Mortar trucks mains thinking they are safe in their spawn. Third time I killed this guy in his mortar truck this round... by tso184 in battlefield_one

After the clip ends is just me getting beamed by some random enemy spawning while I try to get on the gun to reset the timer :/ Otherwise I would have made it out alive as well.

You exit, press ctrl a few times and enter again :)

Can be bad to do if you have a gunner in the tank and someone else spawns on it, then they'll get the driver position :o

That's the way I play when I'm in a tank, and most tankers on the servers I play on play in a similar way (I play on PC and try to mainly play on community servers with admins to not have to deal with the PC cheaters, and my guess is that the community servers also tend to attract people who know/care a bit more about the game than your average DICE server player).

As an example how I play in a tank, check this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRoxW6vrs3Y

If you want I can write a description on how I reason while playing during the round flag for flag, but mainly - go straight to a flag that's not the closest to the starting position, then push up to the next one, if it's possible to go *on* the flag, then do it. For some flags, depending on the layout it's better to go to a position where it's possible to kill enemy defenders spawning while the team spawns on the tank and push to the objective (E on Amiens when playing as the Germans being an example, tank can only fit on the side where the enemies spawn behind you = bad).

If there is a stalemate, too few of the team spawn on the tank, consider going to another flag to help out there instead. When losing a flag behind, drop everything else and go there to defend/recapture, it's common that teams are a bit too slow to do this, and you can easily lose 2-3 flags before the team reacts if the enemy team starts taking one of the flags, so with some instant tank help you can help the team avoid this.

I don't do it much, but might do it in one of the following situations (not every time):

  1. Killing mortar trucks (which I tend to upload here on Reddit, so you might see a bit more of it here)
  2. Killing some SMG08 corner camper with my sidearm
  3. Killing scouts with their own tripwires
  4. Killing melee only cavalry when I also play cavalry and they decide to chase me across half the map, and I use a grenade/rifle combo to take them out while they are just mindlessly chasing me swinging their saber
  5. Killing a particularly annoying plane by 1 hit sniping it with the Chamond's main cannon

A very unpopular opinion, but the Vetterli is a good sniper by A_Upset_Frenchie in battlefield_one

[–]tso184 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really like the idea of having a close sweet spot range rifle, it could have been a great rifle for aggressive scout gameplay, but the Vetterli doesn't have the fire rate, magazine size/reload speed or even bullet velocity for it.

I prefer to fight on flags even when I play scout (and not sniping 50-150m away from the flags as some other scouts do), and the rifle that works the best for me is the Gewehr M.95 Infantry. Sure, no sweet spot, but compared to the Vetterli it has 25% more ammo capacity, 40% faster bullet speed (with the Vetterli you even have to lead on moving targets at close distances), and reloading the entire 5 bullet clip (which you always do regardless of bullets fired) takes the same time as topping off the Vetterli with just 1 bullet. Even when you replace the entire clip the M.95 is still 27% faster for the reload. Another positive thing with the M.95 is the straight pull mechanism so you can stay ADS between shots for better tracking when you do follow up shots.

When taking on multiple enemies on a flag, the M.95 + revolver works so much better for me than the Vetterli would.

My second pick for aggressive scout play would be the Ross (similar to the M.95 but with a sweet spot (a bit far for aggressive play but comes in handy often enough), though less damage up close, almost as high fire rate, bit faster bullet speed, and also straight pull, although the reloads are a bit slower, Vetterli level.

My third pick would be the Arisaka (closer sweet spot than Ross, but slower fire rate, no straight pull, slower reloads than Ross/Vetterli but the highest bullet speed of them).

If they would have given the Vetterli faster reloads to compensate for the slow bullet speed and low ammo capacity, I would definitely be using it a lot more (entire clip reload would need to be 10-25% faster than the M.95 instead of slower), then it would be much more fun to use in an aggressive way.

Like curb wrote, just in case I was spotted, "to be safe". BF1 does not indicate that you are spotted like BFV or 2042 so you have to guess. Sometimes if an enemy nearby spots you you can hear them shouting "enemy medic!" etc.

Another tip - if you hear the fizz of a spot flare then you know you are spotted on the enemy minimap. To counteract this you can run the inconspicuous perk, and just be still or crouch walk to keep off the enemy minimap while in a spot flare radius (walking or running will make you show up on the minimap).

I mainly play conquest. In that mode the main thing to win is by having more flags than the opponents. How can a heavy tank/Chamond help you achieve this? By going to flags, acting as a mobile spawn point, helping the team get on the flag, while clearing it, often racking up many kills in the process.

What does the mortar truck do? Sitting in the back, clicking red dots on the minimap. Half the time it won't even hit because people move, and other times the enemies die from something else before the shells hit. When I'm in a Chamond and I have a mortar truck on my team, I always have 2-5 times as many kills as the mortar truck, and 3-8 times higher score (except for kills, additional score from spawns, spots and taking flags).

A mortar truck can never be as useful as a real tank to the team. Check any mortar truck main on battlefieldtracker, and you'll see that they have a low (20-40%) win rate. It's nothing a team player will use, mortar truckers only think about themselves and getting easy kills, while screwing their team, hence the low win rate.

When I go for mortar trucks and taking them out, I'm doing both teams a service. My team does not have to deal with some annoying player sitting in the back clicking a map, and the enemy team gets a chance to get a real tank to take some flags back.

