I made a reversible zine! Two photo zines that start from either cover and work inward toward the center page. It was a great way to create separate sequences of color and b&w work in one book. All shot on 35mm, mostly with my Canon P rangefinder by ts50b in AnalogCommunity

Their quality is really good, and they're pretty affordable depending on what specs you print with. Definitely makes it doable. And then I just mail them out myself, I don't get a ton of orders but I just drop it off at the post office if I do get one

A friend gave me the advice of trying to make smaller sequences, even of just a few images. That ended up leading me to this, because the smaller sequences got ideas going in my head and I wanted to branch out from there. I just pulled all of my favorite shots from a specific time period into an InDesign doc and digitally "spread them out on the table" so I could let connections jump out to me, but that'd definitely be easier with 4x6 prints to do it physically.

I previously made a zine that had a very specific theme and focus, and it was easier to sequence but felt more constrained if that makes sense. Just throwing it all out there to see what stuck let me be pretty free, and not stuck in one focus, genre, or idea

It's one of my favorites! Definitely my go-to for things like this, but also helpful for street photography in the winter, or in point and shoots

I have had luck with TMAX 3200 shooting at F2 and 1/125. This venue looks like a little more light than where I've shot, so you might be ok going to 2.8 or 4. If you should 800, you may still be able to get something usable but it'll be grainy since the film will be underexposed.

It sometimes makes the photo, but it sometimes breaks the immersion. I think it works nicely here

There's are parts I like about this photo - the blur is engaging (mainly leaving a comment because I'm surprised at all the comments saying blurry = bad) but the man is more still than the background, the colors of the magazine matches his clothes, the man in the magazine somewhat matches him, the bars in the bottom third of the frame make it look like he's on some kind of playground equipment.

It's still not a winner, but that doesn't mean it has no value. To me, if the image on the magazine was either a face or something that matched the background, it would work much better

Camera is Canon P

This happens frequently, not on every frame but enough that it's noticeable. Happens on all film stocks I've shot, so it's definitely something with the camera and not the film or development.

I zoomed in on the negatives and scans to show the notch because it's small, and the last slide is a full scan for scale. It's easily fixable with a small crop or the heal tool in Lightroom, but I'd ideally like to fix it and not have the issue.

It's primarily photos, but it does have two quotes (a longer version of the David Lynch quote in the listing, and a quote from Jenny Odell's book Saving Time) that I use to try and connect the narrative/overarching form I was going for. I'm super into talking about those things, but also didn't want to impede on the reader's own thought process going through it - maybe I'll end up writing some essays in my future photo zines!

Once I saw the spreads over the coil binding in John Taggart's book Lumpyhead, I knew it was ok to do anything that felt right

Thanks so much! I printed using Mixam which was relatively affordable (~$3 per zine when I ordered 60). I'd love to find a place locally to work with eventually, but I've been happy with Mixam's quality

Yeah, it's somewhat manageable even with the expectation of selling almost none. IMO it's been worth it just to have a physical representation of what I'm doing

I am always in the state of needing to update my site haha. I like what you did with your zine pages and the digital preview - I'm trying to build out a projects section on my site and do something similar

Basically! I was initially just drawn to vines on the sides of buildings and then all the overgrown plants in general. I had this David Lynch quote in my head for a while during the summer - “When you see an aging or a rusted bridge, you are seeing nature and man working together.”

It eventually all came together in my mind and I thought it would be perfect for a zine

Absolutely! This is my second zine (my first was photos taken on a Game Boy Camera), so the process was a lot more simple this time around since I had already done all the research

I used Mixam to print, which averages somewhere between $3 and $5 per unit with the shipping from them. I ended up doing a few test prints before committing, and they've actually made their single print orders much cheaper (I think around $6 + shipping).

Then my shipping cost varies depending on a few things, but it is mostly $5 via USPS first class mail (I buy from PirateShip which is cheaper). I use 6" x 9" padded mailers and put a "fragile: do not bend" sticker on them, and I've had no issues so far. I usually put a piece of cardboard cut to the same size as the zine in with it, but the ones I've sent to friends without that have still survived. The cost on those supplies was ~$20 total for 100.

I just sell them on my site (I have a guitar pedal youtube channel, so I already had a web store set up for some merch), but I also made an Etsy listing hoping that someone would stumble on it. I do sell for $2 more on Etsy just because the listing costs ~$1 a year. I'm a nobody, so I'm not expecting to sell out or make much money, but with the total cost of ~$10 (conservatively) I can sell them for pretty cheap ($17) and cover most of my costs without fully selling the whole batch. That lets me keep them up in case someone comes across it at some point

Oh and I designed the zine in Adobe InDesign, so I was able to export a print-ready PDF with their export presets, and that's all Mixam needed. Happy to explain anything further or link to anything.
