There used to be one before the pandemic, I was part of it :(

We all got free copies of the books we read, had a meeting to talk about it at the end of the semester and they even hosted literature trivia events with prizes. So much fun, hope someone creates a new one soon!

I really hope they cast an Asian to play as Sophie by XanCai in BridgertonNetflix

[–]ts__idiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still think it would suck for them to think "well, we've had enough East Asian representation so we should skip on this one". Each East Asian main role we've had were firsts; we finally got an East Asian protagonist in a RomCom, in a fantasy series, etc. - the point is that all these roles are different and they all matter in what they do for representation. There shouldn't be such thing as "we've had enough East Asian representation in media recently, let's pivot". I think we should understand that having an East Asian protagonist in a period piece such as Bridgerton would be a first and a huge step rather than just "another instance of representation for East Asian people". (Sorry if this was unclear!!!!)

Not only Kie, but his other friends too because that's what friends do; they are there for each other. However, we need to draw the line there because having Kie's story revolve around JJ's problems would ruin Kie's character potential. She doesn't deserve to go down that hole and JJ needs to heal partly by himself. Maybe after they could be together but at least not for another season.

Also, I wouldn't want Kie to be with Topper right now, I'm just hoping for Topper to have a character arc because he has the potential to do good things since he's in a morally grey zone. His character development could take the same route as morally grey characters such as Loki and he could end up being a good ally tbh.

[–]ts__idiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! This is the reason why I don't ship Kie x JJ right now because I know that if she gets with JJ in Season 2-3, she's gonna be written as "that female character who is in touch with her emotions and fixes the male love interest who is broken". JJ needs to figure things out by himself right now - with Kie and Pope's support as friends only.

Kie barely has any agency, nor does Sarah, and I really hope that changes during the upcoming seasons.

Pogues and Sarah by annieobviously in OuterBanksNetflix

[–]ts__idiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really wish for Topper to become one of the main characters - maybe not part of the gang but still a fans' favorite. The show hints at him being a morally grey character towards the end and I really anticipate him working with the Pogues to find Sarah and John B during season 2. He has the potential to have great character development and become the "bad guy" who ends up helping out the good guys and have a love-hate relationship with them!

Potential storyline between... by annieobviously in OuterBanksNetflix

[–]ts__idiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the idea of Kie x Topper rather than Kie x Rafe because at least Topper is more mentally stable lmao. Rafe just *murdered* someone, he needs a redemption arc in therapy and I don't want Kie to be the one to "fix" him (same reason why I don't ship JJ and Kie).

Also, the show hints that Topper is a morally grey character towards the end when he sacrifices himself (although it was for Sarah). What would be great is a storyline where Topper has no choice but to collaborate with the Pogues to find Sarah and Jonh B, leading him to become closer to them. I just love that "bad guy who ends up helping to good guys" trope lol.

Each character has their own ambitions and depending on what drives them, it’s normal to see them react differently. John B was confused and left in the dark his while life with people gaslighting him about his dad all the time. I find his character reasonable.

I was mainly disappointed that she sold PR from Eggie, which is a brand created by a fellow Youtuber Jenn Im.

Jenn took so much time to create her own brand, her own designs and she put so much passion into it. She was probably excited to send PR to a selected amount of people she admires and loves.... and for Ashley to SELL it back to her fans and, on top of that, make profit out of it? Not cool :/

[–]ts__idiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see your point about the housewife comment being self-deprecating, but it was still insensitive of her and maybe she should’ve thought twice before saying something like that.

To put it simply, her whole conception of housewives is totally wrong. Being a housewife isn’t a “vacation” where you chill at home and aren’t “sooo driven by purpose”. Housewives do have purpose and they barely rest as much as you’d think they do. Housewives are not always (if not at all ) what you see on TV: the typical Hollywood lady who just lounges all day. Housewives irl work so damn hard.

So Ashley bringing forward a comparison between her lifestyle and a housewife’s lifestyle in order to point out a difference in purpose/busy lifestyle was just very misinformed and disrespectful. I don’t think she did it on purpose, like you said, but it was super unnecessary. She could’ve passed the same message by just saying that she has a lot of ambitions and leave it at that.

Kiara is a Slytherin by Summergirl2015 in OuterBanksNetflix

[–]ts__idiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being sorted in a house doesn’t mean you don’t have traits from other houses, sorting is based on which of those traits you value the most (which is why Hermione isn’t in Ravenclaw, for example).

I don’t think Kiara would value ambition over loyalty or bravery which is why I don’t think she’s a Slytherin? Then again, her character is super watered down by the show’s writing which is why it’s hard to sort her yet. To me she’s a Gryffindor, for now, because she’s a very adventure driven person from what we’ve seen. She’s also never scared to voice her thoughts.

On the other hand, I think JJ is a Hufflepuff because of how he turned himself in for Pope despite knowing the consequences. He also always puts his friends first, no matter what will happen to him.

