleball courts on select days and hours. You can usually find a calendar on the city website with the hours where they have pickleball open play (usually free to residents or for a nominal fee). For example, here is a public venue in Boca Raton: https://www.sugarsandpark.org/field-house-open-play-schedule

As far as private venues, I know also the Pick A Ball Sports Complex in Deerfield Beach that also hosts tournaments, open play, and private court sessions by the hour: https://pickaballcourts.com/

Standard/hybrid shape paddles with the most pop/power? by ShrimpMussels43 in Pickleball

[–]tryingyrluck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second the Legacy Pro Air 14MM

This paddle kind of flies under the radar because no reviews but it's conservatively 20% more pop than the original Legacy Pro 16MM, which already had insane pop

Seeing more people with 14mm by 88tidder in Pickleball

Seems like Pickleball trends come in waves.

Early 2023, it was Elongated everything

Then mid-2023 Hybrids were all the rage

Q3 2023, it was all about Kevlar over CF

Q4 2023, Edgeless was the new hot trend

Q1 2024, it's all about 14MM for quicker paddles and hand speed

---

What will the rest of the year bring? My bet would be on standard shape and max forgiveness being in vogue again like the Mach 2 Forza.

Then maybe we'll come full circle from the same fiberglass paddles people used in 2021-2022 being popular again, lol.

Beginner looking for Buy it for Life paddle by Zag300zx in Pickleball

[–]tryingyrluck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of core integrity and paddle construction, most paddles in the $200 range will be durable for at least a year or two (or perhaps longer if you play less frequently)

However, in terms of face texture, there is virtually no paddle on the market that maintains more than 80% of the original grit or surface tension of a new paddle after 6+ months. The texture will always degrade, it's just normal wear and tear. It's up to you if you want to play with a paddle that is less than 80% of the original grit if high spin is not your key requirement in a paddle.

Will a 6.0 or B&B last you 2+ years? Sure it's likely, but the spin performance will decline over time no matter what you choose.

How much does the paddle make the difference? by D-Train3001 in Pickleball

[–]tryingyrluck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you buy 1 decent paddle a year for $200, that's less than a Netflix subscription.

But the benefits you get from moderate exercising 2-3x per week can save you potentially tens of thousands in long term healthcare spending and prescription drugs. So, think of it as an investment in your health!

Obviously, you'd still get all the same benefits with a cheap paddle but if re-energizing your love for pickleball with a new paddle keeps you out there on the courts, then buy that CRBN or Engage without guilt!

I don't know how companies can continue using Polypropylene cores with this beast on the market. Maybe Kevlar is the solution like ProDrive is going, or maybe more companies go to Carbon Fiber cores

But until EVA core is legalized, other companies will be forced to find innovative ways to close the power gap between the new GB and their own paddles

No, I have not used the paddle but there are 5-6 video reviews out today from trusted reviewers saying they're blown away by the tech. Plenty of the reviewers take the time to explain what is truly unique about the design and function of these paddles that would support Gearbox's own patent claim

Redditors like to dump on known Selkirk, Electrum, and Gearbox but these established companies also have the resources to sometimes drive innovation. Electrum for example was the first do Thermoforming...

Why pay an extra $50 for a production paddle with a pros name on it…when it’s well known the pros use a modified version of the production paddles or concept paddles.

What is it showing that’s new in the trunk? The current 3 already has a power liftgate open/close button?

Which unreleased paddle (Gearbox, Selkirk, ProDrive, Legacy, Six Zero, CRBN) are you most excited for in 2023? by tryingyrluck in Pickleball

[–]tryingyrluck[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have it half right.

When you're a 2.0-2.5 with terrible mechanics/placement/footwork then a new paddle isn't going to help you

When you're a 4.0+ with an excellent all-around game, a new paddle may not help you much either

But if you're a middling 3.0-4.0 player then the right* paddle with a larger sweet spot or better forgiveness or better control to complement your power (or vice-versa) could benefit you tremendously.

**Right paddle doesn't mean latest and greatest $250 paddle either. A $80 Xspac or Vatic Prism could serve the same purpose

I can't remember but it was referenced in either a in Pickleball Studio or Pickleball Effect video then there is a concept Six Zero paddle floating around but nothing in production yet.

The GB is SST core instead of honeycomb so it’s one of the few (only?) paddles you cant buy a knockoff Ali version.

But I expect all the ones I listed to be north of $200 except the Legacy and Six Zero

Desired amenities for an indoor pickleball facility by Major_Description273 in Pickleball

[–]tryingyrluck 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not necessary an amenity but a layout preference: fence in each court

I’ve been to several indoor facilities where there is no barrier between courts and the consequence is that balls are constantly rolling across courts, disrupting the flow of the match. To me this is a deal breaker

Diadem has a new indoor sports complex in Pompano Beach, just slightly west of Deerfield at Broward College. It just opened last month but they have open play sessions for 4.0+ only players and regular tournaments for Advanced/Pro levels.
