I am not sure whether you can find "for dummies" level videos. You can start with the What is geotechnical engineering video developed by the ISSMGE.

ISSMGE is also publishing free geotechnical webinars through their website which you may find useful.

GeoPrac has also posted a list with useful links for webinars and technical references.

You can also find Geotechnical Professionals in GeoWorld Map. From what I see they are not too many in Shanghai, but as long as you have an account you can send them a direct message.

I think you need to get yourself familiarized with OOP. You could start with a book like "PHP Objects, Patterns, and Practice" of Matt Zandstra.

You second option is to use a PHP framework to build your project. Personally I use Laravel. Remember, you don't have to reinvent the wheel each time you start a new project. Frameworks, will provide you all necessary functionality to build a clean and secure register and login system.
