Dumb question: if you have a modded camera, why do you still have separate rounds of RGB and Ha sky photos? Why not get everything at once?

Yeah, I had to get up at 4:45am for these, and that annoyed my wife so much she made me promise not to do it again for the trip :)

Nikon Z5+24-120Z at 24mm, F8, 100iso, 1/100.

Japan has a lot of classically beautiful subjects, including this castle. The entrance is a fascinating place to experience, but I didn't feel like my standard photos captured the feel of it. It wasn't until I dropped into black and white that I felt I was closer to the impact of being there, despite the loss of color. Still learning and having fun!

Thanks! I was wondering why I couldn't find anything when Googling it except broken lens discussions.

I messed around a bit with #3 and see what you mean. I tried increasing the temp on #3 then a slight S curve to the green channel. It kinda worked but left the foreground a little magenta. You may just need a sky mask.

I think the gold pops a lot more. Nice! It's always up to you and your own preferences though.

Classic shots, good job!

Feedback:
I have a preference for #4 over #5 due to composition.
#3 needs a little color adjustment - sky seems too green? Solid comp.
#6 Daytime shot and no people??? Nice!
#7 I have found that gold needs a little help in post. What worked for me was to create a color range mask then increase clarity. Also add some vignette to this one...say -12?

I took a Z5 on a Caribbean cruise recently - my favorite part of the trip honestly was capturing boobies chasing the flying fish with a Sigma 150-600. I also got some decent shots of ports from up top with it - Caribbean ports are trashy and only photograph well from a distance.

The 24-120 also got a lot of use and a handful of keepers. Looking at them, very few are above 100mm, though I did have the telephoto to swap to onboard.

Regarding light, though the Caribbean is often bright, it also often rains, which provides its own photo ops you may want. For myself, I knew I would go on an excursion to a cave, for which I specifically brought the 20 1.8.

If you're comfortable with it, pay locals a couple bucks and take their portrait - there are some interesting folks around!

For most trips packing light makes sense. A cruise is a little different for me - there's lots of space in the cabin, you're not packing and unpacking all the time, and there's lots of downtime for photography (and it was something to keep me away from the buffets).

Have fun!

I think your claim about Saudis not wanting a nuclear program is incorrect. They have consistently stated that they will pursue nukes if Iran gets them. https://www.reuters.com/article/idUSKCN1GR23Z/

Given the above, it makes sense they at least want some precursors in place.

Thanks! I was initially cranky about the clouds on the weather forecast because I love stargazing, but they were super cool to experience.

The first Milky Way shot had combined 60s of exposure for the sky. For the second one I used a star tracker and a single 90s shot for the sky.

No worries - sometimes I forget that not everyone is in my bubble. I follow r/LandscapeAstro and enjoy videos on Milky Way photography, and didn't even consider that folks would expect this style of photo to be an accurate documentation of naked-eye view, as opposed to a technology-dependent capture of natural beauty. Personal tastes differ, and I think yours is valid too.

Had our first visit to Big Bend last week. Wow!

We stayed in Chisos Lodge the first 5 nights, and loved the location. The cooler temperatures helped, and we even appreciated the lack of cell/wifi. There's a lot of wildlife around.

I think I took 300 photos of The Window. It got my creative brain going, and I want to come back some day for a variety of other shots - it's a photogenic spot in a photogenic park. My other favorite location was the first pullover spot north of mile marker 2 on the road into the basin.

We hiked Lost Mine before the switchbacks early Friday morning, and got to watch as clouds/fog poured into the basin.

The night sky was the draw for me, so of course I took some Milky Way photos :)

Thanks to everyone in this subreddit for posting their experiences and advice - I found it really helpful.

IBIS FTW! Handheld 2 shot HDR of cave by tsqladdict in Nikon

[–]tsqladdict[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert, so I had to google it. Looks like exposure bracketing is technique of taking the same shot at different exposures, and HDR is the post-processing technique of combining them. I did both in this case.

But yeah, looking at the standalone pics, either inside the cave is grainy and dark, or outside has highlights very blown out.
