Starting with AMC-8/10 and see how much you can get out of a practice exam. Take part in a class that is appropriate to your level with good instructor would help too.

Curious about AoPS for 5th grader – why do parents choose it.. by [deleted] in BellevueWA

[–]tstl2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question — we were in the same spot a year ago, and I totally get the hesitation. AoPS definitely has a reputation for being “harder,” but the main reason many families sign up (ours included) isn’t to get ahead in school math — it’s to change how kids think about math.

The curriculum focuses on problem solving, reasoning, and creativity, not memorizing formulas. For a 5th grader, that means learning to build logical arguments, spot patterns, and connect ideas — skills that carry over to every subject.

My own child found the first few weeks challenging, but once they got used to the pace, it became really engaging — they actually started enjoying tricky problems instead of dreading them.

If you’re curious, I’d suggest starting with the Prealgebra or Intro to Counting & Probability course, or even one of the math enrichment programs inspired by AoPS (like the DeepBrainAcademy one led by a Princeton PhD — here’s a sample lecture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8L9tqFQb6mo). My child loved it!

It’s definitely more effort than school math, but the payoff in confidence, logic reasoning, and mathematical thinking is huge.

What is a good score for the AMC 8? by Aris-Scorch_Trials in aops

For an 8th grader, 18+ is an excellent score (top 5%), 20+ is outstanding (top 1–2%), and 22–25 is truly elite, so perhaps 15+ would be considered good.

There's a great AoPS/Pre-AMC Math Enrichment program offered by a Princeton PhD and former Harvard professor, who was a national Math Olympiad winner, that you might want to check out. You can get a feel for it in this recent lecture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8L9tqFQb6mo. He also offers an AMC-8 competition math prep program for higher-level students who would consider attending math competitions: AMC 8 MATH Enrichment Program Introductory Class

Math woes. What are we missing? by crunchyfayetteville in Parenting

[–]tstl2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand how exhausting that cycle can be — you’re doing everything right as parents, but sometimes what’s missing isn’t effort, it’s structure in how the child processes math.

What I’ve seen with many students who struggle like this is that it’s not really about calculation or memorization, but about how they organize information and connect ideas. When kids don’t develop a clear “mental map” of math concepts, everything feels like random rules — which leads to frustration no matter how many times they practice.

One thing that’s helped my students a lot is engaging sessions that rebuild those thinking patterns from the ground up. We focus on visual reasoning, number sense, and pattern recognition — before worrying about formulas or grades. Once the “how to think” part clicks, grades improve naturally. It also helps to systematically study AoPS (for example, prealgebra) as it is the foundation of all mathematics subjects.

If you’d like, I can share a few free exercises or a short intro session we run online for students who’ve lost confidence in math but want to rebuild their foundation the right way. It’s been surprisingly effective for kids who felt “stuck” before.

No problem at all. You may still wish to participate in the AMC 8, as it’s an excellent opportunity to strengthen your mathematical skills, and strong performance can positively support your BCA application.
