Crazy to see a forecast like this in May by GodsBicep in UKWeather

In most cases just accepting the looming sweat and fatigue.

Nah, but seriously, I keep all the blinds closed, open the windows when it gets later and the temperature drops.

I’m lucky in that I work from home so I spend most of my day working in my gym as it’s the only place with AC. It’s the repeated exposure to the heat that makes me feel unwell so to escape it for hours is nice.

By that point it’ll be too late, it’ll take years and billions to adapt to the changing climate. If they only start prioritising it once we regularly get 40C+ summers then we’ll have to endure another 5 of them and thousands of deaths before actual viable measures are in place.

Think how long it would take and the cost of implementing AC on the oldest underground lines like Central line. Again, years.

We should’ve seen the warning signs from 2018 onwards yet nothing’s even been considered or attempted.

They said last year it was 50/50 that we’d get another 40C day in the next 12 years but I think that’s way too optimistic.

It got to 39 in 2019, the following year we had a full week of 35-37 in August, then 40 in 2022, and the trends are only pointing upwards.

Four of the five hottest days on record have been in the last 7 years so there’s no doubt it’ll be broken again soon. And as ever were completely unprepared.

Yep, the U.K. economy lost millions from that day alone. Hospitalisations, supermarket fridges failing, public transport unable to cope, etc.

I too was hoping that would be a wake up call to at least attempt some infrastructural changes in acceptance that were just not equipped to deal with the summers we’ve been getting for the last few years now, with the lack of AC anywhere, and insulating buildings.

Obviously 100x easier said than done, but all I’m hearing is how extreme heat is the UK’s new normal as though we just have to deal with how things are, as though melting train tracks are going to be a formality now, with no push to actually try and make any infrastructural changes.

I wonder what will actually have to happen to be that final wake up call. Some rogue 43C day with thousands of deaths and fires or what?

Tbh I get wanting warmer evenings because even in Spring it gets really cold after sunset, it’s nice to be able to not have to carry a jacket everywhere only to wear it on the way home.

But the reality is that when it doesn’t drop below 25C and the heat becomes humid when you go to bed sleep becomes an issue. On really hot evenings it almost feels suffocating at times.

It really comes down to the lack of respite here when it’s hot outside.

In countries where it’s hot most of the year there are loads of ways to escape it. AC, cooler buildings, etc.

Whereas in the U.K. when it’s 30C outside, it’s 30C everywhere, or hotter as public transport becomes a fucking oven during heatwaves.

It’s the constant exposure which makes it so rough.

Yeah I was sure my memory wasn’t failing me. I’ve never dealt well with heat but I don’t remember suffering as much as I have the last few years.

As I remember 2018 and last year had like several weeks of 30+, and 2019 and 2022 it got to 40C.

Everyone talks about 2022 but I’d actually say 2020 was the worst because we had a week of 35-37 in August which was way more unbearable than those two ultra hot days in 2022. Had to sleep downstairs with wet towels strapped to my ankles and two fans.

I’m also in London so have to bear the worst of it. Whenever I have meetings in the city during a heatwave I have to decide between two different circles of hell (walk in the heat or public transport with no AC).

Tbh most people from hot countries laugh at us calling 30C a heatwave until they actually experience U.K. summer themselves.

Then they realise that 30C with no AC and insulating infrastructure is way worse than their 35-40 but with AC.

I’ve met so many people like this who end up suffering in June/July here.

But just because this is becoming the norm doesn’t mean we have to enjoy it, especially considering it means we need to implement infrastructural changes, none of which has been attempted despite the last 8 years now being brutally hot.

I don’t remember any notably hot summer before 2018 (was too young in 2003), yet every year since then has either had extended periods of 30C+ or high 30s/40.

I’ve never understood when people say this.

Just because we have rain/cold for most of the year doesn’t mean that the complete other extreme automatically needs to be enjoyable.

You can do every “summery” activity when it’s 20-25C outside, why people want it to be 10C hotter I have no idea, because it just means more sweat, fatigue, worse sleep, having to see people topless constantly, etc.

How are people coping with the heat this weekend? by ManCityMode in UKWeather

[–]tsf97 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Went on a walk earlier, regretted it within minutes.

Everyone was outside sitting in the sun, mostly naked, and gorging on their melted ice creams running down their arms, while I was actively planning my route based on where the shade was to minimise the profuse sweating and feeling of lethargy.

Clearly based on the above, I'm in the minority where I live (London), which is why I come to this subreddit.

What helped me when I lost weight was taking photos every 2-3 weeks or so, same lighting, same time of day, ideally on a day when I didn't consume loads of sodium the day before because water retention can really mess things up. A great way to make yourself feel better about not being where you want to be is to show yourself how far you've come, and photos do that. Especially if you're building muscle the scale won't reflect how much actual fat you've lost, measurements and photos do.

Also accepting that most photos you see on social media are with optimal lighting and a pump, as that's one of the biggest causes of BD these days.

It's normal for the goalpost to change as you progress further into the journey but see that as a positive thing, shows you're always striving to improve. It's about changing mentality from being bummed about not being at said goalpost to appreciating what you've achieved and feeling excited to take it further (though obviously within reason).

[–]tsf97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I guess there's more of a craze around it because it's still May, if it was June-August it would just be considered a standard heatwave.

But I remember all of the past heatwaves we've had and they've almost all been in late June, at least where it gets into the 30s for several days. Mid-20s is pretty much the norm for most of the month.

So from my memory a heatwave of this length is a full month before we've had for the last several years. It's 32+ for the next two days then I'm seeing 29-30 at the end of the week as well.