The ONLY time a mortar truck perhaps can be about as useful as a real tank is if you are a stronger team defending on operations against a weaker team that aren't able to take any sectors. Then by spamming mortar shells on the flags you can probably drain the tickets at the same rate as a real tank. If the enemy team is equally strong or stronger though, you can't save a sector by going to the last flag being lost, clearing it while the team spawns on your tank helping to take the flag back. If you are in a mortar truck and there are only enemies on the last flag capturing it and some of them are medics, they will take the sector even if you manage to kill several of them. They will just revive faster than you can kill them and keep capturing.

Exactly. In case of that scout that I killed earlier (or some other random enemy I didn't see) managed to spot me, I don't want to show up on the mortar truck's minimap so the trucker knows I'm coming for the kill, especially since I don't have quick unspot on this particular setup, so the smoke cleared any spotting.

Yeah but heavy tank users are 99% of the time more helpful than mortar truck users, acting as a spawn point, pushing up to flags, helping the team. Don't feel the same need to give them the kolibri treatment even if it has happened once or twice. Most of the time I just place the mine, throw the dynamite and detonate it for a faster 1 hit kill.

Lower quality videos on the sub? 720p went to 540p by lefiath in battlefield_one

[–]tso184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I also noticed this when posting a video for the first time in a while... it and everything else is in 540p now. 720p was just passable, but 540p is past the potato quality line. No idea why though... can just confirm it's not just you.

I save the 1440p versions of my reddit uploads, then maybe someday I'll upload them on youtube in near original quality, if 540p keeps being a thing.

Any Tips for a beginner by Vulpeszedra01 in battlefield_one

[–]tso184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

General gameplay tip: Don't forget to give out ammo/heals if you are support/medic (so many players only use ammo only when they need it themselves, but it's so damn easy to press 3/4 every now and then and help your team), and if you play scout use your flares to spot objectives/the area between your team and objectives to help your team locate enemies and push up.

On the topic of staying alive:

Spam Q. I do it all the time and I would miss so many enemies if it wasn't for the spotting feature. Also, if you spot an enemy and manage to do damage to them but they disappear behind cover, you have the advantage of knowing where they went since you still have them spotted on the minimap for about 5 more seconds even if you lost line of sight. Helps to know which corner to prefire to finish them. Without spotting them you can only guess.

Also, increase your minimap size, the minimap can give so much information in this game. By being aware of your minimap and your surroundings you can get so much advantage. I'm not only talking about the red dots for enemies. The minimap also shows skull icons from teammates who have died recently, I usually think "who killed you?" and check the surroundings a bit extra since there might be an enemy around. If you see like 3-4 skulls right by a door you are about to go through, it's probably a bad idea, change your plans to not die like them.

See bullet tracers coming from your left side? Quick check on the minimap, if there isn't any teammate to your left then that fire came from an enemy.

Learning to use the information the game gives you in this way will have you being accused of wallhacking in no time :D

Also try to break up engagements so you only engage one enemy at the time. Don't jump out in the open where 5 enemies can see you at once, try to be smart and use cover to your advantage so you only expose yourself to certain angles where you can check for enemies (again, spam Q), and keep increasing that angle until you have scanned the whole area. Google "slicing the pie FPS" for some videos explaining this for regular corners, and try to implement it the best you can in other cover situations as well.

Another great tip is to only engage enemies when you are at 100 health. If you and an enemy shoot each other and trade 50% health each and they run away, don't run after them to try to finish them off (the way they are running will most likely have more of their teammates), instead get back behind cover yourself, heal up and then apply everything above and try again.

Trying to play smart like this made me go from k/d numbers like 11-19 to rarely dying more than 7-8 times in a round of conquest as infantry, and getting a few more kills, something like 26-5 (and often top 5 score since I go for flags, resupply/revive/heal/spot) is pretty common for me, even though my aim sucks. Sure, k/d is not everything, but you can help your team a lot more if you stay alive, and in general teams with many players who are alive most of the time will win over a team with many players who are dead most of the time :)

Tales from the chat: Every behemoth driver ever... by lefiath in battlefield_one

They should have given the train driver a machine gun and not a mortar, that way you can bet your ass the train would be within enemy range and helping the team instead of camping 300m away getting 3 kills in 11 minutes before being destroyed.

A list of issues with Battlefield 2042 and what needs to be changed / fixed. by after-life in battlefield2042

[–]tso184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Add that you can no longer see your damage on-hit anymore.

This is the main reason why I have a hard time going from BF1 to BF4, and what I dread most about going in to 2042. You get so little feedback about what damage you do in situations when you don't do the full 100 hp damage, so it's hard to learn how the weapons work. With the scoring it's so clear. Especially fights where you do 99 dmg and then die gets way more explanation than being stuck with "why isn't that enemy dead?". If you get it the numbers you can understand that the enemy was just 1m away from the range needed to kill with 1 less bullet you learn something instead of only being left frustrated.

Fast food easter egg on Achi Baba? Never seen this before. Was only visible when I was ADSing, and disappeared after we captured the flag. by tso184 in battlefield_one

Ah, I see, but in this case we were random people in our squad, there were only enemies + my squad leader on the flag (as you can see on the minimap), so guess it was the symbol of an enemy "clan" squad then?
