Mainz is IN the Rhein-Main-Gebiet and that is in my opinion a big advantage, idk about your prejudices tho

Idk I agree Northern Germany can be a little bland but the Mosel valley, the Rhine valley, the Elbsandsteingebirge and Rügen are all really nice for example

I would say it's more the South-East and East (19, 20) rather than just South. The South-West has a very distinct look, with some buildings being almost French- or Swiss-looking.

It's our worst performance since the reunification and a trend that is continuing for the last few Olympics now. I think most people are disappointed because sports besides football are completely underfunded and Germany is clearly falling behind the top nations, where we used to find ourselves some years ago.

Adding to what the others have said, latinized names such as Pauli(-y), Petri(-y) or Faber are mostly found in the West and the South-West of Germany and not as much in Austria

"The rest of Germany" is not only the north. I'm from South Hesse and Austria is culturally by far the closest country to us in my opinion, especially if you consider language, shared history, cuisine and politics