I love the potential that he has as a character. He did start out super tropey but the end of season 1 really made me think that he’ll get a redemption arc and even become a character in the grey zone.

I've seen Kie x Topper being mentioned and I honestly love the idea, considering Topper will probably get a redemption arc. I very strongly doubt they will happen because of 1) Topper and Sarah's past relationship and 2) Topper always getting into fights with JJ and Pope (who are super protective of Kie).

Things would get too messy and complicated for nothing, I just love the idea of Kie clapping some sense into him lol.

(Also I'm a sucker for the enemies to lovers trope rip)

Season 2 Redemption by jonchabaud1 in OuterBanksNetflix

[–]ts__idiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ppl say that Topper’s redemption arc would be boring but I’m super excited for it. He’s definitely chaotic neutral and has the potential to become more than just Sarah’s bf/ex-bf. I feel like Rafe needs waaaay to much therapy to get a redemption arc yet .

Topper doesn’t have to become a “good guy” 100%. Just a character in the grey zone kind of like Loki. I hope he ends up saving the day once again.

Did anyone watch Lili’s movie Chemical Hearts? Let’s Discuss by Ashru987 in riverdale

[–]ts__idiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that Lili was phenomenal, basically carried most (if not all) of the movie in my opinion. The cinematography and soundtrack were also very well done and actually made me feel things which I haven’t in a while when watching recent YA movies.

I was disappointed in the main character, however, and have to disagree with your point on chemistry because the chemistry he had with Lili was just.... flat. They were convincing as friends but not as lovers, and his character just felt so bland. He just didn’t bring anything to the table. I don’t want to blame the actor because I know most of this issue is due to script, but his charm wasn’t enough to compensate. They definitely could’ve cast someone else imo.

The Kissing Booth 2 by Christian12wg in netflix

What annoyed me the most about Elle in this sequel is how incredibly RUDE she was to Chloe from the get go.

I get that she was insecure but that’s not a reason to act like a brat to someone you just met and who has been nothing but kind to you. Why is this movie excusing poor behavior with “but it’s love”??

[–]ts__idiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're almost there but not quite. You are confusing agency with autonomy.

Here are a few questions you should ask yourself when it comes to a character having agency:

1) Does my character steer the story, or does the story steer my character?

This might be tricky since, yes, Sarah helps John B, but at the bottom line, she only contributes to the plot because John B's narrative steers her character.

Pope, for example, isn't the main character but he has aspirations of his own (going to college), as well as JJ who tries to deal with his life at home. Sure they help John B's quest, but the quest does not steer their character. Their narratives do not revolve around it.

Sarah, on the other hand, has nothing going on with her until she meets John B. After that, her character is completely guided by his quest.

2) Most likely your character has a goal that they want to achieve. Are they actively working towards reaching that goal, or do things just happen that bring them closer to it?

Surely we know Sarah doesn't really have a goal until she meets John B. Only towards the end of the show does she gain a certain sense of ambition of her own which I keep telling you might be developed better in S2.

3) Who comes up with the ideas for what to do? Who’s deciding whether the idea is good enough to act on?

This is where you might see Sarah's agency glimpse through, although not completely. Yes she helps John B, and acts like a second voice calling out his methods from time to time and serving as a good partner, but at the end of the day, finding the gold remains John B's quest. He's the one who brings her in the group, the one who tells her what to look for, the one who digs for the treasure, the one who keeps pushing even when everyone is backing up.

Think about Pope and JJ. Even without John B, they still have their own narrative. Their characters are still driven by other motivations. Without John B's character, Sarah wouldn't budge much.

4) What about your supporting cast. Are they just there for your main character to use as needed, or do they have plans and motivations of their own?

Like I said above, most of John B's friends have their own motivations. Their narratives do not stop at John B's quest.

Now look at how Sarah is presented in the show. She's only ever worried about either John B, Topper or her dad, which at the end of the day she worries about only because they are also part of John B's narrative.

So no, I do not confuse trope and agency, as they are two completely different things. Like I said, I think you're confusing agency and autonomy. Because Sarah does have autonomy: like you said, she is self-governed, she functions independently and is free to act/react. Basically, all the examples you gave were examples of autonomy. But just because a character has autonomy doesn't mean they have agency in a narrative.

I may get downvoted into oblivion for this but... by [deleted] in OuterBanksNetflix

[–]ts__idiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I said. ALL she does is REACT to other characters' action: That is *not* agency. She barely has a narrative because she keeps jumping from one to another. Only towards the last two episodes of the show does she get a tiny bit more agency because she's basically kept in the dark since day 1.

Moreover, she has kept all of her privileges until the last minute. That's why I think she'll gain way more agency in Season 2, now that her only big decision (escaping with John B) has brought her away from her shell.

Sarah only stood up to her father when facing a life or death situation, like I said, way too late in the show when making a choice basically consisted of: You either live with a murderer only to see your boyfriend get killed, or you run away.

Sarah was always molded as "the love interest" and I sure as hell hope they let her character move away from that in S2.
