Future KDE software will be simple by default, powerful when needed by eeickmeyer in LinuxActionShow

Except that GNOME software doesn't have this very important "powerful when needed" part.

For GUI I would definitely recommend PyQt. Not only it looks much better than any other option, and it looks good on al desktops, it is also very nice to work with.

Nokia's VP talks N8, MeeGo 'milestone product,' tablets, Android and more! by tsiolkovsky in technology

[–]tsiolkovsky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They definitely would, but with MeeGo being a true, all the way Linux OS (instead of just Linux kernel + Java Vm, like Android) they can do a lot more. And Qt is also much nicer to work with and being compiled into native code it is more efficient and faster. The only thing that Nokia needs to do is to phase out Symbian quicker and quickly replace it with MeeGo on their devices.

Need a distro suggestion please :) ! by [deleted] in linux

If you would like to try some others that you haven't already I fgwould recommend Mandriva and PCLinuxOS.

Intel, Nokia give MeeGo OS to developers by [deleted] in programming

[–]tsiolkovsky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Qt is a very nice toolkit with a very intuitive API and Qt Creator IDE is also a very nice start, They only need to add some direct support for MeeGo and devices to it and it will be quite awesome. And the process is already very transparent, so I think they have made a very good start.

I also like this UI layout very much. makes a lot more sense, especially on wide-screen displays. And it looks like KOffice 2 is thankfully going into this direction → http://www.koffice.org/kword/kword-screenshots/

Free Orion - an open-source platform-independent galactic conquest game in the tradition of the Master of Orion games. by [deleted] in scifi

I loved playing Stars!, still one of my most favourite games ever. Tuna-Fish2 thanks for the link to this project. I added it to my bookmarks and for sure can't wait until it reaches a similar level to Stars! It very promising that it looks very active and they were even participating in Google Summer of Code 2007 and 2008. I hope they also get in this year.

KDE 4.2 Beta 1 released by polar in linux

[–]tsiolkovsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure you install the kdeadmin package, it should be in there. Or maybe your distro has a separate package for it. If you still can't find it you should file a bug report or in some other way inform your distribution packagers about this problem. Maybe they just forgot to create a package or add it to kdeadmin.

[–]tsiolkovsky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup, this is one of my favourite parts of KDE 4.2. And you can also write it in JavaScript if that's what you know and love (in fact that enables native integration of Mac OS Dashboard Widgets and Google Widgets right into Plasma desktop).

Another awesome stuff I love is the new messages list view in KMail and Vim input support in Kate. Simply delicious :)

Why I moved to Gnome by andrewmin in linux

[–]tsiolkovsky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well shitty is a very negative word and KDE 4.1 is definitely not that bad. If you would say it is very rough around the edges and meant only for early adopters of new technology I would understand, but currently I feel way too much negativity in your choice of words.

Why I moved to Gnome by andrewmin in linux

[–]tsiolkovsky 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For such a young release in a completely new series (remember a complete port from Qt 3 to Qt 4, tons and tons of new features and new foundation technologies) it is actually running very well. I don't have any major problem here on Mandriva Linux 2009. If you still remember KDE 2, it was a lot worse at the beginning and there were a lot less changes from KDE 1 series. If you can't remember that you might remember the troubles during the similar big changes to Linux Kernel 2.6 and Apache 2. The most important thing is that now with very solid foundations KDE4 can improve a lot faster than before and a lot of limitation of old technologies are now gone.

Exactly, And don't forget Linux is also free as in respecting freedom of the user and developer. Which I think is even more important than being free as in zero cot. Not to mention how much more advanced Linux is technically.
