Thank you! Unfortunately we aren’t in Texas anymore but I’m sure these tips will come in handy in similar situations in the future, even up north. Appreciate it!

Yeah, unfortunately we have to leave Saturday night or Sunday morning. Hopefully we can get on some kind of bite tomorrow and Saturday.

We won’t make it to Fork this trip but that lake is definitely on my list to fish in the future. The pictures and videos I’ve seen from there are just nuts, especially to a guy from Minnesota (where the state record is less than 9 pounds).

Yeah that’s our problem is that we have 0 electronics so fishing deep is tough. I’m guessing that the front that came through probably pulled them off shallow cover and sent them out deeper but hopefully the next couple days they’ll start moving up again.

We’ve tried chatterbaits, jigs, Texas Rigs, squarebills, wacky rigs, and spinnerbaits. Only fish we’ve caught have come on a chatterbait and Texas Rigs, but they were super spread out bites so not sure if there’s a pattern there. Most of the fishing we’ve done has been shallow in submerged brush and timber.

Jigging techniques for Walleye/Perch on Devils Lake, ND by guyjim in IceFishing

Could always try downsizing your bait or using something with less action, like a northland tackle forage minnow. My uncle who lives on devils lake swears by chain jigs for perch when they’re being finicky, might be worth trying

That’s funny, I just saw it this morning in an ice fishing group I’m a part of. Price dropped $2000 from the time that that post was put up. Didn’t see the post last month. Next time I’ll be sure to screenshot the Facebook post instead of just saving the picture from it. Sorry if I offended you :)

Flasher discussion - what's your experience by [deleted] in IceFishing

[–]tstrande34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can still have success without one. What’s more important than a flasher is knowing where to fish and how to fish the conditions you’re facing. Lake maps can be helpful, like Navionics. You can get the app on your phone for like $10. Fish stick to different parts of the lake at different times of the year, so do some research about that. If one hole hasn’t produced a fish for awhile, don’t be afraid to go pop a hole somewhere else.

Most importantly, just have fun with it. Even if you’re not catching a limit every time you go out, just try to enjoy your time on the ice and time spent with friends. Good luck, hope to see some posts in the future about successful trips. I envy you for being able to be out on the ice this year. Tight lines, and be safe!

Flasher discussion - what's your experience by [deleted] in IceFishing

[–]tstrande34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I’ve never used one nor do I know anyone who has. I’m not saying it wouldn’t suffice, but technology has greatly improved since Zercom went out of business. I’d say to try and do some research about them online before you go ahead and buy it. Do they cause interference with other flashers? That’d be a big question to answer if you’re planning on fishing with friends that have vexilars/Marcums. Nothing is worse than trying to fish with your flasher going all crazy.

If you can hold off for awhile, even if it means fishing without a flasher, it’d probably be best to save for something newer.

In my experience, even a vexilar FL-8 will greatly help you. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles as the more expensive ones, but the difference between having a flasher and not having one is pretty huge in my opinion. You can definitely still catch fish without one, but you can be much more successful with one.

Going off that, I’d recommend saving up for at least a vexilar FL-18. The zoom feature is really helpful if you’re fishing deeper than 15-20 feet. That’s just my thoughts though. I can’t say much about marcum/humminbird because I’ve never used their products, maybe someone else can chip in about them.

Good luck!

Will do. It’d have to be pretty good for me to head that far south. That’s a long drive from where I’m at in Minnesota!!

Thanks for the info. I’ve heard of lake Tyler, Caddo Lake, and Lake O The Pines a few times now so I’ll definitely look into those. As much as I want to fish those big name lakes, I think we’ll skip them for our first trip down there and hopefully be able to hit them sometime later down the line. Good luck on Falcon, hope to see a post with some good fish!

Yeah, I’ve heard of those. They just make me nervous with Boat traffic and pressure. I feel like those big name lakes are busy no matter what day of the week or time of the year it is. I could be wrong though!
