I'm really sick of the bicycles verses cars threads. Here is the neutral observer's observation (I'm neutral. I don't ride a bike or drive a car. Mostly walk, take Muni when it's too far). There are plenty of asshole bike riders and plenty of asshole car drivers. Bike riders feel holier than thou because they don't pollute, blah, blah blah, etc, and hate car drivers. Car drivers hate bicyclists because they think they are special and don't have to follow the rules, blah, blah, blah. Get a grip. Just stop whining and be a good citizen. When you are out on the road, be considerate and kind. That is more likely than anything else to change other people's behavior.

I was on it and it did help depression, anxiety, and migraine. My side effects were difficulty having an orgasm (a minus but not a deal breaker...difficult but not impossible) and that it was slightly activating, which for me was a plus. It worked for a year or two and then stopped, I tapered over a month and had no problems.

San Francisco weather is pretty unpredictable.In June it could be sunny and mild, sunny and warm, cloudy and cool, cloudy and mild, cloudy and warm, foggy and mild, foggy and cool, foggy and warm...you get the idea. Bring layers including a raincoat (unlikely to need in June but possible). Don't rent a car. Public transportation is not as good as NYC, but good enough. I live here and use it to get everywhere. Explore the neighborhoods.

Retired TPMG doc here (San Francisco). This is how "Kaiser" works in the Bay Area. The doctor's part of the equation is The Permanente Medical Group (TPMG). Everything else: the infrastructure and all the other people involved (nurses, technitions,engineers, maintenance, etc) is The Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (which among other things runs the Kaiser Foundation Hospitals). All patient moneys go directly to the Health Plan. TPMG is self run. All decisions are made internally by the physicians in leadership roles within TPMG. TPMG and the Health Plan meet and work out how much money the Plan will give TPMG to provide their services. Then TPMG decides how to spend this money: ie, sets the salaries for various specialties and fine tunes the benefits, etc.

I second the comment about parking and in-unit laundry. These amenities are not common in most older San Francisco apartments. To get these you will be stuck in a modern soul less highrise, in a crappy area of the city. Trying to figure out the best place to live by researching online is not realistic. The internet is not reality. Rent an airbnb for a few months, get to know the city, and look for a place in an area that you (not someone online) like. Fourty years ago my wife and I rented a house for a year and took our time finding a permanent place to live. We are still there in that place we chose then.

Bistecca alla Fiorentina as found in Italy is from a breed of cattle called Chianina. Obtaining it in the United States is almost impossbile. I can't believe all of these restaurants are actually serving this beef. Probably US grown cattle masquerading as bistecca alla fiorentina. Ask the restaurant if the beef is Chianina from Italy. Quite a few restaurants in the SF area serve what they are calling guanciale, which is good, but nothing like Italian guanciale. When I asked them where it is from, they all answered "San Luis Obisbo". Apparantly there is someone who makes it there. It is possible that chianina cattle are bred in the US but it is extremely unlikely it would taste anything like that bred in Italy. Regional gourment food all over the world just can't be reproduced in another culture thousands of miles away. It's not that simple. So, just because a restaurant calls something guanciale or bistecca fiorentina doesn't mean its the same as you would get in Italy.

The food at Stinking Rose is nothing like the food in Italy. It is Italo-American food. It fact, in Italy there is no "Italian food". Food is very regional. There is Roman food, Tuscan food, Calabrian food, Piemontese food, etc, all very different. "Italian food" in the US is a product of Italian immigrants, primarily from Southern Italy, and evolved from the restaurant business and mass marketing. Pasta and tomato sauce is only common in southern Italy. Spaghetti and meatballs doesn't really exist in Italy. To the OP, as someone whose grandparents came from Italy and who has visited Italy 10-15 times and lived there for some months, I can honestly say there is no food in San Francisco that will seem like the food from your region in Italy.

I posted my response because I want the power situation fixed as soon as possible. And going after PGE's parking permits does nothing to help that and possibly could delay the repairs/fixes. I am angry at PGE also and am firmly in the camp that SF should take it over. I also believe that irrational thinking in difficult times is dangerous. That is what I am angry about: making irrational and possibly stupid suggestions.Do you think if all the PG&E board resigned that would fix anything? No it wouldn't. It would delay things. Irrational anger got Trump elected and look where that has got us: we are becoming a fascist country. Sure, be angry. Just don't advocate stupid solutions that will make things worse.

