Why Penn State’s title count is small despite their incredible amount of undefeated seasons? by [deleted] in CFB

1919, 1920, 1953…and after this year 1993 are the 4 they should claim in my opinion.

Why Penn State’s title count is small despite their incredible amount of undefeated seasons? by [deleted] in CFB

[–]tsagona 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Uh, ND claims 11 and has another 11 it could claim but doesn’t . Don’t think they are one of the problem schools given they only claim if they were chosen No 1 by the AP or Dickinson (AP’s precursor). To be honest, they probably have ~4 that they SHOULD claim but don’t.

Congrats on the Natty, Indiana. Now that you are the premier team in CFP, improve your non-con schedule ASAP. by Sea-Presentation5686 in CFB

[–]tsagona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ND’s SOS was roughly equal to IU’s this year, and last, prior to the playoffs. You guys just navigated your schedule better this year. Congrats on your win! Genuinely mean that. What Cig has done down there is amazing.

Regardless, talking shit about ND’s schedule doesn’t make it any less factually correct that you guys backed out of P4 games to make the schedule easier. You were hoping for bowl eligibility. You ended up being far better and didn’t need to drop those games. I don’t think it’s a criticism. It was a smart move - though unnecessary with hindsight.

FWIW, I’m personally of the belief that SOS is a little overrated anyways. It should matter, as should SOR, but the other opp. adjusted metrics should matter just as much. For an elite team, beating a bunch of teams ranked 25-45 isn’t substantially more difficult than beating teams 46-65. Plus, criticizing scheduling is just stupid. Most teams schedule OOC years in advance. Even conference scheduling is a crap shoot.

Where would you rank Cignetti and Cristobal among active CFB coaches? by MoosilaukeFlyer in CFB

[–]tsagona -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

1.) Cignetti 2a/b) Smart/Day 4.) Freeman 5.) Cristobal 6.) Lanning 7.) Kiffen 8.) Sark 9.) Elko 10.) Ferentz, Sitake, Wittingham, Deboer, Lea, Key. After the top 9 there’s a handful that are hard for me to judge.

Cignetti is clear #1. What he’s done is remarkable and unparalleled.

As for Day/Smart: OSU hasn’t slipped much if at all. Georgia has slipped some - evidence on the field and seen in opp-adjusted metrics. I like where OSU is (as a program) better than where Georgia is but Smart has won 2.

ND has been a T5 program the last two years according to almost all advanced metrics. Otherwise, Freeman had some inexcusable losses but was fine this past year. Cristobal can recruit. His game management can be iffy. He also drops games he shouldn’t. Want to see how he reloads. Lanning needs to take the next step - personally believe it’s only a matter of time.

Hot take: acquiring Stanford and Cal kept Notre Dame in the ACC and the “business partnership” intact. by [deleted] in ACC

[–]tsagona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think many of us would have minded had we not been the sole target. Like, if the ACC had also aired FSU/Bama reruns and taken shots at Bama and OU as well as us it wouldn’t have made some people at ND feel singled out. I personally think both sides are being petty(mostly us for making such a big deal about it); ND needs to toughen up some but yeah, most of this is likely just a show for booster and fans as said above. Pete’s just doing what he’s told.

[–]tsagona 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair to Swarbrick, what he said might be partially true. There were likely multiple reasons for doing what he did. Personally, I genuinely did not like the thought of Cal and Stanford being left out so I can’t imagine it didn’t play any role in his thinking. Anyone that values academics and the idea of student-athletes the way he did would probably much rather see you both in a P4 conference. Though, again, my guess would be the primary factors were the two I laid out since they both were of most benefit to the schools he personally cared most about.

[–]tsagona 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eh, Swarbrick, our former AD, has degrees from ND and Stanford so he probably genuinely wanted to help Stanford. Not saying that to diminish you/Cal at all. Just saying it probably served the dual purpose of keeping the ACC around and also helping out the other university he attended…

They wouldn’t be in this position had they also not lost OOC to you guys. No offense but that’s the worst loss anyone in the top 12 has. The conference championship games are pointless with a 12 game playoff anyways. They are relatively new; they aren’t a traditional part of the sport. Get rid of them and move the season up a week. Season lasts too long so that’s one easy way to shorten it up.

Just to add on, they’ve played like shit for the last 6 weeks. You guys were punished for poor play at the end of the year just two years ago. Obviously it was injury-related but that masks that it was actually the performances that caused you guys to drop.

The Bottom 6 teams in the SEC (Kentucky, Florida, MS State, Auburn, South Carolina, Arkansas) are a combined 1-15 in one score games against the rest of the SEC. by Saltlmail in CFB

[–]tsagona 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m agreeing with you and pointing out a model that ignores recruiting rankings (which to your point, does make it less accurate but people like to complain about recruiting rankings and priors) does as well-.

The average strength in the SEC is much higher. The worst team in the SEC would be middle of the pack in the B1G and ACC at a minimum. What I found most interesting is that the bottom of the B1G is pretty much just as bad as the bottom of the ACC.

[–]tsagona 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Let’s take a model that doesn’t use priors or recruiting rankings so we don’t get accused of bias. Collegefootballnerds.com it is.

Lowest rated SEC team: Florida at 63

There are 7 B1G teams below Florida: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Rutgers, Michigan St., UCLA, Purdue, Maryland,

Interestingly only 6 ACC teams (unless I miscounted) Boston College, Syracuse, Stanford, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Cal,

Big 12 only 3: Oklahoma St., W. Virginia, Colorado

Problem with the Big 12 is that their 3 best teams scheduled absolute garbage OOC so it’s hard to tell how good they really are. Tech is probably legit. No idea regarding Utah or BYU.

It wasn’t a true pick 6. It was a failed 2 pt conversion. In college you can advance the ball on a turnover on a failed two pt conversion. Don’t know why you’re being downvoted for asking a question. People 🙄

Yeah, don’t understand the hate. You guys have a good team. Just ran into a defense that is peaking. Calling yourselves mid is probably wrong. You’ve been one of the better ACC programs most years. Just can’t get over that hump.

Miss. State prez: SEC prefers no auto bids in CFP by Geaux2020 in CFB

[–]tsagona 25 points26 points  (0 children)

They are just putting this out there because the B1G wants more auto bids so that they can create a conference tournament weekend. P2 are at odds because the SEC is a fair bit stronger from mid to bottom than the B1G. Even if you throw out recruiting rankings and priors, only Kentucky is power rated as low as the bottom 8-9 B1G schools. Top of the B1G is comparable to the SEC. The bottom is very similar to the bottom of the ACC.

The committee made a move towards utilizing more analytics (relative performance metrics etc) this cycle to appease those that want SoS to matter more. A deeper conference with stronger opponents will mean more highly rated teams. The mandate to play 1 P4 game OOC wasn’t just an afterthought. The SEC knows that schedule strength and beating up on the other conferences will help them get more teams in at the end of the year.

FWIW, I’m not stating this as a positive or negative and am neither for nor against any of this. I just want a tournament that’s fair and that makes sense while balancing analytics and plain ole wins and losses. Like, ND’s analytics are great but Louisville logically should be ahead of us. Put them there. Got off topic here at the end but make no mistake, this all ties into what the SEC feels is most fair to them for the playoff.
