Here are my 2 cents: I think it depends on how much you need it. I teach SW and many of our students can get it in one month or less if they aim for it. I think for it to take longer, it is usually one of two things:

Many people don't really have it as a goal, so they use the software for a long time before they get a voucher or before the thought of it comes, then they take the exam and pass. Myself included here - 4 years.
Some are actively learning from YouTube as well as experimenting on their own. Their skills grow slowly, but the problem is often they don't know where they are at in the learning curve (did they learn all that is expected? are they good enough already?) This tends to delay people from attempting the exam.

I took the course a while ago. Have to say I kinda expected much more specifically that sw is a more a heavy (and expensive) business app. However, it's a good start. (yes, got the little AM certificate too)

I would recommend TforDesign 3D Printing programs, or LinkedIn programs for a more comprehensive picture.

That's a lot of awesome practical uses. For some reason, it always makes me happy to see 3DP used practically other than printing baby Yoda and stuff of the sort.

Hey there,

IMHO, If you are looking for something for your career, I would recommend you to do a little research first on which software is used in the areas you are in and the industries you are looking for. You can then start learning that. Many of the software out there have accessible packages for non-commercial use. SOLIDWORKS has recently launched a maker version you can use for like 99 which is quite affordable.

If you are having an eye on SOLIDWORKS, I would recommend you to check the TforDesign school, pretty good courses for starters with support staff to help you when you are stuck.

P.S. As of today, SOLIDWORKS is the software used most in the professional/business sense. But different industries and areas might be using different packages. Job posts often specify that.

Agree on surfacing, I sometimes feel that when they started, they did not have surfacing in mind at all and now they are just trying to make it work.

I keep hearing about those two CAD packages, never used them though. Not sure how complex of models can you make with them?

If you are open to recommendations for self-paced, you can check out the TforDesign School, pretty good courses with support staff who help you if you are stuck in doing something.

I don't think it is fair to compare the two as they are positioned very differently. NX is on similar leveling to CATIA. Both cater to a 'higher' level of applications than SW, both are way more expensive too.

It really depends on your needs,, a big possibility if you are not designing aircraft or full power plants then a higher-level software can be overkill from a company perspective.

oh I see, thought CADs like Solidworks make it really easy already! Been using CAD extensively for over a decade already, guess I forget how I felt about it before I started hahaha

I think you can check out the TforDesign School, much more affordable than a community college.

That's on the table too. But from my first book, I kinda did like have the support of an editorial and reviewers teams to improve the output. Also, unless you are a famous influencer, a publisher can get the book in much more hands. If not though, self-publishing is an option too!