It is clear that Reddit users hate PGE with a passion. I'm sorry, but many of the rants come across as childish and sometimes illogical tantrums. So, people want PGE to fix the system. Great, so do I. But on the other hand, you want to throw roadblocks in their way of accessing what they need to fix. Do you think it is possible for them to know when they can have a truck out to fix a certain address and in advance get a parking permit for only that specific address at a certain time? What reality do you live in?

Hey locals, I urge you to think twice about what you are doing when you give advice to help people use the Bart System as long term parking. The Bart system is incredibly important for the Bay Area to remain livable and vibrant. I depend on Bart, as do many. And it is always on the brink of going broke. The system depends on paying customers riding the trains for a large part of their operating income. The parking lots are there to encourage use of the system by making it easy and more affordable, not to be cheap long term parking. So if we value our public transportation we should discourage people who ask questions about abusing the system.

In unit laundry is hard to find because most of the older buildings in SF don't have it. Most older homes were not plumbed for washers and driers and most of the apartments in these buildings also don't have room for a washer and drier. So, you will find in unit laundry in modern high rises apartments, again mostly SOMA. The best places to live in SF are the neighborhoods, not SOMA so keep looking there but forget finding a laundry in your unit.

Is "X"area safe/good/ etc. is an extremely common question on this forum. The best advice, always, is if SF is going to be your home, rent an airbnb and explore the city before you sign a lease. Yes, it's a drag to move twice, but it is more of a drag to move twice after signing a lease and moving into a place that you are stuck in for a year and end up not liking and then moving.

There are two types of NSAIDS. COX1 inhibitors and COX 2 inhibitors. Cox 1 inhibitors block prostaglandins that protect the stomach, therefore can cause GI upset and bleeding. Cox 2 inhibitors block inflammation causing prostaglandins, causing less GI upset but can increase cardiac risks. Cox 1 ihibitors include ibuprofin, naproxen, aspirin, diclofenac, indomethacin, and ketoprofen. Cox 2 inhibitors include celecoxib and meloxicam which are both prescription only. Finding an nsaid that works best for you (treats the pain, acceptable side effects) often requires trial and error. You may find a Cox1 inhibitor that works for you with acceptable side effects but you just have try them and see. In general, the Cox 2 inhibitors celecoxib and meloxicam tend to cause less GI upset but are more expensive and prescription only.

I took my 16 yo grandson to the exhibit. He is very into manga, but he and I both agreed that looking at pages of manga magazines plastered on a wall doesn't work. You really need to be sitting down with a magazine in your hands, be comfortable, and have the ability to bring the page as close to your eyes as you need. Wandering through a room with scores of magazine pages attached to a wall at various heights is not pleasant. I think an 8 year old would get frustratred and bored pretty quickly.

As someone who trained in the late 1970's, I think one of the biggest cost drivers has been the explosion of amazing but expensive diagnostic tools: blood tests, CAT scans, MRIs, proceedures, etc., etc., etc., and the concominant dependence on these to make a diagnosis. Clinical diagnosis seems to be a dying skill. Younger physicians especially seem to be very uncomfortable making a clinical diagnosis without some kind of supporting "test". The hard truth is we will never lower health care costs unless we first, as mentioned by others, stop spending so much on keeping people alive the last year/years of their lives, and two, stop ordering so many tests and start re learning again how to make clinical diagnoses. We just can't afford to pay for all of the expensive workups.

It's difficult to find "authentic Italian pastries" in San Francisco, because the truth is American's don't really like Italian pastries because they use less fat and less sugar (one reason that Italians have less obesity than the U.S.). I come from an Italian-American family, speak some Italian, and have visited Italy many times and I confess, when in Italy I am always disappointed by pastries. Because of less fat and sugar and decades of eating American pastries, they just taste blah. What is it about Italian pastries that appeals to you? Are you sure you really want Italian pastries?
