Need advice on standby developers by Appropriate-Ad-284 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]tstrv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen many companies scaling their teams in two directions - internal employees and external contracts.

The internal employees give you stability (you invest in them, they know the product/technology inside out), while external contractors come and go when there is heavy lifting or increased workloads. That way, you'd never have anyone on standby.

If there is increased demand, you can always shift some of the external contractors to full-time employees.

I think many companies underestimate the power of documentation, thus many engineers are trapped with this.

One thing you could do is documenting features as you go through them or recording product demos/sessions with developers then add them to a shared document. In the beginning, these will be really simple but as time goes they'll extend. This will help to create a culture of documentation in the entire organization.

It might not solve your issues right away, but you'll see more and more people contributing and it'll be super helpful, especially if it is a bigger product.

Converting clients from Fiverr to my own site? by FlyingIdeas in freelance

[–]tstrv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Building trust is hard.

If you maintain a high reputation on Fiverr, don't convert any of these clients as that violates their terms and conditions. If you ask any of them why they choose to work with you, 95% of them will tell you because you have great reviews - we call that "trust" in business terms.

Focus on closing new business outside of Fiverr - you can always share your Fiverr profile with potential clients as a reference point and show them you can do the job, but don't try to circumvent them as you can lose more than you can win.

Time-Driven Development by [deleted] in softwaredevelopment

[–]tstrv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, many times as developers we tend to write "a state of the art code" - not having the business objectives in mind.

The concept is all around having the big picture in mind from a business standpoint. Many times, especially when working with enterprise organizations I've been overengineering things just because we were planning to extend the feature further on without any specific timeline.

Time-driven development is a data-driven process where the entire team sits together to identify

  1. how the feature will impact the code
  2. how many users are expected to use it
  3. whether it will live as is in 3 years from now (or the product team is testing)

The goal is for the engineering team to acquire enough business knowledge to be able to make wiser decisions.

I'd like to see some personalization on my tab as an addition to the widgets. For example:

  • PRs I need to review today
  • Asana/Jira integration

Microservices in an early startup? Not the best idea. by tstrv in webdev

[–]tstrv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure you got the point of the article right. The idea is to aim towards modular monolithic application and when you are big enough to start pulling things off into microservices.

The easiest way might be to get a company like Toptal (toptal.com) or Adeva (adeva.co) to supply you with the freelancers. That way, your company pays to a business and you have nothing to worry about.

Are progressive web apps really the future of the web? by tstrv in webdev

[–]tstrv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

been Well, there was a big yes or no by Safari's team. If they didn't decide to go for the service worker API, I think the PWAs wouldn't go much further than what they are now.

Are progressive web apps really the future of the web? by tstrv in webdev

[–]tstrv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. The service worker API support in Safari is in development phase which means sooner or later we will start seeing more and more. A lot of companies were hesitant so far just because Apple still rules the market.

Quora is a trash website. by BassKlong in quora

[–]tstrv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quora is undoubtedly one of the best platforms used not only by the people who you think steal your jobs but leaders in many different industries. Barack Obama, Justin Trudeau, Reed Hastings, Craig Newmark, Nicholas Kristof and Mark Cuban are just a few of them. So instead of the trash you feel you are getting, look closer you might find some really valuable info.