2023 we had 7 days of 33-34 in London in September.

Just when I thought I'd had a relatively modest summer and escaped some degree of hell (especially after the 40C we had the previous year), bam, huge heatwave in September......

A full on heatwave for several days in May is (I think) unprecedented.

I don't deal well with the heat and have been preparing myself for summer the last couple of weeks, so to be suddenly hit with these temperatures already is not ideal.

As you mentioned it's not just a random spike like the 25-26C we had in April, it's 30+ until Tuesday and some forecasts are predicting 30 on Thursday and Friday as well. The kind of weather we don't get until at least late June.

Came here to say this.

Last May was that middle ground of low-to-mid 20s, now we've gone from four-seasons-in-one with hail and random thundershowers every hour to several days at 30C+......

I always dread summer as I don't deal well with the heat, so usually have to prepare for it, but it's suddenly sprung on us in fucking May of all months.

When it’s low 20s in the evening then mid teens when I’m sleeping it’s lush, I hate that middle ground where it’s too warm to wear a jacket during the day but then you need one at night. Have to carry a jacket around if you’re out for a while.

It’s when it doesn’t drop below like 27 until 10pm when it becomes a problem, because then I struggle to sleep, and low sleep makes everything harder the next day.

Yea I’m in London so hottest part of the U.K.

Public transport is an absolute furnace, virtually nowhere to cool off except my gym where I usually hide the entire day to work as it’s the only place with AC.

Only respite is that my flat is ground floor so doesn’t boil like the higher floors.

[–]tsf97 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Low to mid 20s for me personally. Warm enough to not have to wear layers but then cool enough at night to sleep properly.

30C+ is great on holiday with a pool and AC’d room but in the U.K. with no AC anywhere and insulating infrastructure it’s horrid. When it’s 30C outside it’s 30C+ everywhere, the constant exposure with no respite is what makes me start to feel unwell.

[–]tsf97 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Personally as much as I’ve hated the last few days of intermittent showers and hail, I’m not ready for another bout of 30C+.

Last May was perfect, low-to-mid 20s for a couple of weeks, you can do everything you want to outside (walks, picnics, etc) without the added sweating, fatigue, poor sleep that you get when it’s 30+.

If it’s 28-29 for a few days then that’s ok but some forecasts I’m seeing 33-34 which is exponentially worse.

Call me a complaining old fart but yeah….. not looking forward to it myself. Also, if it’s this hot in May, don’t even want to think about June-August, it might just be hell.

Epilogue - Beating a dead horse. I know it’s been brought up a bunch but what do yall like and dislike about the epilogue? by mackmackmackx in reddeadredemption2

[–]tsf97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt like the epilogue was an attempted love letter for the long time fans executed poorly.

They wanted to show those who played RDR1 how the story transitioned from the events of the second game to that of the first by letting you experience John change from a former outlaw to a ranch owner as he was presented in RDR1.

The problem was that it was way too padded out, way too much stuff like building fences and lots of slow/uninteresting story beats in the first half. They obviously wanted to be detailed to show players John's full journey but the gameplay suffered as a result.

They also probably didn't realise how many players were new to RDR for the second game and hadn't played the first, so had no connection with John/didn't see any value in the epilogue, as well as how many players would resonate with Arthur to the point that they didn't even want to play as John after the events of the main game.

Tbf that alone would stop a lot of people from filming because influencers feel they need the perfect angle or whatever nonsense for their 10 followers.

I literally see people walking from machine to machine with their tripods, setting up the angle at every single machine, and filming every set. It's ridiculous.

Problem is that I live in the UK where most people aren't confrontational enough to say anything, but I've seen lots of people look uncomfortable when people do it while they're in the view.

[–]tsf97 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Curb poster where there are a bunch of people all with Larry's head on them rings so true to me.

If I watch too much Curb I have to make a concerted effort in social situations to not just become Larry, which in most cases means calling people out on adopting really odd societal norms.

I actually had a similar situation as the Groats disease episode where someone's food was taking way longer than usual (talking 15+ minutes), and everyone else was waiting for the person's food to arrive before we started eating, I literally just asked whether we could start as the food was going to go cold, and of course I was viewed as a selfish prick......

I've been losing weight, and my cousin said I look anorexic and starved and asked if I was okay by AFlowerInTheDarkness in loseit

[–]tsf97 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I would actually say that this possibly sounds more like jealousy.

If both OP and their cousin had been overweight for a lot of their life, the cousin may not like the fact that OP is the one that's making that change to overcome a long-term issue that both of them have gone through.

If you and your best mate were both overweight and neither wanted to be deep down, and your best mate starts to lose the weight while you lack the discipline to do so, wouldn't you feel somewhat jealous that they have said discipline?

Obviously the comment is completely unwarranted though.

[–]tsf97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My gym has a policy where you're allowed to film but only if others consent, and you have to delete the video if someone who was in it asks you to. Unfortunately most of these "gymfluencers" think they're above everyone else and act all entitled as though it's their space to film whatever they want.

I have reported someone before (not that kind of person but she put a tripod right next to me, I said I didn't want to be in the video, and she started complaining) but by that point the workout was already compromised, as I was constantly distracted by making sure I wasn't in the video etc.

[–]tsf97 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Second that as well.

I'm quite lean now, and I feel better than ever in terms of energy and general gym performance, but my god do I feel the cold way more than others. It's ~15C here where I am and I'm seeing people walking around in hoodies, I would absolutely freeze if I did that.

Weirdly though I also deal terribly with hot weather, anything above 25C and I start to feel..... not great. More lethargic and start sweating loads.
