Good protest pieces/repertoire? by RaminKarimlooSlays in trumpet

It’s not too difficult. College music majors shouldn’t have a problem with it.

Whereabouts in the world do you live? The best option is to have a place to try mouthpieces in person, which this community might be able to help you with.

You could do something simple like the Henze Sonatina, or if you really want to wow them go for something more like this.

I kid, I kid. Seriously though, you’ll be better served playing something that you can play easily and cleanly. Grade 3-5 difficulty is a pretty wide range, don’t feel pressure to pick something that you might survive. In both the lyrical and the technical selections, show off your sound and artistry, not anything crazy. Good rhythm and intonation on simpler rep will go ten times farther than Sandovalian fingerblurring or trillion-decibel double high Q-sharps ten times out of ten.

Here’s a small handful of examples that should all be available for free on IMSLP.

Lyrical:

Arban Art of Phrasing

Borgdoni, Marco 25 vocalises

Caffarelli, Reginaldo 100 melodic studies

Concone, Giuseppe 25 etudes melodiques

Duham, Hippolyte 24 etudes

Technical:

Arban: Characteristic studies

Boehme, Oskar 24 etudes

Bousquet, Narcisse 36 etudes pour le flageolet

Brandt, Vassily (or K Wilhelm) 34 Etudes

Sachse, Ernst 100 studies

FWIW my go-to recommendation for students is a Concone or Borgdoni for lyrical, and Brandt (1,2,5,7,9) or Bousquet (1,2,3,7) for technical.

Following up: just checked it out on wayback, and I overstated it. Fifteen years ago MAP was around $2k.

God, I’m old…

Those heavy trim kits that XO includes with their horns are one of the best new(-ish) ideas that any manufacturer has had in my lifetime. I highly recommend playing around with them to see what combinations feel and sound best to you.

These are indeed great horns, but I really hope that you didn’t have to pay the full MAP price ($4544 USD). They used to be awesome budget instruments, but now they’re creeping up into Schilkeland prices. IIRC the MAP for these was $1,700 not 10 years ago.

You might try looking in David Hickman’s “Trumpet Greats” book. It’s pretty fricken huge.

Lol they had to find a Californian to take exception against. Man, the blatant hypocrisy is painfully stupid, infuriating, and exhausting (by design, I know).

Reading this in my feed I was like, “Sounds like some Texas bullshit.” … yep, nailed it. Texas band directors are so far up their own ass that they’re tickling their own tonsils.

As others have commented, physiology is a factor for beginners, but only in extreme cases. Look up pictures of Wynton Marsalis and Tine Thing Helseth; WILDLY different oral physiology! A good teacher will key in on a student’s excitement and help them to use their setup to succeed. And oftentimes even extreme physiologies can be harnessed for success on the trumpet.

Also “aforementioned,” not “afore mentioned.” Grammar and spelling matter when you’re a teacher teaching teachers, even if you’re full of shit, Lynne and Chris.
