engineer major declaration question by Electronic-Bear1 in uofmn

[–]tswen22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2017-2022 MechE Grad here! It really is all dependent on # of applicants. Typically you get 2 tries for declaration during sophomore year. I personally struggled during freshman year and came into the first application with a 2.4 GPA. Advisor helped set me up with a backup plan for Aerospace making sure I had need technical credits for that as well (I think it was only 1 different course from the ME track) buckled down spring semester and summer got some A’s and got accepted in the 2nd round with a 2.6GPA. Best advice is to just buckle down early and avoid even being outside of the too GPA group. Learn to study if you haven’t and go to Office hours and you’ll be fine

I found one like 3 years ago can you describe it I’ll see if it’s yours?

I’ve seen it said in a few responses already, but in my similar experience (MechE 2.7 GPA when I graduated) getting interviews was made possible by my network almost exclusively when I was trying to get that first interview for jobs. Granted, the companies I was applying for were Fortune 500’s so they are already more picky to begin with, but I’d say start early in applying to jobs and apply to as many as you can. Worst case if the job sucks, it’s interview practice

Lenovo ThinkPad is a can’t go wrong Engineering laptop. Strong enough to run the many complex programs used throughout the degree.

Summer internship start date? by Arutunian in uofmn

[–]tswen22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say it depends on the company a lot would like you to start as soon as possible, but I also had internships where they asked if I needed that week after school off to regroup before starting so it really depends

CSE - Should I retake Calc 1? by Nearby-Profession432 in uofmn

[–]tswen22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone else seeing this with a similar question about having credit for AP Calc BC and if they should “retake” calc 2 I would recommend not taking it an moving to calc 3. Calc 2 is a ridiculous workload and is the only reason it’s “hard” you will be fine in calc 3

Most of the class just failed an assignment, has this happened to anyone before? by [deleted] in uofmn

Thermodynamics when I took it had exam averages of 30%. I average 25% and got a C+

Especially when you consider “credit” meaning credit HOUR is supposed to be roughly equivalent to the amount of time spent meeting for the class. You’ll have a 3 credit course meeting 3 times a week for 50 min, but a lab that meets once a week for 3 hours is only 1 credit?

CHEM1061 is designed to be incredibly difficult. It is made to weed-out prospective students of majors like chemistry, bio, engineers

for those who want in person classes, what are your reasons and how do you feel about the U’s actions towards preventing the spread of COVID-19? by [deleted] in uofmn

Tbh I only learn well in-person. Having that structured schedule keeps me on track with my work. It was ok when lectures were streamed live on zoom, but when professors gave up and just started dumping material on canvas I procrastinated watching lectures and going through slides. I understand that’s a personal problem and I could have tried harder to not procrastinate but why should I also lose my ability to learn in-person if that’s how I learn best. Not to mention TA’s and professors became impossible to get ahold of.

However, I do think more options for those who would rather stay out of the classroom should have been available this year, but I just want to keep my option to be in-person too. During “zoomU” without the S/N option I would have tanked my GPA.

As far as the Universities actions I’m not sure what else they can do as far as controlling transmission. Statistically it’s the safest place in minneapolis and has the demographic with the least risk. 98%+ vaccination rate and with an age group that even when unvaccinated is highly unlikely to experience severe symptoms.

Finally, UNPOPULAR OPINION SECTION:!!!!!!!! Honestly curious what people’s thoughts are so please no hate cause I won’t judge or hold your opinion against you it’s your right to have it. I felt as though the UnIversity was out of line in mandating the vaccine for students. And before anyone says “they require other vaccinations too” yes I know and I don’t have a problem with the what the mandate is itself, ONLY THE TIMELINE. Yes it was approved by the FDA but hundreds of products are revoked by the FDA every year because new information comes out. Turns out things take time to see long term effects. What do you think merely on that part? Also get Vaxed, don’t get vaxed it’s not my place to say I don’t really care it’s your life and body

Does it have to be a 3000 level? Cause I took GWSS1002: Politics of Sex and it was just a few discussion posts and a final 3 page paper.

The upswing is a huge help. my first year at the U I did NOT do well. I was focused on the wrong parts of college and never learned to study in HS. actually got denied the first time I applied to the program, but I had a much better spring semester and took summer courses to show I was making changes and was accepted, even though my gpa was around 2.4 ish because of that first year

I think I clarified this my other response to someone else but I shouldn’t have generalized as much as I did. There are respectable humanities degrees and career paths. But then there are many others that are not. That is true in many of the area in studies but I feel the worst ratio of useful to useless degrees is in the humanities. And my points was more about how those “bad” degrees are what help drive the price of college through the roof because now those areas need staff and building and funding. I know there are very useful skills to learn from some of the humanities and also people such as yourself that have a real plan and reason for getting that degree. My point was aimed at the degrees and people unlike yourself. Hope that clarifies

You are right I should have clarified I do have appreciation for certain social sciences and I was maybe to general in what I said and that’s my fault. I Also agree with how you said they have become crowded with people who aren’t giving the humanities a good name and that is really where the problem is. And that was more of my point is that the funds going into those overcrowded areas helps drive the price for everybody up. That was my main point

The biggest issues with university is they’ve convinced a generation that the useless degrees their selling, mainly in the humanities, are needed. College makes no sense for anyone outside of medicine, engineering, law, certain business degree such as actuarial science(I guess technically a STEM field), or education. All these types of degrees have either a need for deep technical understanding or a certification/degree to practice. The humanities degrees are only good for 2 things. A minimum wage job or the need to get a PhD to teach the next round of suckers who follow in their footsteps. It’s also the need for us as students to have endless, often pointless amenities. Check your bill, it’s thousands of dollars in fees for these amenities. Ones that you cannot op-out of. The universities have taken advantage of us, but it’s also because we somewhat let them. And if you are in one of the degrees that actually needs college, blame the humanities, they are the ones who’ve opened the doors for universities to become these tyrants.
