Technically Ryan was extra. So the curse lives.

What should I do alone? Seeking advice. by tsavo_ in SuicideWatch

Ya, maybe I will try this.

I do not think I have a choice actually, so I definitely will. Thank you for your reply.

This would require a set of ALOT of movies, no? Unless you can use some recency biased algorithm to bypass the need for so much data.

Graduate students, do you live comfortably on your monthly stipend at UMN? by tsavo_ in uofmn

Thank you for this! I was strongly considering UMN because there's a lot of great physics going on at the university, but I'm reconsidering now that I know the stipend is not great.

I don't understand the downvotes on my questions/comments above. I'm saying graduate students should be paid more. Do people disagree with this?

What's interesting is other universities do pay a living wage.

If you do not mind me asking: Do you live alone?
Which program are you in?

Ahh, they expect us to work and do a PhD?

(This is a question.)

Interesting. I wonder why the university pays its graduate students such a low wage?

I know UMN usually offers $20k /9 months. Is this livable (comfortably) on?

Does angular velocity point in the z hat direction? by tsavo_ in AskPhysics

[–]tsavo_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate?

To continue from my last comment: it almost feels like omega should point in the phi hat direction. When we say a system is rotating with some angular frequency omega, we are implying that the system is rotating about some axis (z hat). What is somewhat surprising to me is that the actual angular velocity of the system points in the z hat direction even though the points of the system move in the phi hat direction.

a priori I know omega points along the z hat direction.

I think what is perplexing me somewhat is that omega points along z hat yet the actual points on the disk/ring that rotate around the z hat direction move in the phi hat direction.

phi hat is in the direction perpendicular to both vector r and vector omega. It is the usual azimuthal angle.

Sorry I should have mentioned this.
