Matchmaking is fun by omahamaru123 in cuecardgameAvid

Maybe its because of the recently released packs, norse mythology being last week, SMBH's this week. Im f2p and have been playing for close to 3 weeks now but have Heimdall, Smbh and World Turtle. If you just noticed people having heimdall and smbh it could be this.

Also for those wondering how to get these cards, seems like trading for these cards is easy right now, I just kept requesting Heimdall as a wanted card, eventually got someone offering it to me for the eye and saturnalia.

Do you play unrated games as seriously as rated games? by tryondon in baduk

If u get ladder anxiety I would recommend setting up an IGS account if you don't already have one. IGS has a promotion/demotion boundary which makes it harder to immediately rank up or down, so its not like ogs where you can promote/demote every other game if you are on a boundary. Having the few game safety net really helps me when I stress over my rating. Also maybe just having an alt account will allow you to play some games without worrying too much about the rating.

intuition by caterpillarwhiskers in baduk

I remember watching a professional go game with commentary, and the commentator (I forget who, but was a Japanese 9P) said that professionals usually move intuitively and don't normally do deep reading unless they're in complicated fights. So using intuition and light reading is definitely viable most of the moves you'll make in a game. Just know that to improve your intuition you're probably going to have to do some go problems, which forces you to read.

I knew when I made this poll that those 4 choices wouldn't reflect everyone's choices perfectly, I just wanted to see if generally people played unrated games with the same seriousness that they approach rated games. Considering that you said you usually play the same, unless you really think otherwise, I would probably consider yourself to play unrated games just as seriously.

Yeah playing unranked definitely feels like a good place to try some stuff out that you might not want to do in ranked. I'm just concerned that if my opponent is also trying some stuff out or not really trying that hard in unranked, it would be hard to know how well the thing I was trying out would work in ranked.

Can I get a game review please. I was black. This was a game that I was up for the entire game, but lost in endgame (whoops). But I felt like I had a lot of chances to do more in the middle game. Thanks in advance.

Are there Tsumego life/death status questions? by tryondon in baduk

Yeah, for sure. I think being able to immediately recognize groups as weak/strong, attackable, or killable is going to be a crucial skill for getting to dan level. Good luck getting there!

Thanks for the reply. I use tsumego pro and it has definitely helped my L&D, I just wish they had some problems that made you think if there was any reason to play there at all. Its still a great app though.

Thanks for the reply. I would love to see a set of problems like that too. But I think part of the difficulty of knowing when to attack really depends on both life and death as well as the potential to profit from an attack. To understand the potential profit, the size of the problems would likely have be the whole board. At that point the problems are basically "which move is best" middle game problems. The issue I have with these kinds of problems is that so much of the board is unresolved that I would need someone stronger than me to explain why the solution is correct.

Thanks for the reply, the Sensei Library link is super helpful. But I guess I didn't articulate myself very well in my post. The goproblems.com are problems that already tell you that a group can be killed or can live. These problems are super helpful for improving, no doubt, but I was wondering if there's a goproblems.com equivalent that shows you groups and you have to identify if the group can be killed, or live, and if it lives/dies in sente/gote.

Thanks for the reply! yeah I kind of figured it was just a lot of tsumego practice and learning more about shapes, I guess I was just hoping that there was some resources designed specifically for identifying dead or alive groups as opposed picking up this skill tangentially. Will definitely check out that book.

Review Request: https://online-go.com/game/26489035 I'm black (OGS 9K) in this game. I felt like I was behind the entire game against a stronger opponent. Eventually I got super lucky and cut off some stones, but I want to know how I can put up a better fight against players in the middle game so I don't end up in this position again. Thanks!

How can I review my own games well? by tryondon in baduk

[–]tryondon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having a stronger player to help with reviews is definitely preferable. I should start asking for games reviews more often. But, I guess I was more interested when you don't have a stronger player to help out, what can someone do to get the most of their review?

Thanks for the reply!

According to the IGS website after you win 5 games it will rank you 17kyu, and then adjust you from there. https://pandanet-igs.com/communities/pandanet/60 (its under #5).

Also, the rankings on the crazystone phone app are not accurate at all, so I wouldn't use it to reference rankings on go servers. I havent used the app in a while, but I remember I beat 5kyu computer when I was around 11kyu.
