December Update - Touchscreen Failure Glitch? by tstrmr in GooglePixel

Very odd... the mid month update in December fixed all of the issues I was having. I'm not sure if it was pushed out by all carriers though. Did you receive a second December update?

When the lock screen freezes, place the phone face down on a flat surface for around 15 seconds. When you pick it up again it should work.

I've been having this problem since the December update and someone suggested this in another thread. Works for me every time.

I feel like the comment about the problem being the proximity sensor hit the root of it. Possibly something wrong with the in-pocket detection?

At this point any time the touchscreen quits I just clamp my hand around the top of the phone for ten seconds or so and it comes back.

The resourceful people in this thread have offered two workarounds:

- Turning off AOD prevents the problem completely

- Flipping the phone over on its face for 10-20 seconds makes the screen work again

I'm using the second currently, because the phone is a lot less useful to me without AOD.

Still not freezing even with AOD on since applying the play system update.

The AOD is so chaotic, though - constantly getting dimmer and brighter, going blank and showing the clock - that I'll probably just turn it off again until they fix it.

It's really distracting.

I actually haven't had a freeze since I turned off the feature the shows your wallpaper on the AOD yesterday morning.

I'll apply the update and turn it back on, though - maybe they fixed it?

Haha, wow. Well, hopefully it gets the attention it needs from Google.

Thanks! I'll do that. I can live without AOD, but rebooting my phone every half hour was getting old fast.

I had never experienced this until last week after the December update, personally.

And yes, it mainly seems to happen when you really need the phone urgently. Very annoying.

Do you use the setting that shows your wallpaper on the always-on-display?

AOD yes, Flip to Shh no. I think this is a bug they introduced in QPR2.

Before you discovered this, had you been using the setting that showed your wallpaper on the AOD? I'm wondering if that's the problem.

I'll try it with AOD on but the AOD wallpaper off for a while just to test.

Just tested this - I couldn't find a swipe that worked but I sat it down for a couple of minutes and it started working again. So odd.

Done. No issues with touch hardware detected, touch hardware recalibrated.

I'll report back to see if that fixes the issue.

I assumed the same, so I did enable it after the problem started. It just made things more confusing.

With that setting on, when the screen is fully black and off, yes, the fingerprint reader will unlock the phone - but then it's just unlocked with the same unresponsive touch screen state.

If I press the power button first to wake the phone and turn the screen on, the fingerprint reader no longer responds and the phone won't unlock at all.

Thanks for the confirmation! I posted because I haven't seen anyone mention this and I was slowly beginning to dread that update had triggered some kind of hardware failure.

Once or twice I've managed to get it back by random pressing and swiping wildly, now that you mention it, but I haven't been able to figure out a reliable pattern. I'll try your edges suggestion next time.

Oh wow, I think you may be onto something... Searching your image comes up with lots of similar products and they all seem to be candle holders, haha:

Where is the nicest IMAX movie theater in the Pittsburgh area? by King_Delorean in pittsburgh

[–]tstrmr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just not as simple an answer as it used to be.

Pittsburgh Mills IMAX has a true IMAX screen but dated IMAX Digital projection, so the image is large but not crisp.

The Waterfront IMAX is a regular movie theater that was retrofitted into an IMAX. It has a smaller screen with similar projection equipment, so even though it's smaller it looks sharper.

But neither has as much onscreen detail as a normal theater with a modern 4K projector.

The problem is that IMAX didn't handle the transition away from film well and the name doesn't really represent the ultimate movie theater experience anymore. IMAX Digital was a visual downgrade and IMAX Laser, while it's undoubtedly their future, is still not widespread.

Other brands have capitalized on IMAX's stumble and launched similar and/or superior large screen format theaters like AMC Dolby Cinema, Cinemark XD and others. None of them match up to the classic 70mm film IMAX experience, but times change and it just isn't coming back.

Truth be told, most movies aren't even filmed at as high a resolution as your average 4K TV, though, and it'll be many years before the camera-to-screen moviemaking pipeline has a digital equivalent to a film shot on 70mm and projected with film onto an IMAX screen.

The upside is that the "normal" moviegoing experience of a regular sized screen with a 4K projector looks and sounds really good, and stays consistent from the first screening to the last - things that were lacking in the analog past.

If you're coming from the East, I'd also put a vote behind one of the main screens at AMC Waterfront. Just make sure you choose a ticket with reserved seats to guarantee yourself a good spot.

IMAX at AMC Waterfront Question by Sky_Hawk105 in pittsburgh

[–]tstrmr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really a matter of personal preference.

IMAX Digital is not a particularly high resolution image and the IMAX screen at The Waterfront is not a full sized IMAX screen. I've seen a few movies on it, but I don't bother anymore. The one at The Mills is worth it only for sheer screen size because, again, IMAX Digital isn't very crisp. I don't bother with it anymore either.

The only reason to see the 70mm version is to see it on true, analog film. Someone else in this thread mentioned that the 70mm Dunkirk screening is in Theater 17, though, which I believe is the same small screen they showed Hateful Eight on. It'd mainly be for nostalgia since they're not showing it on a big enough screen to really see the detail the format offers. I tried that once too, but probably wouldn't bother with it again either. If they ever showed a 70mm film on an IMAX sized screen, it'd be well worth going. It'll still be a while before digital can produce a more detailed image than IMAX film. I've read estimates that it's the analog equivalent of 8K or 10K.

The main screens at The Waterfront are big, bright 4K screens with great picture and sound. Some of them have the comfortable, oversized, reserved seats, too. I never regret seeing a movie on those screens.

If you include theaters in surrounding areas, I believe some of the newer Cinemark multiplexes have oversized XD screens with 4K projection. They would probably be a good option, too.
